Because of the growing popularity of fantasy sports and increasing consumer demand for greater transparency in how the games operate, Gaming Laboratories International (GLI®), the global leader in online systems and iGaming testing, has issued a White Paper on Fantasy Sports, highlighting the benefits of having fantasy sports sites properly tested and certified by GLI. Independent testing of fantasy sports sites provides consumers with greater confidence in the service and allows operators to establish credibility and maintain player loyalty.

FSTA research also states that 48 percent of players (the highest response of eight categories), chose the website to play because they trusted the site.

"The exponential growth in fantasy sports players, combined with the fact that players choose their sites to play primarily because they trust the site, clearly speaks to the need for these sites to be properly tested," said GLI President/CEO James Maida.

Lottery Corporation Contribute $1.25 billion to British Columbia

RICHMOND, B.C. Canada (July 16, 2015) -- BCLC posted a record net income of $1.25 billion to government in 2014/15, which helps support communities, health care and education. This is the ninth straight year BCLC has been able to deliver more than $1 billion to the province of B.C.

The growth in net income is primarily due to higher than budgeted revenue in the high-limit tables category, and lower than budgeted costs due to ongoing cost management, lower staff costs resulting from a higher vacancy rate than budgeted, and a one-time amortization adjustment.

In 2014/15, BCLC demonstrated its focus on innovation in distribution and in product development, modernizing the business by replacing legacy technology and systems, encouraging responsible gambling, and creating entertaining experiences for players.

Highlights of the 2014/15 year include:

  • Costco locations across B.C. began selling scratch and win tickets for the first time anywhere in North America.
  • B.C’s first live venue sports betting pilot was launched at Starlight Casino, with the opening of the Sportsbook.
  • Extended Encore Rewards to table game players was also launched, allowing members to earn Encore Dollars redeemable for food and beverage at casino restaurants.
  • The gaming management system (GMS) was fully completed and has been installed in all 36 gaming facilities across the province.
  • New Horizons Conference in Vancouver - BCLC hosted its third annual highly successful Responsible Gambling conference where industry representatives and international experts discussed ideas on responsible gambling.
  • Investment in gambling research - BCLC invested $2 million over five years to the Centre for Gambling Research at UBC.
  • BCLC’s facility distribution strategy is nearing completion with 90 percent of B.C. adults living within a 30-minute drive from a casino or community gaming facility.

While gambling continues to be a popular form of entertainment in B.C., people have many choices for how to spend their entertainment dollars. BCLC aims to stay relevant and create entertaining experiences for players, in a safe and responsible manner.

De Lotto Respond to News of Scratch Card Sales

NETHERLANDS (July 19, 2015) -- The Lotto has, as sole license holder in the Netherlands been given the opportunity to sell scratch cards, the government has granted this license to De Lotto on the condition that those games are organized responsibly.

That is, gambling, fraud and crime should be prevented and that consumers should be protected against this. The integrity of De Lotto is of paramount importance.

The Lotto will ensure that the products of The Lotto will not be sold to players under 18. To make this enforced, all areas of sale of Lotto in all its manifestations display a consumer recognizable logo 18+.

In addition, retailers are informed and resources, tips and ideas provided in order to sell products in a responsible manner.

We advise retailers to deal with consideration with players who want to buy many Scratchcards at once. We monitor sales at stores daily and we use a transaction limit for Scratch 50 euros. This is to prevent risks such as gambling or, if that is played with cash, money derived from criminal activity (money laundering).

So there is a relatively long time between commitment (buy a Scratch card) and price benefit. This can reduce the risk of gambling addiction. In addition, there have been several studies in the past that show that a Scratch Ticket addiction in the Netherlands is a rare phenomenon.

Macao Gaming Show 2015 Unveil Ambitious Subsidy Scheme to Draw Visitors

MACAO, SAR (July 17, 2015) -- The Macao Gaming Show (MGS) has unveiled the most ambitious and wide-ranging package of travel subsidies and grants for visitors attending this year's exhibition at the Venetian Macao, November 17-19 2015.

Easy to apply for the subsidy

The subsidy can also be claimed by qualified visitors before the show through presentation of boarding passes and other documents to the MGS offices.

Support Initiatives

The full range of support initiatives are detailed on the MGA website, and a dedicated 'Helpdesk' has been established at the Macao Gaming Show offices to assist visitors with the programme. The advice includes how to complete the subsidy forms, what information to keep and forward, how to apply and an explanation of the criteria.

Marina Wong, Event Director and General Manager at MGS, said: "This year's subsidy scheme for Qualified Buyers has been designed to help buyers from all over the world come to Macau and explore all the business opportunities available both in Macau and throughout Asia. The show is expanding into exciting new areas with gaming sitting at the heart of a tourism, culture and entertainment exhibition that is simply a one-stop show for Asia.

"We want to make sure that every visit is not just financially sound, but also logistically easier, which is why we're opening a helpdesk style of support and information from our offices. With grants immediately available as visitors arrive, and advice on hand throughout the process, we think the Qualified Buyers Scheme is a major asset to the show."

Last year, Macao Gaming Show drew a record number of international visitors to the expo - 12,000 drawn from 20 countries - and this year, MGS is looking to build on this growth with a more far-reaching subsidy programme for qualified buyers coming to the industry's premier exhibition and conference, regardless of the size of their organisation or geographical base.

Fatima Maria Nunes, Secretary of trade association MGEMA, which owns the Macao Gaming Show, added: "We are working closely with the biggest names in Asian gaming, the major hotel and casino operators, the support and service industries from the region and the Macau SAR Government - all of us determined to bring a broader perspective to the show and the region. These are exciting times for the whole industry, and our challenge is to bring gaming innovation, cultural exchange and business growth all together into one show: MGS. The visitor subsidies are a crucial part of that campaign."

Lottery Issue Statement Following Verdict in Hot Lotto® Trial

CLIVE, Iowa (July 20, 2015) -- Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich released the following statement Monday following announcement of the jury's verdict in the Polk County District Court trial involving the Hot Lotto case:

"There is no doubt this has been a fascinating case. We respect the court's work and the jury's verdict. The facts in this case have enabled us to further enhance our layers of security to protect the integrity of lottery games, and that ultimately has been a positive

This case is an important reminder that lotteries have to keep monitoring and making improvements to stay ahead of those who would try to beat the system. As a society, we may never be able to stop people from trying to commit crime, but we need to have strong procedures in place to catch and prevent them when they do.

I have confidence that the games we offer today are fair. Our lottery has strong layers of security to protect lottery players, lottery games and lottery prizes. Those procedures enabled us to seek information about the winning ticket in this case and not pay the prize until basic questions could be answered - and they never were.

There was no prize paid in this instance. The money from this jackpot, which totaled nearly $10.8 million in cash, was returned to the lotteries in the Hot Lotto game in proportion to the sales from each jurisdiction. The Iowa Lottery received about $1.4 million back and gave the money away in a special summer promotion called 'Mystery Millionaire' back in 2012. Fifteen players ended up winning prizes in that promotion.

The details in this case are important for anyone who has ever played a lottery game, the good causes benefitted by lotteries, and the billions of dollars at stake. There obviously were indications that something was amiss with this particular prize claim. This case has provided our lottery with an opportunity to better pinpoint potential security risks and update our procedures to protect against them."

Additional History and Background

In December 2010, a man bought a Hot Lotto ticket at a convenience store on Des Moines' north side. That ticket went on to win the multi-million-dollar jackpot on the line in the Hot Lotto drawing on Dec. 29 of that year. For nearly a year, the prize went unclaimed.

Then, with less than two hours to go before the prize would have expired on Dec. 29, 2011, the winning ticket was presented by lawyers on behalf of a New York investment trust that had been established to benefit a corporation in the country of Belize.

Neither the two lawyers who presented the ticket nor anyone associated with Hexham Investments Trust of Bedford, N.Y., would provide the basic details necessary to verify that the ticket had been legally purchased, legally possessed and legally presented. Those involved said they could not identify the jackpot winner or the man who purchased the winning ticket.

That standard information is routinely requested from jackpot winners in Iowa as part of the lottery's security processes to comply with both state law and lottery game rules. Such details are usually received within minutes of the time a winning ticket is presented.

On Jan. 26, 2012, Crawford Shaw, a New York attorney who identified himself as the trustee of Hexham Investments Trust, withdrew the claim to the jackpot. The Iowa Lottery requested that the Iowa Attorney General's Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation open a criminal investigation into the matter.

What Is Hot Lotto?

Hot Lotto got its start in April 2002 and has jackpots that start at $1 million. Today, the game is offered in Iowa, 13 other states and the District of Columbia. In May 2013 the game's jackpot became an all-cash prize paid in a lump-sum amount with all state and federal withholding taxes paid for the winner. Players in Hot Lotto choose five balls from a pool of 47 and another number, called the Hot Ball®, from a separate pool of 19. Plays cost $1, and Hot Lotto drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (July 20, 2015) -- Posting record sales for the 11th consecutive year, the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation today announced its sales and proceeds figures for Fiscal Year 2015. The Lottery reported $1.475 Billion in total sales for the period from July 1, 2014, through June 30, 2015, an increase of $58.7 Million, or 4.1 percent, over last year’s previous sales record of $1.417 Billion. Joint EL/WLA Security Seminar – "Secure, Monitor, React... or pay the price"

Seminar in cooperation with the European Lottery Association, 27 – 29 October 2015, Stockholm, Sweden

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (July 21, 2015) -- "Cybercrime is a growing threat for businesses but many businesses are under-prepared for it. A third of them (companies in the Annual Kroll Global Fraud Report 2013/14) say they don't currently invest in IT security and while companies that are planning to increase investment are focusing on technology, they are neglecting elements such as staff screening and due diligence on partners, clients and vendors. These processes are key to mitigating the insider threat, which often can't be detected by anti-fraud technology or physical security."

The perennial problem with Security is that the measures taken to prevent any breach of security or fraud are frequently regarded as excessive or overly expensive until they are breached.

From physical security to cybersecurity, the 2015 joint EL/WLA Security Seminar to be held in Stockholm in October 2015 will address potential weaknesses in lottery systems, procedures and processes ranging across the design and security of scratch cards, the testing of complex systems, the resilience of increasingly complex communications systems, electronic "lottery tickets" and the security or lack of security of non-physical (e.g. RNG) draws.

As systems become more "intelligent", the ingenuity of those wishing to subvert those systems will also grow – posing much more sophisticated threats to lottery systems. Management must accept their responsibility to understand the risks and either allocate proportionate resources and budgets ... or pay the price.

Come to Stockholm in October to hear presentations from external security professionals, experts from the lottery supplier companies and, most importantly, from your lottery colleagues - security professionals with years of practical and relevant experience.

Who should attend?

  • Security directors and senior managers
  • Risk managers
  • Audit managers
  • Managers responsible for IT operations and strategic planning.

The seminar will start on Tuesday, 27 October 2015 with a welcome dinner at 20:00 and end on Thursday, 29 October around 16:00.

Meeting venue and accommodation: Scandic Hotel, Grand Central Kungsgatan 70 SE - 111 22 Stockholm, web:

Transfers will not be organized.

The seminar and sessions will be conducted in English only.
