North American Lotteries Poised for Innovative New Year

GENEVA, Ohio (October 6, 2014) – Citing new games and innovations planned for the year ahead, attendees were upbeat last week at the lottery industry’s annual conference and trade show in Atlantic City, N.J., produced by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL).

For Gary Grief, Executive Director of the Texas Lottery Commission, the conference completed his year-long term as NASPL President in 2013-2014. In his closing comments, Grief praised the industry for reaching an unprecedented level of collaboration and for its support in making NASPL the “go to” organization for lottery research and education. “Lotteries and vendors alike have never been more aligned in our pursuit of cooperative initiatives,” he explained. “I couldn’t be more excited about our industry’s success in generating revenues for great state causes and the potential going forward.”

To further the path that Grief and previous NASPL presidents have charted for the industry, members elected a new slate of officers for the 2014-2015 year. Chosen as President was Terry Rich, Chief Executive Officer of the Iowa Lottery Authority, who pledged to emphasize innovation and “the need to tell our story through marketing and communications initiatives.”

Other officers who will join Rich and Grief on the NASPL Executive Board of Directors for the coming year are:

  • 1st Vice President – Paula Harper Bethea, Executive Director of the South Carolina Education Lottery
  • 2nd Vice President – May Scheve Reardon, Executive Director of the Missouri Lottery.
  • Treasurer – Rose Hudson, President of the Louisiana Lottery Corp
  • Secretary – Charlie McIntyre, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Lottery
  • Region I Director – Carole Hedinger, Executive Director of the New Jersey Lottery
  • Region II Director – Alice Garland, Executive Director of the North Carolina Education Lottery
  • Region III Director – Randy Miller, Director of the North Dakota Lottery
  • Region IV Director – David Barden, Chief Executive Officer of the New Mexico Lottery
  • Incoming President, Interprovincial Lottery Corp. – David Loeb, President of the Western Canada Lottery Corp.

Lottery products continue to serve as an affordable, local entertainment option, and the games we offer generate more than $20 billion annually in net revenues in the United States alone to the good causes we help support,” said Rich. “To keep moving forward, we’ll continue to investigate new ideas and possibilities for lottery products, understanding that our success ultimately rewards players, retailers and the public through good causes. ‘New and improved’ will be our mantra as we freshen our games and develop new products.”

Rich cited MONOPOLY Millionaires’ Club™, launching in 23 states on October 19, as an example of the innovations to come. “It’s the first multi-jurisdictional lottery draw game which is associated with a well-known national icon brand,” explained Rich. He also emphasized the importance of building on the integrity that is the hallmark of the lottery industry, and communicating expectations for players, lotteries, retailers and the elected officials who oversee lotteries in each jurisdiction.

GTECH and Sony Pictures Consumer Products Announce Wheel of Fortune® and Jeopardy!® License Agreement for Lottery Products

New Multi-State Lottery To Make "More & More Millionaires"

LOS ANGELES, California (October 1, 2014) -- In less than 30 days, a group of lottery officials will do something that hasn't been done in more than 12 years - create a new multi-state lottery game. The new lottery game, called MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB, will pool prize money to make "more and more millionaires." The news comes as the lottery industry's largest annual gathering at the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL) conference commences.

"Lotteries across the country came together and listened to what players wanted," said Rebecca Paul Hargrove, President of the Tennessee Lottery. "With three chances to win $1 million, a $5 popular price point, and the ability to unlock more and more millionaires, MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB is expected to spread the wealth across the country like no other game in lottery history."

The new multi-state premium lottery game and weekly one hour prime time television show was created by Scientific Games Corporation (NASDAQ: SGMS), a leading developer of technology-based products and services and associated content for worldwide gaming and lottery markets. The new lottery game goes on sale in 23* participating states on Sunday, October 19 where lottery tickets are sold, with more lotteries** planning to join in the following months. The population of lottery jurisdictions selling the game at launch will be approximately 175 million. By the first week of March 2015, that population is expected to be close to 250 million.

With three different ways to win a million dollars, MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB is the first game to combine the high-stakes and rich rewards of multi-state lottery gaming with the fun and entertainment of a national television game show. The television series will feature players selected from an audience comprised mainly of ticket holders drawn from those who registered their lottery tickets online or via a smartphone app, and will be hosted by actor and comedian Billy Gardell ("Mike & Molly," "You, Me & Dupree").

The uniquely designed MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB draw game is expected to generate more simultaneous millionaires than any other game in lottery history. The prize pool will begin with a $15 million Top Prize and ten $1 million Club Prizes. If the Top Prize is not won in a given week, it will continue to increase in value for the next three weeks until it reaches $25 million. For as long as no one wins the Top Prize, all additional prize money will be allocated to fund additional $1 million Club Prizes until someone wins the Top Prize. Winning the Top Prize will unleash the $1 million Club Prizes. With the draw taking place on Friday evenings at 11:15 pm (ET), literally hundreds of players across the country could wake up Saturday morning as millionaires.

This new approach to a national lottery draw game was created by Scientific Games under license from Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) and is based on the iconic MONOPOLY™  brand, which is one of the most well recognized brands in the world.

MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB is the first multi-state draw game at the $5 price point in the United States, though $5 is the most popular price point for instant scratch ticket games. This $5 price point strengthens the game's play value while differentiating it within lottery draw game portfolios.

Lottery players can register their tickets online to build MONOPOLY-themed Property Sets that, when complete, earn an entry into a drawing for the chance to appear on the nationally televised game show "MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB," which premieres in February 2015. Thousands of players will win a five-day, four-night trip for two to Las Vegas to be in the studio audience of a "MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB" taping.

Contestants on the show will then be selected at random from the audience to play a series of games, each with a MONOPOLY theme, each of which will offer cash and other prizes valued up to $100,000. Lotto New Zealand Launch New Game Play 3

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (October 6, 2014) -- Lotto New Zealand has launched a brand new game today called Play 3, which provides an alternative to its traditional lottery games.

RGA Calls on Greece to Open Online Gambling Market to Competition

ATHENS, Greece (Oct 2, 204) -- At the Greek Gaming Conference 2014 today the RGA will outline its concerns about the Greek online gambling regime and will make the case instead for the introduction of an open, regulated and fairly taxed market that would be to the benefit of both the Government and Greek consumers.

The Remote Gambling Association (“the RGA”) has consistently stated that the only viable long term market for online gambling in Greece is one that is open to multiple licensees who can provide the value, choice and range of products that are demanded by consumers. This is the only way to ensure that customers get the protection of a Greek licensing system and the Greek Government can benefit from taxation paid by licensed operators.

When the Greek authorities partially opened up the online gambling market in 2012 they allowed 24 EU-licensed gambling companies to provide online sports betting legally. It is estimated that they will pay almost €50 million gross gambling revenue tax to the Greek State in 2014.

Greek customers therefore already have a range of operators to bet with and have been protected through a robust licensing regime.

Now the Greek authorities, in a move designed to shore up the privatisation of OPAP, are intending to close down the 24 operators and create an online sports betting monopoly for OPAP.

The European Commission should have considerable concerns where markets are closed down without good reason and today the RGA will explain that those should include:

  • The Greek Government has consistently failed to implement its own laws to open up the online gambling market. Current legislation allows for the full opening of the online gambling market with licensing of online gambling operators but it has been limited to 24 temporary licenses which are now under threat of removal.
  • The Commission must at least have suspicions that the motivation for not offering licences for online gambling in the past two years had nothing to do with consumer protection but was designed to sell the Government’s shares in OPAP shares at the highest possible price. OPAP has been granted the monopoly without the proper tendering process. Even if a monopoly could be justified, and that is very difficult to believe, this means that other potential bidders have not had the opportunity to compete for the licence.
  • OPAP is a long established and successful business in Greece, but it is very inexperienced in the field of online gambling and it is not credible to suggest that it is better placed to protect consumers than companies who have been active in the sector for many years.
  • The Greek Government has not followed the correct European Union procedure for the implementation of legislation and has delayed responses to requests for information.

It puts customers at risk by encouraging them to use unlicensed operators if they do not want to be restricted to the limited offer of OPAP. That will inevitably deny the Greek Government millions of Euros in gambling and associated taxes.

Holders of the 24 temporary licences have demonstrated that a well regulated regime has benefits for all concerned. An extension of this limited freedom to a fully regulated and taxed market can only widen those benefits.

In the absence of constructive progress to introduce an open, transparent and fair online gambling regime in Greece, the RGA will be relying on all legitimate options at its disposal, including legal challenges to the EU and the Greek courts, in order to get to a legal, clear, workable and fair resolution.”

Camelot UK Lotteries Limited Announce Half-Year Financial Results

LONDON, U.K. (October 6, 2014) -- Camelot UK Lotteries Limited (‘Camelot’) today announced that total UK National Lottery ticket sales for the first six months of its 2014/15 financial year (1 April – 27 September 2014) were £3,469.8 million, an increase of £158.0 million on the corresponding period last year and the second-highest interim total since The National Lottery launched in 1994.

During the period, Camelot generated £867.71 million for National Lottery Good Causes – taking the total raised to date to over £32 billion. National Lottery funding has now enabled more than 430,000 individual awards to be made across the UK – the equivalent of 138 National Lottery-funded projects in every postcode district. Over the same period, Camelot awarded £1,926.2 million in prizes to players – taking the total paid out to over £53 billion and the total number of lottery millionaires to more than 3,600.

Camelot’s overall performance over the half-year was driven by strong growth in both Lotto, following its successful re-launch last year, and instant play games – with sales of the latter breaking a number of records as a result of the launch of 30 innovative new games, higher prize payouts and the continuing rollout of up to 10,000 standalone terminals to meet untapped demand for National Lottery Scratchcards.

Total sales over the half-year would undoubtedly have been even higher had EuroMillions enjoyed as many big jackpot draws as it did in the first half of 2013/14 and had there been a repeat of last year’s special ‘100 UK Millionaires Raffle’ draw. Camelot is confident that its plans to refresh EuroMillions with a raft of exciting changes – which have always been planned for the second half of 2014/15 and include the introduction, for the first time ever, of some great non-cash prizes – will drive sales of the game over the second six months.

Over the same period, £807.7 million was paid to the Government in Lottery Duty and £304.5 million was paid to retailers in commission. Camelot’s profit after tax in 2013/14 was £58.5 million. In line with previous years, this represented less than 1% of total revenue, while over 90% of total revenue went back to winners and society.

People's Postcode Lottery Deploys Postgres from EnterpriseDB to Expand Charitable Programs

BEDFORD, Massachusetts (October 6, 2014) - EnterpriseDB (EDB), the leading worldwide provider of enterprise-class Postgres products and database compatibility solutions, has today announced People's Postcode Lottery (PPL), a lottery management organization that supports charitable trusts and projects, has chosen to deploy EDB's Postgres Plus Advanced Server. People's Postcode Lottery in the U.K. has raised more than $62 million for charity. The organization needed to update its core lottery system to lower costs and support an increase in transactions. Instead, PPL looked for a new solution and selected EDB's Postgres Plus Advanced Server as its database with Red Hat JBoss Fuse to support the integration with internal and external applications. The organization worked with Trivento, a solutions provider based in the Netherlands, on the project due to Trivento's experience with charitable organizations and the available combination of the EDB and Red Hat software products.

Alec Burrett, head of data services at People's Postcode Lottery, explained: "We had challenging goals for this year to expand but also reduce operational costs by 25 percent. Rick brings 36 years of gaming industry experience to his new role, having previously held key positions for several major manufacturers in the US. Meitzler, who will be based in Chicago, IL, joins NOVOMATIC after 3 years at Bally Technologies, where he was Director of Sales in the Midwest USA, including the Illinois VGT market.  Previously, he helped bring Ainsworth Game Technologies into the North American market as the Senior Vice President of North American Operations.  He spent his first 30 years in various engineering and sales roles for Bally Technologies.

Shoutz Wins Big at 2014 Global Gaming Expo

Shoutz, Inc. won two American Gaming Association Communications Awards during the 2014 Global Gaming Expo, the gaming-entertainment industry’s largest trade show.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (October 8, 2014) -- Shoutz, Inc. won two American Gaming Association Communications Awards during the 2014 Global Gaming Expo, the gaming-entertainment industry’s largest trade show.

Each year, the AGA “recognizes outstanding advertising, public relations, marketing and financial and corporate communications in the gaming-entertainment industry,” with their Communications Awards.

Shoutz’s mobile application, LotteryHUB, is an official app of Powerball and Mega Millions. Shoutz’s marketing through the LotteryHUB app earned them first prizes in the Best Mobile Marketing and Best Direct Digital Marketing categories in this year’s Communications Awards.

This is the second year in a row that Shoutz has won the top prize in the Best Mobile Marketing category. In 2013, their winning entry demonstrated the highly successful launch of LotteryHUB.

Brazil FIFA World Cup - One-Time Revenue Boost or Sustainable Industry Turnaround?

  • New Q3 2014 online gambling data report revealed
  • Comprehensive quarterly report analysing updated benchmarks, KPIs, trends, ... covering all sectors of the online gambling industry

 

LONDON / MUNICH, (October 8, 2014) -- The first half of 2014 was marked above all by the FIFA World Cup and some events, such as the PokerStars acquisition, that shook up the industry. Therefore, it's again time for MECN’s researchers to publish their new Q3 2014 Online Gambling Quarterly report. This report covers online gambling industry benchmarks, KPIs, and related topics and comes to mixed conclusions in its analysis of the overall state of the industry.

FIFA World Cup boosted revenue growth

The analyses of the financial results of a large number of online gambling operators show that the growth rates of many KPIs and financial figures (e.g., total revenue, ...) rose in Q2 2014 and H1 2014 mostly due to the FIFA World Cup.

  • The Q2 2014 average total revenue growth rate (compared to the year before, across all verticals/segments) was at 19%, up from 5% in Q1 2014.
  • In H2 2014 the average total revenue growth (compared to the year before, across all verticals/segments) was 9%, up from 5% in H1 2014.
  • The next quarters will tell whether the FIFA World Cup had only a one-time effect or served perhaps as the starting signal for the market’s recovery.

 

Industry climate only "satisfactory" with no improvements likely in the future

Despite the recent revenue growth, most of the experts surveyed in MECN’s panel assess the current business climate as only "satisfactory" (on a scale ranging from "poor" to "satisfactory" to "good"). Martin Oelbermann, co-author of the study, explains further: “It seems that since fall 2013 the business climate assessment has stayed at "satisfactory" without any major changes - neither for the worse nor for the better". Additionally, the market insiders surveyed also do not expect the business climate to change over the next 12 months (the survey includes about 35 executives of the online gambling industry, among them many CEOs of key operators).

Mobile makes currently averages 29% of total revenue

For more than three years now the online gambling industry has declared the mobile channel its key growth driver. However, although the mobile business is becoming more and more important, operators do not (yet) have consistent reporting standards (KPIs) regarding their mobile revenues. In regard to comparable benchmarks two KPIs are currently usable:

  • Mobile total revenue
  • Mobile in % of total revenue - On average, the operators analysed generate 29% of their total online revenue via mobile channels (Q2 / H1 2014 figures).

 

Winners and losers in the future - Ladbrokes and Betfair seem to be on a good track again

The online gambling industry is no longer a sure-fire success with every market player getting a fair share of the market. As mentioned above, times continue to be tough, and the market will see "winners" and "losers".

According to the experts MECN surveyed, Bet365 and Paddy Power will likely be among the "winners" and will be able to grow their market shares the most in the next 12 months.

Among the companies with the largest improvements in regard to the experts' expectations of the future market shares were Ladbrokes and Betfair (see exhibit 1 - comparison of March and September data). Both companiesare currently undergoing major restructuring but on the whole, industry experts seem to believe in the success of these improvements and expect market shares to grow in the next 12 months.
