Divided by Oceans: Connected by Opportunity

Tatts Lotteries Hosts the 2015 APLA / WLA Seminar

GOLD COAST, Australia (April 27, 2015) – The 2015 APLA / WLA Seminar hosted by Tatts Lotteries, commenced with the opening dinner held in the grounds of the Sheraton Mirage Resort and Spa on the Gold Coast Queensland Australia.

Delegates were accommodated at the 5-star Sheraton Mirage, a resort deserving of its reputation as one of the most luxurious and welcoming destinations on the Gold Coast.

The Seminar registration was at capacity, with approx. 123 delegates representing some 44 organizations from 19 countries in attendance.

This year even saw delegates from Morocco, which was a first, as well as people travelling from as far afield as Greece, Belgium, France, China and the UK.

The Theme for this year's Regional Conference is: Divided by Oceans: Connected by Opportunity.

The topics under this theme are very appropriate to lotteries in the Asia region and beyond.

Sue Van Der Merwe, Chief Operating Officer for Tatts Lotteries captured the essence of the chosen theme by outlining that although Oceans physically divide people across the world, the opportunity to connect, engage and build relationships has never been stronger thanks to the innovation and technology through traditional and remote channels.

As we capitalize on new technologies, our Lotteries and Vendors are able to engage and build on the traditional player base, with the aim to deliver greater returns for the good causes and communities that Lotteries serve.

The Opening Dinner was held on Monday April 27, and graced by the finest weather the Gold Coast could provide.

In the Morning, Delegates were treated to a Golf Tour that commenced with the rising sun. Transport was arranged to deliver ‘Golf Lovers’ to the award winning greens of Glades Golf Club at Robina.

The 72 par course was designed by Golfing Legend Greg Norman, and provided visually stunning surrounds.

As Delegates were then free to explore and experience the resort facilities and Gold Coast surrounds throughout the day, the Sheraton Mirage got to work in preparation for the exceptional presentation of the opening dinner which commenced with pre dinner drinks at 6pm.

The surroundings were breathtaking and it was clear that Tatts Lotteries had selected an outstanding venue to engage delegates, with the ocean backdrop and sounds of the surf combined with the scent of Hibiscus and a warm, still night.

As the night progressed, the party was treated to a magic show under the stars, with a duo from the gold coast entertaining guests with card tricks and a floating table that was truly mind boggling.

The night was sponsored by GTECH, INTRALOT, Scientific Games, Pollard and Jumbo Interactive, with additional support from JUMBO in supplying WiFi and technical support.

Guests enjoyed a sumptuous buffet of Australian Cuisine, fine wines and delectable deserts.

Delegates all gave feedback to Lottery Insider that the opportunity to connect and network was welcomed, with all unanimous in praising the night as spectacular.

Check out the other photos from the opening dinner.

Camelot Sets New National Lottery Sales Record

Best-ever performance driven by resurgent Lotto, thriving Instants and accelerating digital growth

UNITED KINGDOM (April 27, 2015) - -Camelot UK Lotteries Limited (‘Camelot’) today announced record UK National Lottery ticket sales of £7,277 million for the 2014/15 financial year, an increase of £546 million on the previous year. Over the same period, National Lottery Good Causes and players shared a record-breaking £5,712 million – underlining how, 20 years after its launch, The National Lottery is continuing to transform the lives of individuals and communities across the UK.

In the year to 31 March 2015, Camelot raised £1,796 million (excluding investment returns) – more than £34 million each and every week – for the Good Causes, taking the total delivered to date to over £33 billion. National Lottery funding has now enabled more than 450,000 awards to be made across the UK – an average of 144 grants for every postcode district in the UK.

Over the same period, Camelot awarded £4,043 million in prize money to players – taking the total paid out to date to over £55 billion and the total number of lottery millionaires to more than 3,800.

Camelot’s outstanding performance over the year was driven by strong sales of its resurgent flagship Lotto game, which, following its successful re-launch in October 2013 after a decade of decline, has now enjoyed two years of consecutive growth. Camelot also succeeded in growing sales of instant play games to an all-time high of £2,628 million, an increase of £487 million on the previous year. This was driven by the launch of over 70 innovative new Scratchcards and online Instant Win games, higher prize payouts and the completion of the company’s roll-out of around 10,000 standalone terminals to satisfy untapped demand for National Lottery Scratchcards.

The work carried out by Camelot to transform its digital services has also seen sales flourish. The company’s successful launch of a major new online and mobile platform in September has revolutionised the way players interact with National Lottery games across all devices, with sales through smartphones and tablets soaring by over 60% on the corresponding period last year and now accounting for over a third of all interactive sales.

Andy Duncan, Chief Executive of Camelot UK Lotteries Limited, said: “The National Lottery is all about changing lives – for the hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries of lottery funding and for all of the winners we create. Having raised almost £1.8 billion for National Lottery projects and awarded over £4 billion in prize money to our players during the year, we’re delivering on that promise.

Our success will continue to be driven by our focus on digital transformation, innovation, and offering our players an enhanced game portfolio and even greater convenience. We want to build on this year’s record-breaking performance, and deliver even more for winners and society in the years to come.

Note: Total ticket sales and all related financial results figures for 2014/15 are subject to final audit.

Oregon Lottery Celebrates 30 Years of Doing Good Things

SALEM, Oregon (April 24, 2015) - Thirty years ago, the Oregon Lottery launched ticket sales with its first-ever game, the Pot of Gold Scratch-it. Now after offering hundreds of new games, creating thousands of winners and providing billions of dollars to state programs, the Oregon Lottery is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

The Lottery’s 30th anniversary is an occasion for looking back over three decades of incredible growth and change,” said Oregon Lottery Director Jack Roberts.

JUMBO

As we look ahead, we must remain alert to opportunities to change and grow with consumer attitudes and preferences just as we’ve done the past 30 years.

Oregon voters established the Oregon Lottery in 1984 and the Lottery sold its first game April 25, 1985.

Initially, 100 percent of Lottery proceeds were used to support economic development and job creation in Oregon. In 1995, voters directed that a portion of the Lottery dollars also be used to help fund Oregon public schools.

Most recently, Oregon voters amended the state constitution to direct 15 percent of Lottery funds for natural resources with 7.5 percent going to state parks and 7.5 percent going to watershed conservation and salmon habitat. In 1992, the Legislature began directing 1 percent of Lottery proceeds to fund problem gambling treatment.

During the Lottery’s first three decades, over $9 billion in Lottery proceeds have helped fund state programs:

  • Economic development – over $2 billion (since 1985)
  • Public education – over $5 billion (since 1995)
  • State parks and watershed enhancements – over $500 million each (since 1999)
  • Problem and responsible gambling treatment and education – over $70 million (since 1992)
  • Additionally, since 1985 Oregon Lottery players have won over $28 billion in prizes.

To celebrate this milestone in its history, the Oregon Lottery will be hosting an open house at the Lottery’s Salem office from 2-3 p.m. on Monday, April 27.

We know how important vision is for punters, so this is a big win for our customers to be able to be watching the Sky coverage, whilst remaining in the app and reviewing the form or placing bets,” Mr Fletton said.

But UBET isn’t turning to the online world at the expense of bricks and mortar. It recently opened Australia’s first UBET store at New Farm in Brisbane, commencing a multi-million dollar investment in its 1,200 outlet-strong retail network, with the next store to roll out in

Tasmania followed by Adelaide.

The new retail concept represents the TAB of the future – a vastly different look and feel with cutting–edge video wall technology, sound canopies, stadium-style seating and new betting terminals.

In an Australian first, the inclusion of UBET Live, a digital, in-play sports betting solution will allow punters to bet through a customised app on an in-store tablet device.

The new retail concept will be rolled out across all outlets over three to four years in Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Northern Territory.

Attorney General Lynch Invited to Join New Initiative to Crack Down on Illegal Gambling Operations

In letter, American Gaming Association CEO Geoff Freeman invites new AG to join “Stop Illegal Gambling – Play it Safe” initiative

Washington, D.C. (April 23, 2015) -- Now that the United States Senate has confirmed Loretta Lynch as the next U.S. attorney general, the American Gaming Associations (AGA) is inviting her to join state attorneys general and other top law enforcement officials in partnership with the gaming industry through its recently launched initiative to crack down on illegal gambling operations.

In a keynote address before attorneys general from across the country last week, AGA President and CEO Geoff Freeman announced the “Stop Illegal Gambling – Play it Safe” initiative to combat illegal gambling operations across the country that harm consumers, steal jobs and deprive state and local governments of revenues that pay for vital public services.

The legal, highly regulated, $240 billion casino gaming industry invites Attorney General Lynch to join us in exposing illegal gambling through our new initiative that is bringing together law enforcement officials to strengthen communities in every state,” said AGA President and CEO Geoff Freeman. “AG Lynch has demonstrated a strong track record on this issue and a keen understanding of the serious problem illegal gambling has become across the country, and we hope to work with her to combat shady operators who don’t protect consumers, don’t create jobs and don’t contribute a dime in taxes in support of their communities.

A partnership with AG Lynch could include prioritizing illegal gambling, dedicating more resources for enforcement, training, and awareness efforts, and ensuring all relevant components of the Department in Washington and throughout the country are plugged into the AGA initiative.

During the confirmation process, Lynch said she “would welcome the opportunity to work with Congress to address this issue” of illegal gambling. She also highlighted her efforts to crack down on illegal gambling as US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, where her office brought prosecutions for such activities. Lynch pointed to a 2011 case that her office led, which she described as “the largest ever nationally coordinated organized crime takedown against organized crime in the United States.

According to Lynch, “Twelve indictments were unsealed in Brooklyn against eighty-five individual defendants, including charges against members of all five New York-based La Cosa Nostra families. Those charges included charges for illegal gambling, including illegal sports betting and operation of illegal card games and illegal gambling devices.

In January, as the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee began nomination hearings for Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch, AGA sent a letter to Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman, and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), ranking member, to ensure the next attorney general would focus on illegal gambling activities that are prevalent across the United States.

The “Stop Illegal Gambling – Play it Safe” initiative seeks to distinguish the highly regulated, $240 billion legal gaming industry—which supports 1.7 million jobs and generates $38 billion in taxes across 40 states—from the criminal networks that rely on illegal gambling to fund violent crimes and drug and human trafficking. The initiative focuses on four key areas of illegal gambling: illegal sports betting; black market machines; Internet sweepstakes cafes; and illegal online betting.

About AGA:

The American Gaming Association is the premier national trade group representing the $240 billion U.S. casino industry, which supports 1.7 million jobs in 40 states.  AGA members include commercial and tribal casino operators, suppliers and other entities affiliated with the gaming industry.  It is the mission of the AGA to be the single most effective champion of the industry, relentlessly protecting against harmful and often misinformed public policies, and paving a pathway for growth, innovation and reinvestment.
