Spiel Games

Germany is credited with developing spiel. Introduced in 1975, it is essentially an on-line revival of the draw game, an overlay game played in conjunction with lotto. Players are given the option , after entering another game, to enter the spiel game for an additional wager. Then, depending on whether the game is on or off-line, the player is assigned a series of numbers by computer, or a pre-printed number on the ticket is activated, making the player eligible for a designated drawing.
First prizes, generally fixed amounts (though some are parimutuel and some jackpot), are awarded for matching all numbers in order. Prizes are also awarded for matching some but not all numbers, though they must be in the order drawn.
Spiel games are offered throughout Canada, by many European lotteries, and by Australia's NSW Lottery Corp. (Lotto Strike). Two spiel games are offered by United States lotteries in Ohio and Virginia. The New Jersey Pick 6 lotto has a spiel type feature in which each player receipt is assigned a number, making the player eligible for an additional draw.
