GTECH’s National Response Centres Receive Internationally-Recognized ISO/IEC 20000 Certification

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (January 24, 2014) -- GTECH has received International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 20000-1:2011 Service Management System (SMS) certification for all three GTECH National Response Centers (NRCs) — Austin, Texas; Providence, Rhode Island; and Atlanta, Georgia. The GTECH Data Center of the Americas (DCA) received this certification in June 2013. The addition of all NRC facilities to this certification fully integrates service management processes, through a Service Management Plan (SMP), that prescribes procedures to be followed within NRC and DCA segments of GTECH’s Client Services (CS).

The increased collaboration between the DCA and NRCs fosters additional opportunities for cross training and professional development for all employees. Hotline personnel interact with business analysts, call center supervisors report to network teams, and all CS operation units remain aligned through consistent, prescribed policies and procedures. The result is maximum customer service delivery through improved efficiencies and comprehensive analytics.

One of the primary goals for GTECH’s Client Services is to enhance collaboration between all CS units,” said GTECH Vice President of Client Services Ian Hyatt. “The recent verification by ISO/IEC auditors confirms that NRC processes are in line with the processes certified in June of 2013 at the DCA. This certification provides respected third party validation that CS is working as a fully integrated customer service organization. We have always excelled in delivering immediate customer service. Now, we are integrating critical performance metrics between CS units to drive future efficiencies and operational excellence.”

ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011 SMS is a service/management standard. It specifies requirements for the service provider to plan, establish, implement, operate, monitor, review, maintain, and improve an SMS. The requirements for certification are detailed in a SMP that addresses the design, transition, delivery, and improvement of services to fulfil agreed service requirements. This certification is acknowledged as the international “gold standard” in Information Technology (IT) services management and is maintained by the International Organization for Standardization and administered by accreditation and certification bodies.

The purpose of the SMP is to provide clear operational direction by specifying processes, plans, roles, and responsibilities as they relate to the delivery of customer service at the DCA and NRCs. With a focus on capacity management, the DCA/NRC plan establishes best practices to manage capacity fluctuations such as big jackpots and new product launches.

Within the standard there are five process domains: Service Delivery, Relationship Management, Resolution, Control, and Release Management. GTECH’s SMP includes 13 different processes incorporating event management and request fulfilment. The certification is valid for three years.

GTECH has also obtained ISO/IEC 14001:2004 certification for its Environmental Management System (EMS) at its Providence NRC. In addition, GTECH’s Coventry manufacturing facility and its Providence headquarters are both ISO/IEC 14001 recertified.

GTECH received separate ISO/IEC 14001:2004 EMS certifications for Lottomatica’s Rome office and GTECH’s printing facility in Lakeland, Florida.

Scientific Games Sign Contract with Maine State Lottery to Provide Lottery Gaming and Instant Ticket Services

NEW YORK, N.Y. (January 23, 2014) -- Scientific Games Corporation (Nasdaq: SGMS) today announced that the Company has signed a new contract to implement and operate a complete lottery gaming system for instant and draw games, including the Sciplay™ interactive platform, as well as to provide instant ticket printing and a Cooperative Services Program (CSP) for the Maine State Lottery, an existing customer.  Under the terms of the contract, Scientific Games is responsible for installing and supporting terminals, terminal communications and point of sales equipment for approximately 1,300 WAVE™ lottery retail terminals, as well as providing instant game design, marketing services, warehouse management, inventory control and retail distribution.

The contract, which was awarded through a competitive procurement process, is scheduled to begin April 27, 2014 and extends through June 30, 2020, and may be extended by the Lottery for additional periods.

Facebook, Twitter..... State Lotteries Discover Social Networks

60% of the lotteries "already" have an official Facebook page

Social networks and media are currently the hot topics in the gambling industry, and in its new Lottery Benchmarking Report MECN therefore takes a closer look at state lotteries and their successes and strategies in the social media world

LONDON / MUNICH (January 28,  2013) -- In the gambling industry social media and networks as well as social gaming/gambling seem to be everywhere. No conference is without social media evangelists, no industry magazine without social gaming specials, ... Therefore it's time for an objective analysis of the relevance of social media/networks and their impact on state lotteries.

Actually, the Facebook pages of state lotteries are already very much old hat. Many lotteries began offering their products on Facebook as far back as 2008. Still, other lotteries are only just beginning to discover social networks as a relevant marketing channel, and several lotteries are still joining.

On the whole, 60% of the state lotteries operate an official Facebook page.

In total, MECN analysed nearly 160 state lotteries and their official Facebook, Twitter, and/or YouTube pages. Some results were impressive, some astonishing:

  • 60% of the lotteries have an official Facebook page – On the whole, 60% of the state lotteries operate an official Facebook (51% in 2012) page whereas 5% of the lotteries have “some kind” of Facebook page that we could not identify as an “official” page. Among those not having Facebook pages are many lotteries in Asia and Latin America as well as many German state lotteries.
  • Nearly 50% of the lotteries have an official Twitter page/channel – When it comes to Twitter, 47% of the lotteries analysed have their own Twitter page/channel (39% in 2013), and 49% operate a YouTube page/channel (36% in 2012). Other networks, such as Google+, Pinterest, Flickr, ... play only a negligible role, and only a small number of lotteries are using those networks.

Benchmarking of state lotteries’ Facebook pages

Benchmarking Facebook pages of state lotteries is a painstaking, time-consuming, and complex undertaking posing many challenges. Among the most critical issues are the following: (1) Identifying the official Facebook page of the lottery; (2) as many Facebook pages of lotteries are restricted to a specific country, only local/resident analysts can access these pages; (3) and as Facebook Likes/fans, ... can change quickly, the analyses have to be repeated fairly frequently.

Nevertheless, we want to present a few selected insights from our newest 2013/2014 Lottery Benchmarking Study:

  • Average number of Likes – The average number of Likes/fans the Facebook pages of state lotteries attract is ca. 53,000 (October 2013) - an increase of ca. 140% compared to the figure of a year ago. The Facebook page of the U.K. National Lottery represents the best practice (same as in our 2012 analysis) and has by far the highest number of Likes/fans with nearly 513,000 in October 2013 (ca. 350,000 in October 2012).
  • On average, 1.0% of a country’s Facebook users are “fans” of the Facebook page(s) of their country’s lottery – To narrow down the analysis even more, we also analysed the number of Likes/fans in relation to the overall number of Facebook users. On average, 1.0% (0.85% a year before) of a country’s Facebook users are “fans” of the Facebook page(s) of their country’s lottery; for most countries, that figure hovers around 0.5% (median). The Internet-savvy Icelanders seem to be especially keen on following their country’s lotteries: their two lotteries are both among the top five.

All or Nothing’ Game Set to Debut in Minnesota and Iowa

Players in New Lotto Game Will Win Top Prize For Matching All—Or Nothing

ST PAUL, Minnesota (January 24, 2014) -- The Minnesota and Iowa lotteries are using a player complaint about lotto drawings as the basis for a new game.

The All Or Nothing™ game debuts Tuesday, January 28, allowing players to win its $100,000 top prize for matching all of the winning numbers in one of its drawings or none of them.

The lotteries announced the new game during an event Friday at a supermarket in Rochester, one of the locations where tickets will be sold.

All Or Nothing is a joint game being offered in both states, with two drawings per day, seven days a week. Players in All Or Nothing will choose 12 numbers from a pool of 24. Twelve winning numbers will be selected in each midday and evening drawing. Tickets will cost $1 per play.     

The game has an hourglass prize structure offering 10 ways to win, with the $100,000 top prize at the two extremes - for matching all or nothing - and smaller prizes working in from there. Players can win the game’s second prize of $1,000 for matching 11 of the winning numbers or just one of them. The $20 prize level is for those who match 10 numbers or two; the $5 level is for those who match nine numbers or three; and players will win $1 for matching eight of the numbers or four. Those who wind up in the middle by matching five, six or seven numbers will not win a prize. The overall odds of winning are 1 in 4.54.

This is a fun concept that definitely tweaks the traditional lottery drawing,” Minnesota State Lottery Executive Director Ed Van Petten said. Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich added, “If you never match anything in lottery drawings, have we got a game for you!

Drawings will be held at 12:45 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. daily. Players will be able to buy tickets for those drawings until 12:10 p.m. or 8:10 p.m. If they purchase a ticket after the cutoff time, it will be for the next drawing.

Kentucky Lottery Proceeds to the Commonwealth on Track

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (January 24, 2014) -- In today’s meeting of the Kentucky Lottery Corporation’s board of directors, it was announced that proceeds paid to the state for the first six months of the fiscal year met their goal – and that performance for the rest of the year is expected to remain on track.

Overall sales for the first six months were $420.4 million, which is $2.8 million more than the previous fiscal year but $7.5 million less than what was budgeted.

A bright spot in sales, according to the lottery’s Sr. Vice President of Sales and Marketing Steve Casebeer, was the new Keno game.

Sales for Keno from launch through the end of December were $6.1 million, compared to the $4.8 million expected,” he reported. “Keno sales are continuing to trend upward. We’ve added 83 new retailers since launch in November to help expand our base, and are working to continue to expand in the social environment.”

Year-to-date income before transfer of dividends to the Commonwealth was $112.7 million, which is $1.8 million higher than budgeted.

We were able to exceed our profit goal despite lower sales thanks to the $636 million Mega Millions jackpot in December,” said the lottery’s Sr. Vice President of Finance and CFO Howard Kline.

Mega Millions is one of our most profitable games, and increased sales of that product – in addition to reducing operating expenses – helped us close the gap.”

In other business, the board approved:

  • A contract with SmartPlay International for random number generators;
  • A contract with Vision Solutions for software, and
  • Rules and regulations for 11 scratch-off tickets.

 

The board also welcomed Jan Buddeke, a retired investment manager, as its newest member. She was appointed by Governor Beshear to a full four-year term. Board member Joseph Haydon was also reappointed by the governor to a full four-year term.

The next meeting of the KLC’s board of directors will be Friday, March 21. The meeting will begin at 9:30 AM EST, and will be held at the KLC headquarters at 1011 West Main Street in Louisville. Committee meetings will begin at 8:30 AM EST.

New Edition of 'Quest for Gold' Crossword Game Supports Ontario’s Amateur Athletes

Olympians heading to Sochi, Russia benefit from Quest for Gold funding

TORONTO, Ontario (January 25, 2014) -- Canadian Olympians from Ontario are in the final days of preparing for the upcoming Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. While the athletes are focused on their sport, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) is supporting their dreams by providing many of them with essential funding through the provincial government’s Quest for Gold program.

Today Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Michael Chan, and Minister of Natural Resources and Sault Ste. Marie MPP, David Orazietti joined OLG Acting President and CEO, Tom Marinelli, to unveil a new edition of the popular OLG Instant game, QUEST FOR GOLD CROSSWORD. Proceeds of this lottery game are earmarked for the Quest for Gold program.

Since QUEST FOR GOLD launched in 2006, $83 million has been generated from lottery sales to assist approximately 4,000 unique Ontario athletes. As the Sochi games approach, 47 of the 58 Ontario athletes announced as being part of Team Canada have been supported by Quest for Gold funding.

Among those funding recipients are the members of Canada’s Men’s Olympic Curling Team, Team Jacobs from Sault Ste Marie. They were on hand to take part in today’s QUEST FOR GOLD CROSSWORD launch.

This was also a perfect opportunity to wish Team Jacobs the best of luck on behalf of all Ontarians as they begin their own quest for gold on the curling sheets in Sochi.

Team Jacobs is comprised of Brad Jacobs, Ryan Fry, E. J. Harnden and Ryan Harnden. “Support from the Quest for Gold program was critical in making our Olympic dream come true,” said team skip, Brad Jacobs. “The funding allowed us to travel to tournaments, pay for equipment and cover coaching fees. We would never have been able to pursue our goals without the financial support from the Quest for Gold program.”

Specific objectives of the program are:

Dutch State Lottery Operator De Lotto Signs Sponsorship with Hockey Federation to Further Promote Sporting Contributions

AMERSFOORT, Netherlands (January 28, 2014) -- Dutch state lottery operator De Lotto has signed a deal with the Royal Dutch Hockey Federation (KNHB) to become the new shirt sponsor of the Dutch national indoor men and women’s teams.

The deal sees the state lottery’s ‘Lotto’ game appear on the front of all national indoor hockey team shirts and continues a partnership which stretches back 50 years.

In a statement issued by Delotto, Erik Poel, CEO KNLTB said "The collaboration with The Lotto suits us very well for many years. We are pleased that Dutch Davis Cup team in the clash with the Czech Republic bears the name of Lotto.

Besides Dutch Davis Cup team this year is The Lotto KNLTB namesake to the national competition, the Lotto KNLTB Tennis Masters and is a partner at the World Team Cup. KNLTB in 2012 received more than 1.9 million Lotto funding. In addition to the annual remittance KNLTB in 2014 on the basis of the marketing rights filed an additional percentage of the returns from the Lotto were received.

POWERBALL® Game Creates More Than 500 Millionaires Each Year in the U.S.

Current Game Design Celebrates Two-Year Anniversary

AUSTIN, Texas (January 28, 2014) --This month marks the two-year anniversary of the current $2 Powerball® game design, and the improved features have paid off big for players in Texas and across the country. When the current game was introduced Jan.15, 2012, the Multi-State Lottery Association forecast at least 300 millionaires would be created each year, and Powerball has delivered. Nationally, in the last 24 months, the Powerball game created 1,013 millionaires, an average of more than 500 millionaires each year, or nine millionaires per week.

The $2 Powerball game was designed to offer larger starting jackpots that grow quickly, more chances to become a millionaire and better overall odds. In the past two years, Powerball has created the four largest jackpots in the game’s 20-plus-year history. The increased Match 5 prize of $1 million, or $2 million if the ticket includes Power Play®, gives players more chances to become a millionaire.

Nationally, in the past two years, 979 Match 5 tickets won a total of more than $1 billion in cash prizes; of these, 847 players received $1 million prizes and 133 players received $2 million prizes. Also, as a result of reducing overall odds, more than 160 million players in the U.S. have won a Powerball prize in the last two years, including 34 multi-million dollar jackpot prize winners.

We are thrilled that Powerball continues to exceed player expectations, allowing it to be a huge success for players and for public education in Texas,” said Gary Grief, executive director of the Texas Lottery.

With national sales of $11 billion, the new Powerball game has resulted in millions of dollars in retailer commissions and revenue to support worthwhile causes in every Powerball state. In Texas, $239.1 million has been generated to support public education since the Powerball changes took effect in 2012 and retailers have received $28.4 million in commissions. 

"Texas players have benefited from the new Powerball game, as more than 11,360,191 winning tickets have been sold in the state,” said Grief.  “Our players enjoy the chance to play for big prizes and the improved game has resulted in Texas having 43 winning tickets worth $1 million or more, including a jackpot prize of $40 million.”

Powerball jackpots start at $40 million and roll until the jackpot is won. Players win by matching the five white ball numbers (1-59) and the red Powerball number (1-35). There are eight other ways to win non-jackpot prizes ranging from $4 to $1 million or up to $2 million if the ticket includes Power Play. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are approximately 1 in 31.

North Carolina Lottery Increases Earnings in First Half of Year

RALEIGH, North Carolina (January 28, 2014) -- Thanks to strong ticket sales, the N.C. Education Lottery increased earnings for the state’s education programs by 10 percent in the first six months of fiscal year 2014.

The increase means an additional $23 million in earnings for education in the first half of the fiscal year when compared to the first six months of the previous year. As of Dec. 30, 2013, the lottery had raised $251 million for the state this year.

The good news for education is that if our sales stay strong we should have another record year of sales and earnings,” said Alice Garland, executive director of the lottery. “Our goal is to exceed half a billion in earnings for the first time ever."

"We thank our players for their interest in our games and wish them luck at winning prizes. We know every dollar we raise is a dollar our education programs need right now.”

On Tuesday, the lottery transferred $124.9 million in earnings from sales in the second quarter of the fiscal year, Oct. 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013, to the state. The transfer brought the total transferred this year to $278 million, including $27 million from higher-than-expected earnings in fiscal year 2013 that were included in the first transfer in October. The total amount transferred to the state since the lottery started in March 2006 now stands at $3.19 billion.

Sales in the first six months totaled $902.6 million, up $110.9 million, or 14 percent, from the same period the year before. The increase resulted primarily from a 21 percent jump in sales of instant tickets, the lottery’s most popular type of game. Strong Mega Millions ticket sales due to a $648 million jackpot in December also boosted revenues. Administrative expenses stayed flat at 4.24 percent of total revenue through December.

Lottery dollars support teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction and repair projects, prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, need-based college scholarships and financial aid, and digital learning initiatives.

Governor’s Proposed Budget Supports the Florida Lottery’s Education Mission

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (January 29, 2014) -- Governor Scott’s “It’s Your Money Tax Cut Budget” recommendations support the Florida Lottery’s core mission of maximizing revenues for the benefit of education in our state.  The $174.7 million proposal identified for the Florida Lottery underscores the Governor’s continued support of public education.  The Florida Lottery has contributed $26 billion to education since 1988, transferring more than $1.41 billion in fiscal year 2012-13 alone.

In order to help the Lottery continue to grow sales and maximize transfers to education, the Governor’s budget includes $4.9 million for an additional 300 Full Service Vending Machines to help the Lottery increase its distribution network, grow revenue, and increase transfers to education.  The Governor’s budget also provides an additional $12.5 million in funding for the Lottery’s Scratch-Off and Terminal gaming contracts as a result of the Lottery’s sales success over the past year and anticipated future growth.

The funding provided last year to implement a mobile sales tool to increase efficiencies for Lottery sales personnel has helped  the Governor reduce this year’s budget to reflect the cost savings and ensure that the Florida Lottery remains one of the most efficient lotteries in the nation. 

Governor Scott’s budget confirms his commitment to supporting education and creating jobs,” said Florida Lottery Secretary Cynthia O’Connell. “In support of the Governor’s vision, the Lottery will remain laser-focused on increasing sales and operating efficiently so that we can maximize our contributions to Florida’s education system.”

Widely recognized as a leader among lotteries in the nation, the Florida Lottery will continue to apply fiscally conservative principles in its daily operations and operate as a self-funding enterprise, raising profits for education by increasing sales and reducing administrative expenses.

In Fiscal Year 2014-15, the Florida Lottery will continue to launch new and exciting games; unveil enhancements to current game offerings; expand its retailer network; explore innovative alliances with public and private-sector partners; and implement a comprehensive marketing plan that includes non-traditional advertising, social media and further development of its Internet presence.
