Lotteries Make Bright Start to 2014; Q1 Sales for 2014 Up 8.9% on Q1 Sales for 2013

BASEL, Switzerland (June 11, 2014) --Defying expectations, lotteries made a bright start to 2014, with first-quarter on first-quarter sales increasing by 8.9%, the best opening to a new year since 2012. The growth in global lottery sales was again grounded in strong performances from the Asia Pacific and Latin American regions, with additional contributions from the North American market and, surprisingly, the European region.

The Latin American region enjoyed the strongest showing of any market in Q1 2014, with participating Latin American lotteries reporting an aggregate first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 24.1%. Growth in the Latin American region was once again driven by Argentina’s Lotería Nacional Sociedad del Estado. The Argentinian national lottery continued its impressive growth streak, reporting a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 31%.

The growth in sales at Lotería Nacional Sociedad del Estado is attributable to a number of factors, including: modifications and improvements made to their product range, which have resulted in the provision of a better range of gaming offers to their customers; the success of a new lottery game, “Lotto con Jackpot”; and the strong performance of various concessions, among them VLTs and the bingo halls of the city of Buenos Aires.

Also performing strongly was Brazil’s Caixa Econômica Federal, which recorded an increase in sales of 18% for Q1 2014 against Q1 2013. Sales growth at the Brazilian national lottery was largely driven by the success of three lotto products: Lotofácil, Mega-Sena, and Timemania.

Lotofácil enjoyed record sales in January 2014, while quarter-on-quarter sales of Mega-Sena and Timemania increased dramatically owing to the large jackpots on offer in February and March 2014. A successful advertising campaign, conducted from December 2013 to March 2014, proved very helpful in promoting all three lotto games.

The Asia Pacific region also performed strongly, with participating Asia Pacific lotteries witnessing an aggregate in sales of 13.6% for the first three months of 2014, as against the first three months of 2013. Once again, the engine of growth in the Asia Pacific region was the participating mainland Chinese lotteries. The China Sports Lottery delivered a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 17.1%, with the China Welfare Lottery following on closely behind with an increase in sales of 15.6% for the period January–March 2014, as against the period January–March 2013. Across mainland China, lottery ticket sales rose 13.6%, instant lottery ticket sales rose 11%, and video lottery sales rose 25.4%, all over the January to March period, with the Guangdong, Hunan, Gansu, and Shandong provinces and the municipality of Shanghai witnessing the biggest increase in sales. Running in a strong third in the Asia Pacific market was Australia’s Lotterywest, which oversaw an increase in sales of 11.5% for Q1 2014, as opposed to Q1 2013.

In the North American market, participating North American lotteries witnessed an aggregate increase in sales of 6.6% for the first three months of 2014, as against the first three months of 2013.

The upswing in the North American market was somewhat surprising, given that the U.S. economy contracted by 1% in the first quarter of 2014. Previously, the government had estimated that GDP growth would expand at the rate of 0.1 percent over the first quarter. The contraction in the U.S. economy, the first in three years, was occasioned by one of the worst winters in the U.S. in living memory, with economists estimating subsequently that the severe weather there might have cut as much as 1.5 percentage points from GDP growth. Apparently, however, lottery sales were impervious to the bad weather, with a number of lotteries across the continent seeing their sales increase quarter-on-quarter. The growth in sales in the North American region was spearheaded by the California Lottery, which saw its sales rise by 20.6% on a first-quarter on first-quarter basis. The increase in sales at the California Lottery was driven on the one hand by growth in Powerball sales—Powerball was introduced in California in April 2013—and on the other hand by the successful introduction of a new US$20 Scratchers game. Canada’s Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation also performed strongly, with sales up by 14.8% for Q1 2014 over Q1 2013. Other North American lotteries seeing their sales increase were the Kentucky lottery and the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation, which recorded first-quarter on first-quarter increases in sales of 6% and 7.5% respectively.

In Europe, sales among participating European lotteries increased by 4.2% on aggregate in the first three months of 2014, as against the first three months of 2013. This was the best quarterly performance by participating lotteries in Europe since Q1 2012, when sales grew by 4.3% quarter-on-quarter. With lottery sales in Europe having languished in mostly neutral or negative territory throughout 2013, the upswing in sales in Q1 2014 was even more notable than the corresponding upturn in sales in the U.S.

Schafer Systems Inc.

The surprise increase in sales was set against the backdrop of the continuing stagnation of the European economy, where seasonally adjusted GDP rose by only 0.2% in the euro area (EA18) for the quarter and by only 0.3% in the wider EU28. Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, seasonally adjusted GDP rose by 0.9% in the euro area (EA18) and by 1.4% in the EU28 in the first quarter of 2014, after rises of 0.5% and 1.0% respectively in the previous quarter. Participating European lotteries were able to shrug off the wider economy’s torpor, however, with several such lotteries enjoying robust quarter-on-quarter increases in sales. At Hungary’s Szerencsejáték Zrt., sales for Q1 2014 were up by 33.9% on sales for Q1 2013. Several elements contributed to the growth in sales at Szerencsejáték Zrt., including: a shift in demand to faster-paced games such as Keno and instant tickets; changes and improvements to the instant ticket product range, resulting in increased sales of instant tickets at higher price points; the launch in mid-2013 of a highly successful online betting site, TippmixPro; and the offer of a significant jackpot in Q1 2014 on a main product, Ötöslotto (5/90 lotto). In Greece, OPAP’s situation continued to improve, with sales up 11.1% quarter-on-quarter. This was the fifth consecutive quarter of growth for the Greek national lottery, even as Greece’s GDP contracted by 3.9% over the course of 2013. First-quarter on first-quarter sales increased by 6% at both Portugal’s Santa Casa and France’s Française des Jeux, while Norway’s Norsk Tipping enjoyed a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 5.2%.

The African region saw an aggregate increase in sales of 7.6% for Q1 2014 over Q1 2013. Contributing strongly to the good showing of the African region was Morocco’s La Marocaine des Jeux, which reported a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 30.3%. Growth at La Marocaine des Jeux continued to be due to the increase in sales of its Cote & Sport (Oddset) game. Building on its successful startup in 2009, the Mauritius National Lottery recorded a 15.9% increase in sales for the first three months of 2014, as against the first three months of 2013. And for its part, Ghana’s national lottery reported an increase in sales of 8.6% over the same quarter-on-quarter timeframe.

This edition of the WLA Quarterly Lottery Sales Indicator sees Hungary’s Szerencsejáték Zrt. and the Mauritius National Lottery added to the list of lotteries participating in the WLA Quarterly Lottery Sales Indicator. We extend a warm welcome to our newest members and look forward to bringing you the mid-year results shortly.

GBGC - Singapore Tops Global Gambling Chart

ISLE OF MAN (June 10, 2014) -- Singapore has toppled Australia from the top of the gambling spend per capita list, just a couple of years after the two integrated casino resorts opened in the sovereign city-state.

New research for Global Betting and Gaming Consultants’ 9th edition of the Global Gambling Report shows that Singaporeans spend US$ 1,376 per capita on gambling per year, some way ahead of the Australians (US$961).

Prior to the opening of the casinos in Singapore the city state did not feature in the top five of the gambling spending charts, so it has been a rapid rise to the top in just a few years.

Canada is in third place with a spend of US$494 per capita, some way behind the top two jurisdictions.

The expansion of gambling in Italy, particularly internet gambling and gaming machines, has seen Italian spend per capita hit US$400, putting it in 5th place behind Hong Kong (US$454).

New York Lottery and VLT 2013-14 Record Profit Hits $3.17 Billion

Highest Amount Ever In History of North American Lotteries for A Single Beneficiary – NYS Schools

Lottery’s Official Press Release

NEW YORK N.Y. (June 6, 2014) -- The New York State Gaming Commission today announced traditional Lottery sales and video lottery net win for fiscal year 2013-2014 totaled $9.23 billion, producing a profit of $3.17 billion for education, a 4.2 percent increase over fiscal year 2012-2013.

This marks the 14th consecutive year of growth in revenue for the most profitable Lottery in North America.

We are proud of the significant contribution the Lottery makes to support New York’s schools and we are very pleased to have set yet another sales record for the past fiscal year,” said Robert Williams, Acting Executive Director of the New York State Gaming Commission. “We look forward to continuing this record of success in the future.”

Total sales and net win increased $292.2 million or 3.3 percent over the prior year. Profit for education increased $127.2 million or 4.2 percent over the prior year.

The Traditional Lottery business benefited from strong growth of the Mega Millions game, including the second highest jackpot of $648 million in December 2013. In addition, there was continued growth in Quick Draw due to better market penetration and retailer support efforts. Increases in video lottery net win (total bets less prizes) and profits were reported at five of the nine of the Video Lottery Gaming facilities, led by Resorts World Casino New York City.

All Lottery profits go to funding K-12 education in New York State. The Lottery’s fiscal year 2013-2014 profit of $3.17 billion represents approximately 15 percent of total state aid to local school districts.

Traditional Lottery:

The Traditional Lottery business includes draw games such as Powerball, Mega Millions, and Numbers, and scratch-off games such as Win for Life and Cashword. Traditional Lottery sales increased 2.9 percent or $205.3 million with a $2.26 billion profit, a result of increases in Mega Millions, Numbers, Win 4 and Quick Draw. The aid to education generated through the combination of all Traditional Lottery games increased 3.6 percent or $78.3 million.

Sales for Mega Millions increased substantially during a roll up that started on October 4 and produced the second highest jackpot of $648 million before being hit on December 17, 2013. Strong sales for Powerball were also recorded for a roll up that ended on May 18, 2013 with a jackpot of $590.5 million. Quick Draw sales increased 12.8 percent or $74.2 million over the previous year. Increased promotion and advertising contributed to sales increases of 3.1 percent and 4.7 percent for Numbers and Win 4 respectively.

Sales for Lotto declined 14.1 percent and sales for scratch-off games decreased 1.3 percent from the previous year.

Video Lottery Gaming:

Video Lottery Gaming generated a record $1.91 billion in net win and $916.4 million in profit. Resorts World Casino alone contributed $792.6 million in net win and $368 million in profit for education. The year-over-year increase in net win from all nine Video Lottery Gaming facilities totaled $87 million or 4.8 percent, with an increase in profit for education of $48.9 million or 5.6 percent.

Annual net win from Resorts World Casino totaled $792.6 million, an increase of $96 million or 13.8 percent from the prior fiscal year.

Net win for Batavia Downs Gaming totaled $47.1 million, an increase of $2 million or 4.4 percent, largely attributable to an October 2013 expansion of the gaming floor.

Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack’s net win totaled $130.8 million, an increase of $1.2 million or 0.9 percent, due in part to the opening of an expanded gaming floor.

Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway achieved annual net win of $547.2 million, an increase of $1.9 million or 0.3 percent.

Saratoga Casino and Raceway, the oldest of the state’s Video Lottery Gaming facilities, realized an annual net win of $158.9 million, an increase of $200,000 or 0.1 percent.

The remaining Video Lottery Gaming facilities posted net losses year-over-year due to a variety of factors, including weather.

Where Lottery Money Goes:

Overall, 96 percent of the Lottery’s $9.23 billion in combined sales and net win was returned to New Yorkers in the form of prizes, aid to education, and commissions to retailers and video gaming facilities.

Prizes paid totaled more than $4.3 billion from Traditional Lottery games.

Aid to education totaled $3.17 billion.

Commissions paid to more than 18,000 Traditional Lottery retailers and nine Video Lottery Gaming facilities totaled $1.29 billion. The Lottery paid $439 million in commissions to Traditional Lottery retailers and $851 million in commissions to Video Lottery Gaming facilities.

The entire operation of the Traditional Lottery, including advertising, marketing, printing, systems, telecommunications, finance and administration is funded from just 4 percent of sales.

New York Lottery revenue is distributed to local school districts by the same statutory formula used to distribute other state aid to education. New Jersey Lottery Release Fiscal Year 2013 Annual Report

TRENTON, New Jersey (June 10, 2014) – New Jersey Lottery Executive Director Carole Hedinger today released the Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2013 and reported that the Lottery contributed $1.08 billion to the State for aid to education and institutions, an increase from $950 million in Fiscal Year 2012.

The contribution includes a $120 million accelerated guarantee payment from the Northstar New Jersey Lottery Growth Management Services contract. The revenue without the accelerated payment was $962 million.

The Annual Report features Fiscal Year 2013 milestones including the four multi-state jackpot game wins by New Jersey Lottery players in one year.

The Lottery had a remarkable year in so many ways,” Executive Director Carole Hedinger said. “We faced the challenges imposed by Superstorm Sandy, but then we came back with the greatest number of New Jersey multi-state game jackpot winners we have ever had in a single year.”

Lottery players received a record payout in Fiscal Year 2013. The Lottery awarded more than $1.67 billion in prizes, up from $1.61 billion in Fiscal Year 2012. There were 81 top-tier winning tickets during the year, with cash prizes ranging from $650,000 to $211 million. There were approximately 107 million winning tickets validated and paid during the year.

In addition, the Fiscal Year was the culmination of two years of leadership groundwork focused on restructuring operations and implementing the Lottery Growth Management contract. The contract details the sales, marketing and advertising services that will be provided to the Lottery by the contracted management company. The process required extensive research, review, planning and ultimately, contract execution on June 20, 2013.

I am confident that these changes will provide even greater efficiency to the Lottery’s operations and thereby increase revenues in the coming years,” Hedinger said.

The Lottery is the State’s fourth largest individual revenue producer. A complete accounting of lottery revenue distribution is included in the Annual Report and on the NJLottery.net website in the Where the Money Goes section.

The more than 6,500-strong Lottery retailer network earned more than $157 million in commissions, up from $154 million in FY 2012.

“The Lottery continues to function as an integral component of the state’s economy,” Hedinger said. “It affords small-, mid-size and large businesses a revenue generation source and additional marketing opportunities that non-Lottery retailers do not have.”
