New National Campaign Puts Focus on 'The Five White Balls and The Powerball

Ads Will Feature Drawing Balls With Words Instead Of Numbers

URBANDALE, Iowa (August 31, 2015) -- A national advertising campaign for Powerball® is about to debut that will give a new look to a highly recognizable but utilitarian part of the game: the six balls used in its twice-weekly drawings.

Rather than displaying numbers as they normally do, the five white balls and one red ball will feature words spelling out fun messages in the new ads.

The idea behind the campaign is to allow messaging that can vary from state to state but still produce familiar visuals across the country.

"Our goal was to have a more consistent look across the nation for Powerball," said Paula Harper Bethea, Executive Director of the South Carolina Education Lottery and lead project

member of the Marketing and Promotions Committee at the Multi-State Lottery Association.

"But the real beauty of this work is that it's fully customizable for all lotteries to their individual messages. Graphically, we can look the same, but the message can adapt to an individual state's preferences."

After a request for proposals was issued in fall 2014, the MUSL Marketing and Promotions Committee chose the St. John & Partners agency of Jacksonville, Fla., to develop a full complement of television, radio, out-of-home, digital and key messaging. The campaign will begin with the updated version of the Powerball game that debuts in October and is designed to have staying power for the next 48 months.

Gary Grief, Executive Director of the Texas Lottery and national chair of the Powerball Game Group, said he appreciates the campaign's contemporary approach.

"The polished, modern and fun look of the advertising campaign capitalizes on the strength of the Powerball brand and positions us as we launch the newest version of the game," he said.

Some of the six-word messages that may be emblazoned on the drawing balls in the campaign include:

  • Someone's Gonna Win Why Not You?
  • No Better Time To Start Playing
  • $40 Million Reasons To Start Playing
  • There's A First Time For Everything

The objectives of the campaign include establishing more urgency for all jackpot levels while invigorating the brand; creating a stronger emotional relationship to the brand; inspiring new players; increasing the frequency of play; and encouraging earlier, entry-level play.

New Lottery Scratchers™ and New Initiatives Continue to Help Scratcher Sales Increase

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (September 1, 2015) -- Today marks another Super Tuesday Scratcher™ launch for the New Mexico Lottery. Included in the line-up are $1 Double Doubler, $2 Triple Tripler, $3 $25,000 Treasure Hunt and $5 Crossword 10X. Top prizes range from $4,000 to $50,000.

The television spot, animated by the Lottery's in-house animator Andrew Dormody, features a giant treasure ship made out of gold Lottery coins and sails made of Scratcher tickets.

Returning with cameo appearances are skeletons from the Dia de los Muertos TV spot and a "cash shark" from the June Super Tuesday TV spot. See the spot at on the TV page:

Retiree Wins $3.25 Million on a Non-Winning Scratchers® Ticket!

SACRAMENTO, California (August 28, 2015) -- Carol Craver is a loyal lottery player and has been ever since the California Lottery first began selling tickets 30 years ago. In fact, she remembers voting “yes” on Proposition 37 in 1984, which was the ballot initiative that helped launch the Lottery.

She is also a loyal 2nd Chance player. Craver says she enters the numbers of some of her non-winning games, takes a break, then enters some more. This strategy has finally paid off for her big time! That’s because Craver’s $5 California Lucky Life ticket was drawn to win the end-of-game’s top prize, which in this case is $2,500 a week for 25 years – or a whopping $3.25 million!

I’ve always been lucky, but nothing like this!” Craver explained. “I won $1,000 in May, so when I got the email from the Lottery I got excited. When I realized what I won, I fell to my knees and began to pray. It’s amazing!

Craver plans to save most of her prize, invest, maybe head to Las Vegas or take a dream trip to Alaska. “But I won’t fly so it’ll have to be on a cruise ship,” she added.

You too can enter any non-winning ticket into the Lottery’s 2nd Chance Program for a chance to win up to $25,000. Players enter those non-winning Scratchers tickets on our website and are automatically entered into the weekly pool drawing. A total of $100,000 will be given away every week.

And, to commemorate our 30th Anniversary, we’re giving players two more ways to win $30,000 with either Scratchers or SuperLotto Plus®! From August 24 until October 24, players who submit any non-winning Scratchers ticket code with the 30th Anniversary logo or any eligible SuperLotto Plus code ticket code into 2nd Chance will be eligible to win $30,000! (This will be in addition to the standard 2nd Chance weekly draws!)

Florida Lottery Ranked Second in the Nation For Efficiency

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (August 28, 2015) -- The Florida Lottery announced today that the LaFleur's 2015 World Lottery Almanac, an internationally recognized lottery industry publication, has ranked it the second most efficiently operated lottery in the country with administrative expenses of just 2.8 percent behind Massachusetts with operating expenses of two percent. For comparison, lotteries similar in size such as the New York and California Lotteries have operating expenses of 15 percent and 5.6 percent respectively.

The Florida Lottery's success can be attributed to its effective implementation of an entrepreneurial business model that focuses on the development of new revenue streams and creates a win-win partnership with its private-sector partners.

The Lottery constantly evaluates its operating expenses, a practice that has resulted in the department maximizing profits while having one of the lowest expense rates among all domestic lotteries.

Lottery contributions to education have made a significant impact with more than $1 billion being transferred annually to the EETF for the past thirteen consecutive fiscal years, representing approximately six percent of the state's total education budget.

"The Florida Lottery remains committed to operating as efficiently and effectively as possible on behalf of all Floridians and we will continue to implement cost-saving measures and increase business efficiencies wherever possible," said Florida Lottery Secretary Cynthia O'Connell.

The Florida Lottery is responsible for contributing more than $28 billion to education and sending more than 700,000 students to college through the Bright Futures Scholarship Program.

The Florida Lottery reinvests nearly 98 percent of its revenue back into Florida's economy through prize payouts, commissions to more than 13,000 Florida retailers and transfers to education.

Club Keno Doubler Days Give Players a Chance to Double Their Prizes

LANSING, Michigan (August 31, 2015) -- Club Keno players will have a chance to double their prizes in September during the Michigan Lottery’s Doubler Days.

A “Doubler” message will be printed on random Club Keno tickets from Tuesday through Sept. 30. That “Doubler” message means all Club Keno and Kicker prizes won on that ticket will be doubled.

If a player purchases a ticket for multiple draws and it has a “Doubler” message, all the prizes won in all drawings on that ticket are doubled.

The Doubler Days promotion is free for players. Tickets must be valid Club Keno winners to be eligible for double winnings.

A “Doubler” message alone does not denote a win. The Jack prizes are not eligible for the Doubler Days promotion. Prizes will be doubled up to a limit of $4 million per drawing.

One of the Lottery’s most popular games, Club Keno gives players 37 different ways to play and win.

Players select up to 10 numbers to match from one to 80, with prize amounts determined based on the amount the player wagered.

Club Keno may be played at Lottery retailers across the state. Drawings are every three and a half minutes. Results and live drawings may be found online at:

Hong Kong Jockey Club Announce Record HK$3.87 Billion in Charity Donations and HK$25 Billion Total Return to the Community

HONG KONG (September 2, 2015) -- At the Annual General Meeting of The Hong Kong Jockey Club today (1 September), Voting Members elected one new Steward and re-elected four Stewards to the Board.

The new Steward, Mr Silas Yang Siu Shun, JP, was elected to a one-year term to fill the vacancy left by Dr Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai, GBM, GBS, JP, who retired from the Board for the reason that she will soon reach the age of 70. Dr Fan served on the Board for seven years.

At the same time Stewards Mr Anthony W K Chow, SBS, JP; Dr Christopher Cheng Wai Chee, GBS, JP; Mr Michael T H Lee, JP; and The Hon Sir C K Chow, GBS, JP were re-elected to serve further terms of three years each.

Following the Meeting, the new Board of Stewards re-elected Dr Simon S O Ip, CBE, JP as Chairman and Mr Anthony W K Chow, SBS, JP as Deputy Chairman for 2015/16.

Mr Silas Yang, JP, (biography attached) is a keen racing enthusiast, and is currently a co-owner of Rich Tapestry and Fun Tapestry. Last year the former won the Santa Anita Sprint Championship, becoming not only the first Hong Kong horse to win in the United States, but also the first to win an International Grade 1 race there. Mr Yang recently retired from the position of Asia Pacific Chairman and Executive Chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) China and Hong Kong. He is active in the community and is a Vice Patron of the Community Chest.

Earlier Dr Ip, reviewing the highlights of last year (financial year ending 30 June 2015, racing season ending 12 July 2015), said it had been a truly memorable year, not least because it was the Club’s 130th Anniversary. Dr Ip noted that the territory-wide programmes under the theme of “Riding High Together for a Better Future” had enabled the Club to reach out to the community and to share its core values of excellence, integrity and philanthropy.

Business-wise, the Club enjoyed another record year, with total turnover for the financial year growing by 10% to HK$191.44 billion (HK$193.95 billion, up 12.7% for full racing season). Payments to Government in taxes and to the Lottery Fund for the financial year recorded an all-time high of HK$21.22 billion (HK$21.52 billion for full racing season). The Club’s net margin and commission was HK$10.47 billion (HK$10.57 billion for full racing season).

The Club’s Charity donations achieved a new record of HK$3.87 billion, the second year in a row that the Club has exceeded the HK$3 billion mark. Adding together betting and lottery duties, profits tax, contributions to the Lotteries Fund and charitable donations, the Club's total direct return to the community reached a remarkable HK$25.09 billion in 2014/15, up 2.9% on 2013/14 (HK$25.40 billion, up 5.2% for full racing season).

Dr Ip noted that last year’s impressive donations were almost double the HK$1.95 billion the Club donated as recently as 2012/13. While stressing that the Club’s commitment to supporting the broad range of community needs remains as strong as ever, Dr Ip revealed that the Club is adopting a new approach towards its charitable work.

This involves a transition from the Club’s traditional role as a provider of charitable funding to others, to becoming a proactive and transformative philanthropist in its own right; seeking out the root causes of social issues, and then working in partnership with Government and the community to resolve them,” he explained.

The first result of this new philanthropic role is the Club’s decision to place a special emphasis on three specific areas of community need. “These are firstly to address the needs of our young people by helping them identify and achieve their full potential; secondly to help build Hong Kong into an age-friendly city – a most pressing need given the rapid growth of our elderly population; and thirdly to improve the health, well-being and positive outlook of all sectors of society by encouraging more people to take part in sport,” he said.

These needs are being addressed under the headings of Youth for Innovation, Elderly for Care and Sports for Hope, with initiatives currently in progress in all three areas; notably CLAP for Youth @ JC, a HK$500 million career and life planning programme that is expected to benefit 200,000 young people over its five year duration.

La Fleurs 2015 Lottery Abstract

Dr. Ip welcomed the recently announced Club donation of approximately HK$120 million to support the Hong Kong Football Association’s five-year football development programme, which will promote football at all levels in the community. He looked forward to the future development of Hong Kong’s first purpose-built football training centre in Tseung Kwan O, supported by a Club total donation of HK$133 million, which will be available for training by elite teams as well as for community use. He also hailed the upcoming completion of the Club’s project to restore and revitalise Central Police Station, a heritage jewel that will become a ‘must see’ and ‘must do’ for Hong Kong citizens and international visitors alike.

Dr Ip emphasised that all of the Club’s achievements have been hard won. “Our horses would not have accomplished so much without the commitment, entered into many years ago, to build the Club into a world-class racing organisation. Nor would we have been able to grow our tax contribution, or charity donations, without a sustained focus on our customers and a very considerable investment in technology and infrastructure. As the very positive response to our 130th Anniversary celebrations makes clear, Hong Kong people fully appreciate this.”

Operational Performance Summary is available Here.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club

Founded in 1884, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is a world-class horse racing operator and Hong Kong’s largest community benefactor, as well as one of Asia’s most prestigious membership clubs. The Club is also one of Hong Kong’s largest employers with over 24,000 full-time and part-time staff. Committed to global excellence and giving back to society, the Club is always “riding high together for a better future” with the people of Hong Kong.
