Maltco Lotteries: The Journey So Far

MALTA (June 10, 2015) -- Maltco Lotteries: One of the largest and most respected companies on the island. The Maltese and Gozitans alike recognise the achievements and improvements Maltco Lotteries have brought to the country, and this is why it has earned national respect, not only for the advanced achievements in this industry, but also for what it has brought to the customer; variety, security, reliability.

Before 2004 Maltco Lotteries was unheard of. Nobody knew of it. No one recognised this company. It literally started out of nothing. Maltco Lotteries had neither a location from where to operate, and much less staff to run it.

All it had was the drive. Maltco Lotteries was full of energy and enthusiasm to innovatively break through the Maltese market after decades of the Lotto and Lottery being ran by the Maltese government. This operation was no joke. It was not an easy drive anyone could achieve. First the company, needed to win the confidence of the public.

Everyone agrees that Maltco Lotteries is one of the largest and most established companies on the Maltese islands today. Not only due to the vast number of outlets spread in every town and village, but also due to the heavy technology it invested in.

Maltco's retail network is the largest online terrestrial network that exists in Malta owned by one organisation.

Maltco's network currently consists of around 250 retail outlet spread across the Maltese islands all connected online to Maltco's systems. This means that once a player requests a ticket, the agent will input the ticket request on the system which is instantaneously recorded in Maltco's Central Systems real-time as the ticket is printed.

Back in 2004, Maltco selected GO as the preferred service provider to connect Maltco's prospective agency network. The choice was based on GO's expanded outreach network, flexibility of service, and the company's commitment to continue investing in Malta's infrastructure.

In July 2004, Maltco Lotteries took over and started the operation with just 2 games; Lotto and Super 5. Between 2004 and 2014 Maltco increased its portfolio by another 8 games; U*BET Sports Betting, Quick Keno, U*BET ATG HorseRacing, Bingo 75, U*BET GBI HorseRacing, Grand Lottery, Fast Bingo and U*BET PAA HorseRacing.

In order to be able to support the above enhanced portfolio, the bandwidth upgraded to 8Mbps for each retailer, rather than the prior 64kbps.

In 2013, after the award of a second 10-year concession and licence, the then legacy Network (based on ATM) was migrated to MetroEthernet. This was a major project for both GO and Maltco involving substantial reinvestment.

This allowed: the upgrade of all agency equipment which was replaced with the latest cutting edge equipment and the deployment of Intralot's Horizon platform which is an integrated, interactive multimedia platform allowing the dissemination of online information, display of draw presentations at the agencies, display of LIVE Horse races.

The reason behind this success is the professionalism in the way the company operated throughout the years, from the its dedicated staff to the highly committed agents and their respective employees.

Maltco Lotteries is very proud of its impeccable achievement by abiding blindly to all the laws and regulations set by the Maltese constitution, the MGA Regulations, and also by the European and International Lottery Standards and Regulations.

Maltco Lotteries is a company of substance, just as much as it is a company that has made a substantial and noticeable difference in the Maltese Lotto industry. This is repeatedly stated even by foreigners involved in the gaming industry who visit Malta, they all seem to have words of praise and show their respect for what Maltco Lotteries has managed to do in Malta. These experts not only praise the company's operation, but also they are intrigued to adapt certain operational skills to their own companies abroad. Maltco Lotteries feels proud, not only for its own merits, but also for putting Malta and the Maltese amongst the top Lottery companies in the world.

Lotteries Worldwide Enjoy Robust First Quarter Growth; Sales Up by 8% Quarter-on-Quarter

WLA Quarterly Lottery Sales Indicator

BASEL, Switzerland (June 9, 2015) -- Lotteries worldwide enjoyed a sunny start to 2015, with all five regions of the globe reporting results firmly in positive territory. Overall, first-quarter on first-quarter sales increasing by 8% globally, with the Asia Pacific and the Latin American markets once again acting as the engines of growth.

The Latin American region performed most strongly over the opening quarter of 2015, continuing on with its good form from the second half of 2014. Participating Latin American lotteries reporting an aggregate first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 14.7%, slowing down from an aggregate fourth-quarter on fourth-quarter increase in sales of 24.3%.

Growth in Latin America was yet again driven by Argentina's Lotería Nacional Sociedad del Estado, which oversaw a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 23.1%. In contrast, sales at Brazil's Caixa Econômica Federal fell over the same period, while Mexico's Lotería National para la Asistencia Pública held steady.

Following hot on the heels of the Latin American region was the Asia Pacific market, where participating Asia Pacific lotteries reported an aggregate first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 14.3%.

Continuing a now familiar theme, growth in the Asia Pacific region was again driven by the China Sports Lottery and the China Welfare Lottery. The China Sports Lottery saw its sales increase by 31.5% over the first three months of 2015, as against the corresponding period of 2014, while the China Welfare Lottery saw its sales increase by 9% over the same timeframe. Across China, first-quarter on first-quarter sales of Lotto, Guess Lottery (sports betting), and VLT products were up by 10.9%, 95.2%, and 24.1% respectively. Growth was concentrated in the Shandong, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Heilongjiang provinces; the province of Heilongjiang, for instance, reported 58.9% growth compared to a year earlier.

Elsewhere in the Asia Pacific region, lotteries had a quieter quarter, with sales at Australia's Lotterywest, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and Japan's Takara-kuji lottery all either up slightly or essentially treading water.

In Africa, participating African lotteries recorded an aggregate first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 6.5%. Continuing on with its strong performance over recent months, Ghana's National Lottery Authority saw its sales increase by 42.9% quarter-on-quarter. Lotteries in Morocco also enjoyed healthy growth, with La Marocaine des Jeux reporting a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 11.9%, and Loterie Nationale reporting a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 8.3%. In contrast, sales at the Mauritius National Lottery declined sharply over the same timeframe. Sales for the first quarter of 2015 were lower than those of the prior quarter due to lower aggregate jackpots of MUR 222 million being advertised for the quarter compared to MUR 355 million for the prior period; the prior quarter had seen a record jackpot of MUR 80 million. Moreover, the lottery was unable to execute its Quick Win (instant) games launch plan for 2015 as the Mauritian Gambling Regulatory Authority did not approve any new games; this adversely affected the sales of Quick Win games in the first quarter. Elsewhere in Africa, sales at South Africa's Gidani rose, with the South African National Lottery overseeing a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 4.6%.

Also registering a robust performance, given the maturity of the markets there, was the North American region, where participating North American lotteries posted an aggregate first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 4.7%. The results of the North American market were even more impressive given that they were set against the backdrop of a contracting U.S. economy, which witnessed a fall in real GDP of 0.7% in Q1 2015, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis second estimate. Previously, real GDP in the U.S. had grown at the rate of 2.2% in the fourth quarter of 2014. Once again, the standout performer in the North American region was the California Lottery, which recorded a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 12.4%.

Also performing strongly were the Minnesota State Lottery, which reported a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 10.1%, and the Connecticut Lottery Corporation, which saw its first-quarter on first-quarter sales rise by 7.5%. All other participating U.S. lotteries also recorded results in positive territory. This contrasted with the situation with respect to the participating Canadian lotteries, which either saw their sales decline or hold steady.

Despite the improving European economy - Eurostat reported that seasonally adjusted GDP rose over Q1 2015 by 0.4% across both the euro area (EA18 countries) and the EU28 countries - the picture for lotteries in Europe in the first quarter of 2015 was more nuanced. Central European lotteries, including the Czech Republic's SAZKA a.s., Poland's Totalizator Sportowy, and Hungary's Szerencsejáték Zrt., all fared best, reporting first-quarter on first-quarter increases in sales of 25.4%, 24.9%, and 18.5% respectively. The increase in sales as SAZKA a.s. was due in large measure to the sales of the Eurojackpot block game, which was introduced at SAZKA a.s. in the fourth quarter of 2014.

The Czech Republic lottery also experienced slight sales increases in its flagship Sportka lotto game and in sales of instants, while Internet sports betting sales also rose 35% quarter-on-quarter. At Hungary's Szerencsejáték Zrt., the increase in sales was attributable in part to the upsurge in sales occasioned by a large jackpot on 5/90 lotto (Ötöslottó); moreover, this surge in sales pulled up the performance of other secondary lotto games as well. Meanwhile, sales at Greece's OPAP continued to strengthen, with first-quarter on first-quarter revenues growing by 15.8% on the back of core games resilience and contributions from the Hellenic Lotteries. This marked the seventh consecutive quarter of growth in sales at OPAP, defying the continuing economic turmoil in Greece. Also in the black was France's Française des Jeux, where sales were up by 6.4% first-quarter on first-quarter. Offsetting the positive results of many European jurisdictions, however, was the performance of Europe's largest lottery, Lottomatica, where sales dipped for the period January-March 2015, as against the period January-March 2014; this had the effect of pulling results for Europe down as a whole. Sales as Sweden's Svenska spell also eased slightly over the same timeframe.

The WLA will continue to track the progress of global lottery sales in future editions of the WLA QLSI. Once again we thank all WLA member lotteries participating in this initiative, and look forward to bringing you the second quarter 2015 results shortly.

Camelot UK Lotteries Awarded the Community Mark, Recognising Its Excellence in Community Investment

  • Business in the Community's CommunityMark is the UK's national standard for excellence in community investment.
  • Only 36 companies currently hold this sought-after standard.
  • Camelot joins a group of leading businesses who collectively invested over £2.06 billion in UK communities in 2014.

LONDON, U.K. (June 4, 2015) -- Camelot has been recognised with a CommunityMark, the UK's national standard for leadership and excellence in community investment, run by Business in the Community, HRH The Prince of Wales's responsible business network.

CommunityMark recognises businesses that are leading the way in supporting local communities. The sought-after standard is given to companies who put community at the heart of their business. CommunityMark holders prioritise the most pressing issues in their communities, and make a measurable difference across different areas of responsible business: from helping disadvantaged people into employment and supporting social enterprises to compete for business, to building long-term partnerships with schools.

The CommunityMark is difficult to achieve, the rigorous assessment process is designed so that only the best companies get it. Camelot joins an exclusive network of 36 businesses who have collectively invested over £2.06 billion in their communities in 2014 and are engaging one in three employees in community programmes.

Camelot has been awarded the CommunityMark for its work in identifying key social issues that are most relevant to the business and to the communities in which it operates - working in partnership with a range of stakeholders, as well as leveraging combined knowledge and expertise for mutual benefit.

The company also demonstrated that it goes above and beyond regulatory requirements in responsible gaming and has some interesting programmes around young people and students, with significant days allocated to employee volunteering.

Camelot will be presented with the CommunityMark at Business in the Community's National Gala Dinner, supported by the 2014 Responsible Business of the Year National Grid, on 7 July 2015.

Matt Godfrey, Head of Consumer Strategy & Innovation, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded the CommunityMark. As operator of The National Lottery, we deliver over £34 million each week to Good Causes the length and breadth of the UK. We also create, on average, 20 millionaires a month. However, it is hugely important to us that we also have a life-changing impact on the communities in which we live and work - so we are immensely proud to be one of the 36 companies recognised for our commitment in this area."

Commenting, Stephen Howard, Business in the Community's Chief Executive, said: "I congratulate Camelot for joining the exclusive network of CommunityMark companies today. Business has a vital role to help create vibrant and prosperous communities. CommunityMark holders are at the heart of this movement, demonstrating an impressive commitment to identifying and responding to social needs. Crucially, these companies understand that excellence in community investment not only has a positive and valuable impact on society, but also creates real business benefits. We hope their example will inspire many more businesses to put responsible behaviour at the heart of how they do business."

Gaming Laboratories International Continues to Grow Its Presence in Asia Pacific Region

SYDNEY, Australia (June 9, 2015) -- Gaming Laboratories International (GLI®) recently completed a very successful showing at G2E Asia, where the company presented its testing and certification services for land-based, lottery and iGaming, in addition to its many services beyond testing

Those services have driven a burst of growth for the company throughout the Asia Pacific region, where GLI has three labs in Australia and one in Macau. With the combination of locations and recent growth, GLI is now the largest service provider of its kind in the region.

GLI Australia COO Espee de Robillard said, "Our multiple locations in the Asia Pacific region give us many advantages over our competitors that enable us to better serve our customers. For example, three Macau-based engineers are relocating to Australia for cross-training and specialized training as we look to expand our reach and further meet customer needs."

Meeting customer needs has resulted in GLI growing its laboratory capacity. GLI Australia physically expanded one of its Australia locations this year, growing from 1,000 square meters to 1,600 square meters in Adelaide, and plans are in development for growth in the Sydney location. Across the business, GLI Australia has increased staffing levels to accommodate continually increasing demand, adding 21 new staff members so far this year.

"At GLI, we are very customer-focused. One of many things that separates GLI from competitors is we actively listen to customer needs and respond in many creative ways to increase levels of customer service. It's that very focused team effort, dedication to our clients' needs and a good deal of hard work that has helped us to become the leading lab in Asia Pacific," de Robillard said.

GLI serves more than 475 global jurisdictions, more than 130 of which exclusively accept GLI certification letters.

American Gaming Association and the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers Announce Partnership to Combat Illegal Gambling in Texas

Gaming industry invites Texas elected officials, law enforcement to join effort to fight illegal gambling

WASHINGTON D.C. (June 3, 2015) -- The American Gaming Association (AGA) and the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM) today announced a new partnership to highlight and combat the rapid spread of illegal gambling machine activity in Texas. With an estimated 100,000-150,000 “8-liner” and illegal slot machines now present in Texas, the state has become the most glaring example of widespread illegal gambling activity in the United States.

Over the last several months, AGA has been shining a spotlight on the vast, dangerous illegal gambling operations running rampant across the country, and few places exemplify the thriving nature of illegal gambling better than Texas, where hundreds of thousands of black market machines are currently in operation,” said Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the AGA. “By partnering with AGEM and building off of the already strong support of law enforcement officials at every level, we will make real progress in shutting down illegal operators.

AGEM represents the most respected licensed and regulated gaming suppliers in the world, and we no longer can remain silent about the current environment of widespread illegal gambling in Texas,” said Thomas Jingoli, AGEM President and Chief Compliance Officer for Konami Gaming. “On behalf of our 140-plus member companies who supply gaming equipment and technology to regulated markets around the world, we are asking for law enforcement in Texas, from the highest levels in Austin to the smallest communities, to enforce the state’s existing laws that forbid the kind of uncontrolled activity that continues to spread.”

Among those issuing statements in support of the AGA-AGEM effort are State Representative Allen Fletcher, R-Tomball; Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst, R-Brenham; and Representative John Kuempel, R-Seguin. Read quotes of support from Texas legislators here.

In a letter to elected officials and law enforcement in Texas, AGA and AGEM are inviting them to join this initiative and to take action. Among the recipients are: Texas’ congressional delegation; Governor Greg Abbott; Attorney General Ken Paxton; and state legislative leaders. Read the letter here.

Since launching “Stop Illegal Gambling - Play it Safe” last month, the AGA has worked hand in hand with law enforcement, attorneys general and other agencies to expose illegal gambling. While “8-liner” machines are not technically illegal in Texas, payouts by law must be limited to $5 in non-cash prizes. Game rooms in most cases are clearly not following the law, creating a statewide environment of illegal gambling activity that has spread rapidly over the past few years.

According to a recent New York Times article and local media reports, illegal gambling activity is taking place in various locations such as windowless former tire shops and tractor-trailers parked along busy roadways. In some cases, illegal slot machines brought in from other states are mixed with the “8-liners” in an attempt to expand the illegal gambling activity. The current “8-liner” landscape is a breeding ground of criminal activity, including robberies, assault, money laundering, tax evasion and organized crime.

Pollard Banknote Continues Legacy of Printing Innovative Big Instant Games

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, (June 11, 2015) -- Pollard Banknote Limited (TSX: PBL) ("Pollard Banknote") is proud to celebrate its long-standing tradition of printing the most large format instant games for lotteries worldwide. For over 15 years Pollard Banknote has led the industry in the quantity of large format games produced, and in 2014 alone, the company printed over 20 big games (larger than 48 square inches in area), a tally that doesn't include specialty products like the PlayBook®, advent calendars, or pouched games.

In 1999, Pollard Banknote printed the industry's first large format instant game-called Millennium-for a charitable non-profit organization in Sweden.

Always looking for ways to innovate, this ticket was also the first two-sided scratch-off game ever produced-again, by Pollard Banknote. Measuring a massive 12" wide x 8" high, the 50 kr (approx. $5 USD) ticket marked an auspicious beginning to the company's position as the industry's leading large format ticket printer.

"Pollard Banknote is very excited to highlight the popularity of our large format tickets-just one of our many innovative product options that demonstrate our leadership in the industry," said Jennifer Westbury, Executive Vice President, Sales & Customer Development, Pollard Banknote. "We have led the industry by printing large format tickets that add more play areas, more value for players, and more options for lotteries to keep the PlayBook® dispensers that house large format tickets stocked year-round. Simply put-we have the most experience creating and printing the most stunning big tickets on the market today."

Sales consistently show that oversized tickets make a big impact at retail, demonstrated by the recent sales achievements of the Minnesota State Lottery's Big Cash Crossword ticket and the New York Lottery's Winner Wonderland holiday game, both printed by Pollard Banknote.

The Minnesota State Lottery launched its Big Cash Crossword game measuring a sizable 7.8" wide x 8" high. This super-sized ticket's front and back real estate was packed with features that included six crossword grids, doubler and tripler features, a redeemable coupon and extra big time chances to win! The coupon drove players back to retail, with a validation barcode that, when redeemed, offered a free Progressive Print-N-Play® crossword game. The game generated over $6.6 million (USD) in total sales, making it the top-selling game sold out of retailers' PlayBook® dispensers. It also drove coupon redemption rates to over 90% and made a big impression on the judges at the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL) in 2013-named Finalist for the Best New Instant Game of the Year!

NASPL2015

The mega-sized holiday-themed ticket at 8" by 8", Winner Wonderland, was a huge success for the New York Lottery last year. The game exceeded expectations by selling out in only five weeks. Players and retailers were excited to see such a unique large format game, and with the follow-up release of its Lucky 7s Playbook, the Lottery was able to sustain the excitement and popularity of large format games. The big tickets added interest at retail, kept the larger dispenser stocked, and increased total ticket facings at over 17,000 retailers in New York.

Another way to sustain interest in large format tickets is Pollard Banknote's newest innovation, the Multi-Pack™-yet another industry-leading product that will keep large dispensers stocked by offering players massive amounts of play in a large format. Presented as one giant ticket (measuring 8" wide x 8" long, or more), the game can be designed at a variety of price points. Each individual game can also be detached-every game within the big ticket contains its own barcode for validation, allowing players to redeem each game separately.
