Rhode Island Lottery Celebrates 40 Years

CRANSTON, Rhode Island (May 30, 2014) -- Friday, May 30, 2014, marks the 40th Anniversary of the first Rhode Island Lottery drawing. That momentous drawing took place at the State House for the $.50 game called "The Lot". Since then, the Rhode Island Lottery has exceeded $34.6 billion in sales and has transferred more than $5.3 billion to the State General Fund.

To commemorate this anniversary, the Lottery returns to the Statehouse this Friday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. with a special program and exhibit on the Lottery's evolution and its impact on Rhode Island. Wrapping up this celebration will be a live drawing of the recently added midday draw of "The Numbers" Game.

The 40th Anniversary slogan, "40 Years of Fun", is also a celebration of 40 years of winning. In fact, more than $26 billion in prizes have been awarded to players since the Lottery began in 1974 - that's an average of $1.8 million in prizes won per day.

None of this success would be possible without the Lottery's long-term partnership with GTECH Corporation, the architects of the systems utilized by the Lottery to generate, sell, and validate tickets.

All that technology is put to use every day by the more than 1,100 Lottery Retailers across the State, whose hard work selling Lottery products has resulted in more than $379.6 million in commissions earned since 1974 by the neighborhood "Mom and Pop" stores, restaurants, taverns, and corporate chains. In fact, some of the original Retailers from 1974 are still licensed Lottery Retailers today.

The Rhode Island Lottery remains steadfast in its commitment to maximize revenues for the State, while maintaining the trust and best interest of all Rhode Island citizens.

We would like to thank all of those who have supported the Lottery over the years, especially the players who have Played Responsibly and continue to enjoy the Lottery as it was intended when it started 40 years ago - a fun, positive way to generate revenue for the State of Rhode Island.

INTRALOT Sign IT Contract With OPAP S.A.

ATHENS, Greece (June 4, 2014) -- INTRALOT announces that it has signed an IT contract with OPAP S.A. The company will undertake the implementation of the new Data Centers, will provide hardware and system software, as well as services for the operation, maintenance, technical support and system evolution. The new contract is valid retrospectively as of 1/4/2014 and will expire on 31/7/2018.

The contract includes the provision of the use of the hardware and system software of Data Centers, the migration of all existing data and functionalities to the new Central System and upgrade LOTOS O/S to Enhanced LOTOS O/S, the granting of the licenses to use its software and, in particular, for the iFLEX Sports Betting Platform, the Data Warehouse System and the Loyalty Program Players’ Club. Moreover, INTRALOT will provide support services, including the maintenance of the Data Centers, as well as the on site maintenance of Points of Sale equipment, Support Center Services, Data Center Business Operation Support Services and the Continuous Development Services of the Application Software, among others.

Scientific Games to Provide Next Generation Central Monitoring System in South Australia

12,500 Gaming Machines to be Monitored by SGVideoTM System

NEW YORK, N.Y. Kambi Enters Eastern European Sports Betting Market Through Partnership with Iveriabet

Lottery Sales Continue to Stay Ahead of Last Year’s Mark

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (May 31, 2014) -- In today’s meeting of the Kentucky Lottery Corporation’s (KLC’s) board of directors, a budget for the next fiscal year was approved and an update was given on sales so far in FY14.

For FY14 sales through April, $718.7 million in tickets have been sold. This is $18.8 million more than last year, but $27.3 million short of budget due to lagging sales in the past two months of some games. Year-to-date income before transfer of dividends has been $188.6 million, which is $3.7 million more than last year but $4.9 million less than budgeted.

We’re hoping a solid Powerball run in the last few weeks of the fiscal year will help our sales return to where they need to be,” said the KLC’s Sr. VP of Finance Howard Kline.

For FY15, the board approved a budget calling for $935 million in sales and $238 million in dividends back to the Commonwealth.

Kline said increased Keno sales and the addition of a new multistate game should help draw game sales grow to $393 million next year.

"The sales growth we need to meet the funds counted on by the Commonwealth next year is quite honestly the largest challenge we’ve faced,” said KLC President and CEO Arch Gleason.

It’s a stretch, but the students who receive proceeds from the college scholarship and grant programs we fund are counting on us. I’m confident we’ll make it.”

In other business, the board approved:

  • The renewal of a lease with the Commonwealth’s Office of Technology for the KLC’s date back-up center
  • A contract with Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) for lottery ball testing, random number generator evaluation and related services;
  • A contract renewal with Bandy Carroll Hellige for advertising and related services, and;
  • Rules and/or amended rules and regulations for 22 scratch-off tickets.

 

The next meeting of the KLC’s board of directors will be August 1. The meeting will begin at 9:30 AM EST, and will be held at the KLC headquarters at 1011 West Main Street in Louisville. Committee meetings will begin at 8:30 AM EST.

Wyoming Lottery Still Seeking Retailer Applications

CHEYENNE, Wyoming (June 3, 2014) -- Wyoming retail business owners interested in selling Powerball® and Mega Millions® tickets at their retail locations when the Wyoming Lottery goes live on August 24 still have time to submit an application to become a WyoLotto™ retailer.

According to Wyoming Lottery CEO, Jon Clontz, despite the successful launch of the application process on May 21, the lottery is encouraging interested retailers who haven't yet applied to submit an application. "We've received around 300 applications online so far, and several by mail, representing more than 500 locations," Clontz said.

"Our goal is to place a maximum of 450 to 500 terminals statewide, but we'll certainly experience attrition as a result of the vetting process. That means retailers who haven't applied yet still have a good chance of becoming a WyoLotto ticket seller."

Clontz says the lottery wants to ensure that players across the state have an opportunity to buy tickets, so creating an adequately dispersed network of retail locations is important. "We're extremely pleased with the response from retailers, so far," he said. "Virtually every type of retail business is represented, from gas stations and convenience stores to bowling alleys, bars, restaurants -- you name it. That's important, because we want to make sure it's convenient for people to play, even if they live in less-populated areas of the state."

Business owners who submit applications must undergo a thorough review. The vetting process includes financial and criminal background checks on all applicants. Lottery officials say that a certain percentage may not pass the checks, so they encourage additional applications until they've filled all of the available slots.

Clontz said the lottery will also maintain a 90-day waiting list of approved applicants so he can quickly fill future vacancies as they occur. "There's no downside to applying and we have kept the process simple, so if a retailer's interested in selling lottery tickets, it makes sense to get an application in."

Lottery Game Spikes Single-Day Sales Record

New Mexico Lottery Scratcher Sales Highest In Four Years

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (June 4, 2014) --The New Mexico Lottery sold approximately $321,000 in Scratcher tickets yesterday, its highest one-day sales since March 2010.

The lottery introduced six new Scratchers yesterday, including the $2 “I Love New Mexico.”  The game features six iconic state landmarks photographed by New Mexico residents.

Earlier this year, the lottery began a strategy to launch multiple new Scratcher games on the first Tuesday of the month. 

Our ‘Super Tuesday’ goal is to create a more exciting marketplace for players and generate more profit for Legislative Lottery Scholarships,” said Karla Wilkinson, the lottery’s product manager.  “Yesterday’s sales were very strong, a sign that we’re on the right track.”

The lottery’s Fiscal Year 2014 goal is to sell approximately $135.3 million in tickets and generate approximately $40.6 million in profit for the Legislative Lottery Scholarship program. 

As of April, FY 2014 profits total approximately $34.5 million.  The fiscal year ends June 30.

Since its inception in 1996, the New Mexico Lottery has raised $607 million for education and more than 90,000 students have attended college on Legislative Lottery Scholarships.

New Mexico Lottery Launch Jackpot Game, Afternoon Pick 3 Drawings

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (June 5, 2014) -- The New Mexico Lottery is bringing more fun to two games played only in New Mexico.

Jackpot Quickster Game

On Sunday, a Quickster game called “Red Hot Jackpot Bingo” goes on sale. The $5 game offers a starting jackpot of $1,000 that will grow larger until hit.  The game includes more than 75,000 non-jackpot prizes ranging between $5 and $100.

In Red Hot Jackpot Bingo, players look for the caller’s numbers on two Bingo cards.  A prize legend at the end of the ticket reveals winning patterns and prize values.  The game’s overall odds are 1 in 3.06.

The Quickster line launched in 2012 with top prizes of $100.  Tickets print from the same machines that print tickets for drawing games such as Powerball® and Mega Millions®. 

Afternoon Pick 3 Drawing

Starting Monday, Pick 3 will offer a 1 p.m. drawing in addition to an evening drawing at 9:30.  Players can choose the mid-day drawing, the evening drawing or both.

In Pick 3, players win by matching three numbers from zero to nine in one of three play styles selected when the ticket is purchased. 

Tickets cost $1 per play per drawing.  Drawings are Monday through Saturday.  Prizes range between $5 and $500.

Australasian Gaming Expo; Mark These Dates: From 12 – 14 August, 2014

SYDNEY, Australia (June 3, 2014) -- In today’s fast-paced gaming market, it is important for operators, affiliates and developers to stay on the up-and-up on the latest trends and regulations. In Australia’s gambling industry, key players can do so at the Australasian Gaming Expo which will take place in August this year.

The exhibition will take place at the Sydney Exhibition Centre at Glebe Island from 12 – 14 August, 2014.

So far, 160 different exhibitors have signed up to show off their wares to members of the local gambling market. The event will provide a cross-section of gaming industry professionals, such as furniture, IT, building services, marketing, interior design, security and point of sale systems.

For the first time, the Australasian Gaming Expo will take place in a new location. It is a big change for the event, but organisers are sure that attendees will be impressed with the new location.

“Located a stone’s throw from the iconic Glebe Island Bridge, changes include a venue that greets visitors with breath-taking Harbour Views on two sides, alfresco cafes and once inside the exhibition, the space takes advantage of a more naturally lit interior,” reads a statement from the Gaming Technology Association.

A wide range of poker machine manufacturers will be in attendance, including Aristocrat, Bally Technologies, Ainsworth, Aruze Gaming, Konami, IGT and Atlas Gaming. So, attendees will be able to learn more about the wide range of poker machine technology that is available in the Australasian gambling market.

The host is expecting this year’s event to build on the success of the 2013 Australasian Gaming expo, which saw thousands of attendees and the introduction of many new and exciting poker machines. In a new location and over 160 exhibitors planned, the 2014 event will be a big hit among Australian gaming industry professionals.

ISGA Launch Independent Research Into Social Games

LONDON, U.K. (May 27, 2014) -- ISGA announces new independent academic research into the evolution, use and impact of social games.

The global industry body representing social games companies with over 300 million players, the International Social Games Association (ISGA), has today released independent academic research by Harvest Strategy into the evolution, use and impact of social games. The report undertakes both a review of existing academic literature and data surrounding social games as well as a survey of consumer behaviour and perceptions across Australia, the UK, France and the US, “the 2014 Consumer Survey.”

Social games are an increasingly important part of the digital economy. The report states that the industry is projected to reach US$7 billion in revenue by 2015 and it is estimated than 34% of the total Internet population will be playing social games this year. Games are far from just for young people. The researchers’ comprehensive review of demographic data shows no gender bias and that the average player is 40 years old. This supports the ISGA’s own recently collated data on the audience for its members’ social games, which shows that 99.5% of users are over 18.

The report demonstrates that social games played on mobile devices are a natural technological evolution of traditional games practices based around strategy, skill, chance and social interaction, and that the rise of the “freemium pricing” model has been driven by underlying changes in technology and consumer behaviour. The ease of online digital distribution and the continuing problem of piracy have forced downward pressure on prices. The diffusion of mobile technology (for example smartphones and tablets) has driven demand for more flexible game playing experiences. The freemium pricing model has enabled the video games industry to successfully harness these changes in technology and consumer demand.

Amongst the report’s findings are that in-game expenditure is typically low and that average players are spending no money on games at all. According to the 2014 Consumer Survey, a high proportion of people playing social games are not spending money on in-app purchases. Less than 1 in 10 players spent money on a social game on their last playing occasion. Those players that do make in-app purchases are spending low amounts, typically less than one unit of local currency (i.e. 87% of French transactions were less than €1, and 90% of UK transactions were less than £1).

Contrary to speculation by commentators, the research finds no evidence that social casino games are converting people to real money gamblers or causing problem gambling. The report concludes that social games are played for different reasons to gambling such as social interaction and relationship building across social networks. The consumer data also indicates that consumers are able to distinguish and understand the difference between social games and real money gaming.

As part of its ongoing commitment into researching the impact and reception of social games, the ISGA is also pleased to announce the commissioning of a new independent research project, which will focus specifically on issues of concern surrounding social games and younger users.

As an industry we are very pleased to have a new and robust piece of research to help put context and facts into the discussion on social games. This report helps to explain what the social games sector is and who are playing social games, and that it will bring clarity to the discussion surrounding social games, forming a solid basis for constructive dialogue between industry and key stakeholders.
