IGT Introduces Aurora, Its New, Comprehensive Solution for Lottery Growth

logo

LONDON, U.K. (October 13, 2015) -- Ending months of anticipation, International Game Technology PLC (IGT) (NYSE: IGT) will unveil its new high-performance, high-reliability lottery solution, Aurora, at the NASPL 2015 trade show in Dallas, Texas, on Oct. 13.

"It's the dawn of a new era," announced Marco Tasso, Senior Vice President, Global Product Marketing, Lottery, IGT.

Aurora builds on the success of IGT's Enterprise Series system – the most prevalent central system and back-office application solution for lotteries in the world – to respond to rapidly changing market conditions and lotteries' needs for more agility, greater interoperability, and a truly omnichannel experience. The Aurora suite of smart, open solutions was designed to define the environment for current and future lottery growth in terms of a technological platform.

From the ground up, Aurora's architecture is loosely coupled, providing an entirely new level of system integration and flexibility to seamlessly integrate to third-party applications or games. This Service Oriented Architecture will separate Aurora's game engines from the business logic, so making changes to a game will not affect the business end, allowing lotteries to get solutions into production faster. Aurora also offers lotteries more agility when executing on key business decisions, and sound, actionable analytics to help them make those decisions. Aurora's advanced business intelligence portfolio allows data to be integrated, mined, and visualized, ultimately helping to drive results for the lottery.

By rearchitecting its solution, IGT's Aurora allows lotteries to seamlessly connect all the different channels in which they operate and enables them to know their players, communicate with them, and give them value wherever and whenever they play. Aurora extends down to the point of sale, where a new framework provides increased flexibility to deploy applications across a full suite of terminals and devices.

Other benefits include a brand-new, browser- and device-independent back-office Web User Interface (UI). The UI is role-based, so that starting with the data visualizations users see on the initial portal, and continuing to the specific tasks they see to do their job, the UI will look different to different classes of lottery users.

With Aurora's end-to-end interoperability, Matthew Whalen, IGT's Senior Vice President and Global Chief Technology Officer, Lottery, explains, "Existing customers of IGT legacy systems, including Enterprise Series, can incrementally add key components to reap significant benefits without completely overhauling their current lottery solution."

For IGT, it is all about supporting the path to innovation. "Aurora offers flexibility within a dynamic system, but the core focus is the player," said Tasso. "It delivers the solutions that lotteries need to increase their customer base and revenues to good causes."

Smartplay Reassures Customers and Players of Game Integrity, Security

EDGEWATER PARK, New Jersey (October 12, 2015) -- In light of recent developments in the fraud case of a former employee for the Multi-State Lottery Association alleged to have manipulated lottery drawings, Smartplay International wants to reassure our customers, players and the industry at large that our Origin® System has no relation to this case.

origin
The Smartplay Origin® System

The Smartplay Origin® System uses a multi-tiered approach to security and is protected from the type of manipulation alleged to have occurred within the Iowa, Wisconsin and Colorado drawings. The security of our system has been independently vetted by numerous testing and security authorities.

Paramount to our product is the separation of duties referred to by Iowa Lottery CEO and North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL) President Terry Rich last week in his public remarks. Smartplay has no direct connection to any one lottery, testing authority or ticket selling technology provider.

Our independence provides lotteries and their players the assurance of the necessary segregation of duties that is the cornerstone of drawing security.

There is a trend in the North American lottery industry to cut costs whenever possible. This has led to a wave of consolidation of duties whereby lotteries are either out-sourcing their drawings, developing their own RNG systems, having their online ticket vendor conduct draws or reducing or eliminating independent audit.

Like any other industry, this has opened up the occasional opportunity for unscrupulous people to act. Smartplay supports MUSL’s efforts as they investigate this issue while we proudly continue to provide our products to lotteries worldwide.

Smartplay

Established in 1993, Smartplay is dedicated to the creative design, development and manufacture of lottery drawing equipment.

The product line has evolved over the years in response to clients’ needs by incorporating the latest technology.

Smartplay has thereby maintained a position as international leader in the area of lottery drawing machines and customized game show equipment. Smartplay is consistently chosen above other manufacturers due to a reputation for quality and reliability.

Smartplay is proud to be the choice of the world’s most prestigious lotteries.

"Looking Beyond One's Own Nose" at the Sixth NOVOMATIC Responsible Gaming Symposium

logo

VIENNA / GUMPOLDSKIRCHEN, Austria (October 13, 2015) --NOVOMATIC Group's sixth consecutive Responsible Gaming Symposium was staged at Novomatic Forum in Vienna on the 13th of October 2015. This year, guests were once again given an overview of the significant international scientific findings from the world of addiction prevention research. Apart from Prof. Donatella Marazziti from the University of Pisa, we also managed to enlist speakers such as Laura DaSilva from Great Britain as well as NOVOMATIC experts from Germany and Italy.

The now traditional Responsible Gaming Symposium fully focused on "looking beyond one's own nose" by having renowned speakers from all over Europe present their latest scientific findings to an interested audience of NOVOMATIC prevention experts as well as representatives from authorities and addiction prevention facilities.

Following the exciting and challenging key lecture by Prof. Marazziti, Laura DaSilva went to the heart of the matter: "Responsible gaming is not only more than obligation we must take seriously and a responsible task for the gambling industry. Responsible gaming can be fun, too."

In this sense, responsible gaming should also – and predominantly – be seen as a service to customers providing them with relaxing entertainment in a secure environment. It should therefore be our goal to select the right strategy to meet these requirements.

Dr. Monika Poeckh-Racek, the Head of Corporate CSR at NOVOMATIC, endorsed this initiative and highlighted the efforts by NOVOMATIC and its operative subsidiaries to this effect.

The meeting's internal and external participants agreed that they have profited significantly from an event boasting such highly respected speakers and practical research questions.

European Commission Funds Betting Industry-Backed Player Education Project

BRUSSELS, Belgium (October 9, 2015) -- The joint EU Athletes and regulated betting sector’s pioneering player betting integrity education programme has received a huge boost in funding from the European Commission. The five-year-old programme has received  €488,305, ensuring that it continues for another 2 years, kicking off in January 2016 until the end of 2017.

EU Athletes programme is backed by the private betting sector trade bodies, the RGA, EGBA and ESSA, which between them will also commit additional funding on top of what has already been committed by the European Commission.

Jean-François Reymond, General Secretary of EU Athletes, welcomed the European Commission’s decision, stating: “This is the second allocation of significant funding by the Commission to this project. It’s a recognition of the success of our partnership with the betting sector. It will allow us to improve our education tool set, enhance our outreach programme directly to players and also increase the visibility of the #PROtectIntegrity campaign. Players associations are in the front line to preserve the integrity of sporting competitions in Europe.

EU Athletes will now set about developing and implementing a range of new and existing tools to communicate its 5 key concepts: know the rules; don’t bet on your sport; be careful with inside information; fixing any part of a match is a serious offence; and report anything suspicious. Clive Hawkswood, Chief Executive of the RGA added: “Continued cooperation between the European Commission, betting operators and athletes associations is vital to safeguarding the integrity of sports in Europe. We are therefore delighted that funding of the betting integrity education programme for a further two years is to be provided jointly by the Commission and by representatives of the licensed betting industry.

Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of the EGBA said: "The EU athletes programme ensures young athletes are educated on the risks of match fixing. Karma Gaming Announce Fantasy Sports for Lottery

Retail lottery gives birth to Fantasy Sports

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Canada (October 8, 2015) – Karma Gaming is excited to announce the launch of FrontRow - the world’s first mobile Fantasy Sports product built for every lottery. And because games are purchased and redeemed at retail, online gambling legislation is not required.

The Fantasy Sports industry is exploding around the world right now and lotteries don’t want to find themselves in the same position they did when online poker took off,” said Adam Caughill, Director, New Business Development from Ontario Lottery, “We need a seat at the table fast.

Classified Advertisement

Customers purchase FrontRow tickets from their local lottery retailer. They scan the code on the ticket using their FrontRow app, and can pick from a variety of sports and games. Once the customer picks their contest, they then select their favourite teams, and the app automatically assigns a roster based on their choices.  When the big game starts, customers can follow the progress on their mobile device in real time. If the customer wins, they take their ticket back into retail to redeem their winnings.

FrontRow is designed for lotteries to capitalize on a huge gap in Fantasy Sports currently,” said Jay Aird, co-founder and CIO with Karma Gaming. “The game is designed for the casual sports fan, not the sharks. Simply pick your favourite teams and receive players to cheer for based on your selections. And because rosters are assigned automatically, all customers have the same odds of winning, not just the sharks. No extensive research required, no friction, just fun.

FrontRow offers lotteries an exciting opportunity to incorporate deeper customer learning into the retail channel for the first time,” said Paul LeBlanc, co-founder and CEO with Karma Gaming. “Lotteries will benefit from the FrontRow analytics dashboard which provides real-time sales updates, engagement rates as well as additional insights.

For lotteries already online, FrontRow can also be extended for online purchase and redemption.

Linq3 and NCR Bring Lottery to the Fuel Pump

Companies to demonstrate unified technology at 2015 NACS Show

ATLANTA, Georgia (October 09, 2015)--To enable C-store retailers to reach more lottery players in the forecourt, Linq3, creator of Play at the Pump technology, and NCR, global leader of consumer transaction technologies, worked together to make lottery play available at the fuel pump for participating NCR retailers.

According to a NACS study, more than 73 percent of petroleum purchasers do not enter the convenience store. By integrating with Linq3’s fuel-pump lottery technology, NCR aims to help its retailers expand their reach and engage with Linq3 to enter this untapped market with a convenient way to play quick pick draw games at the forecourt.

Linq3’s technology integrates with existing NCR RPOS solutions,” said Jason Groff, NCR Director of Petroleum and Convenience. “So this represents a new, innovative, and low-risk way for us to help our retailers provide their consumers an extra measure of convenience while giving retailers additional opportunity to drive revenue.”

Taking convenience to another level, consumers who play at the pump using Linq3’s solution, receive a text message with the numbers played and receive win notifications on to their mobile phone. For winnings valued under $600, Linq3 provides an automatic redemption feature that is credited to the card used for purchase. Additionally, Linq3’s features such as play limits and age verification help ensure responsible play.

NCR has a long history of innovation that improves consumer experience while driving retailer revenue. We’ve combined that with Linq3’s proven ability to help lotteries reach more consumers through a very convenient purchase point readily available,” said Daniel Cage, Linq3 CEO.

NCR will be showcasing Play at the Pump in booth 5126 at the 2015 NACS Show in Las Vegas, Oct. 11-14.

It’s engaging. It’s just plain more fun.

Lazlo offers players an easy and interactive way to use their mobile phones to select lottery games and draws, before completing their purchase in-store; at their convenience. Once the transaction is confirmed by the retailer’s system, the Lazlo app will download a digital ticket(s) to the player’s phone. The mobile image is the ticket – completely eliminating the need for printed tickets.

Lazlo tickets contain multiple layers of security, including highly encrypted wager and PIN information embedded in the customizable, high-definition imagery. Players remain anonymous and retains the bearer nature of a paper ticket, without the need to register or tie a debit card or bank account to their purchase.

It’s an existential change to the industry. Once a player buys a Lazlo ticket they will never buy a paper ticket for that game again. Period,” added Chris Demetree, CEO of Lazlo. “We’re not talking about just another option; we’re talking about a complete replacement of paper.

Supporting Retailer Needs

Retailers have always been at the heart of the lottery and will remain so far into the future. While the Lazlo play experience must be finalized in-store through a clerk or kiosk, there is no additional strain to store personnel or resources. Lazlo requires no counter footprint, no advanced clerk training, and is easily integrable to seamlessly coexist with any legacy system. There is no learning curve to use Lazlo.

Driving Marketing with Unlimited Branding Potential

Lazlo allows lotteries to offer customizable, high-def player experiences per game. Because the mobile image is the ticket, Lazlo provides marketers with unlimited branding and design potential. The digital tickets can be coded to look like existing paper lottery tickets, branded with a specific campaign or a partner logo and message. Retailers also can include relevant discounts and offers to drive customer revisit.

Discover Lazlo at NASPL 2015

NASPL show attendees are encouraged to download the Lazlo app and discover it first hand by playing the in-app show branded raffle. Shoutz® and Abacus Solutions International Enter Partnership Designed to Help North American Lotteries Increase POS and Profits From Ticket Sales

AUSTIN, Texas and Odiham, United Kingdom (October 13, 2015) -- Shoutz Inc., and Abacus Solutions International today announced a partnership to increase lottery points-of-sale and create new promotional opportunities, with the goal of significantly and inexpensively increasing clients’ profits from lottery ticket sales.

Abacus is a United Kingdom-based technology provider for lotteries. The company’s electronic point of sale platform, Fusion™, empowers multi-lane retailers like grocery stores, drug stores and big box retailers to sell lottery tickets from existing cash registers, without modification. This secure system simplifies management while opening access to considerably more customer traffic than found in traditional lottery retail environments.

Shoutz’s Front Flip™ mobile application and proprietary lottery incentive programs help drive customers through retail front doors, then turn them into loyal players. Shoutz will integrate Front Flip’s instant-win and “gifting” functionalities with Abacus’ Fusion platform to help promote lottery games and consumer brands, and to build customer loyalty.

Players purchasing tickets through Abacus’ system will see QR codes printed on their tickets, which they can scan using Front Flip to enter mobile-based promotions. These promotions will let lotteries reward ticket purchase behavior, promote new games and encourage brand loyalty. Additionally, Front Flip rewards integrated with promotions sponsored by consumer brands will encourage sales and generate incremental traffic for lottery retailers.

Lottery retailers using this system will be where bricks meet clicks,” said Abacus CEO Simon Butler. “Abacus systems make better use of existing infrastructure to significantly increase points-of-sale at little cost. Coupled with their mobile app and the actionable data Shoutz collects, these systems will help our shared clients market smarter and sell more.

Shoutz is committed to adding value to customer experiences, and in this case retailers, lottery players and lotteries win,” said Shoutz COO Frank Rash.

Together, Shoutz and Abacus have the ability to double the number of retail points-of-sale for lotteries. Our systems make lottery play easier and more fun, and by incorporating promotional strategies developed with other consumer brands, reward players and generate incremental sales for both lotteries and retailers,” Rash

Front Flip was named 2015 Best Marketing App by the American Business Association. Front Flip has been used to promote sales and build loyalty for consumer brands like McDonald’s, Bud Light, KFC and more.

Abacus’ Fusion system is currently used by Dutch lottery operator De Lotto to seamlessly introduce lottery games to multiple parts of the shopping experience. Abacus also simplifies retail transactions for large multi-lane and smaller retailers using their Fusion Platform.

Bailey & Glasser File Class Action Against DraftKings

BOSTON, Massachusetts (October 13, 2015) -- DraftKings, the fantasy sports behemoth whose ads are everywhere this football season, offers new participants a match of their initial deposit when they first sign up to DraftKings' website.  DraftKings' recruits new players with a promise that those who sign up "today" will receive an exclusive, limited-time 100% deposit match. In a class action lawsuit filed today in federal court in Boston, a Massachusetts man claims that DraftKings' deposit matching promises are themselves a fantasy.

For example, DraftKings represents that when a new player deposits $600 in a DraftKings account, the promised deposit match of an additional $600 "will already be available to you." DraftKings' internet videos promise that when a new player signs up, he (participants are overwhelmingly male) will "automatically get" the additional matching deposit. But John Roddy and Elizabeth Ryan, the Bailey & Glasser lawyers who filed the suit, said that a new player who deposits $600 expecting to have $1,200 immediately "available to him" learns only after the fact that the "deposit match" is illusory.

Schafer Systems Inc.

The only way to actually get the "free" deposit match is to pay thousands more in entry fees to play contests, to earn points that are converted to dollars very, very slowly. A player depositing $600 would have to pay at least $15,000 in entry fees to realize the promised $600 deposit match. And DraftKings' requires the new player to spend that additional $15,000 within four months of putting down that first $600.

The suit alleges that, "as designed, DraftKings' promise of a deposit match that will 'already be available to you' upon registration as a new Player is a blatant deception, and its undisclosed condition requiring players to spend 25 times their initial deposit within four months to realize the 100% match DraftKings' promised makes it virtually impossible for the Player to realize upon that promise."

The Boston office of Bailey & Glasser is handling the suit, which seeks to hold DraftKings to its promise, that is, immediately matching the deposits placed by new players when they are first recruited by DraftKings. The suit is called Wicksman v DraftKings, Inc., and is pending in the US District Court, District of Massachusetts, Civil Docket Number 1:15-cv-13559.

Founded by Ben Bailey and Brian Glasser in 1999 in Charleston, West Virginia, Bailey & Glasser LLP has grown to include 50 lawyers, with offices in eight states and D.C. The firm's complex litigation practice focuses on high-stakes commercial litigation; class actions for consumers, insureds, investors, and retirement plan participants; catastrophic injury and defective product cases; antitrust; and whistleblower lawsuits.  The firm has extensive experience in energy law, and litigates energy cases in trial courts, bankruptcy courts, regulatory agencies, and appellate courts. It has a major corporate practice, and handles business matters ranging from assisting Chinese investors in acquiring US assets, to IPOs, to the negotiation and execution of billions of dollars in commercial transactions.

ESSA Detects 18 Cases of Suspicious Betting in Q3

BRUSSELS, Belgium (October 13, 2015) – Eighteen cases of suspicious betting patterns were detected in the third quarter of 2015 by the sports betting integrity association, ESSA, which represents many of the world’s largest regulated betting operators. Whilst these figures represents a slight fall from those detected by ESSA in Q1 (24 cases) and Q2 (23 cases), it highlights the continuing threat to sport, consumers and betting operators from fraud linked to the manipulation of sporting events.

ESSA’s members raised a total of 73 alerts between 1 July through to 30 September 2015. After detailed examination, 18 were found to be suspicious and reported to the relevant regulatory body for further investigation. Tennis again constituted the highest number of alerts (72%) reflecting a trend identified in Q1 and Q2.

The figures show an on-going need to continue to monitor integrity issues within the sports sector. Whilst we work closely with a number of committed and effective sports and regulatory bodies, there remains the need to see sports governance move up the political agenda. The recently agreed UK Action Plan shows how all stakeholders can work together with a common aim.” stated ESSA Chairman, Mike O’Kane.

Such issues will be the focus of the discussion around match-fixing and sporting integrity that will take place at ESSA’s betting integrity event in the European Parliament on 14 October. ESSA will use that event to spell out the association’s vision of how best to protect sport and betting markets from match-fixing, and to strengthen working in partnership with other stakeholders.

The event will be hosted by UK MEP Dan Dalton, with speakers including Professor Ben Van Rompuy of the ASSER Institute, along with representatives from the British Gambling Commission, player associations and sports governing bodies. Szabolcs Horvath, a Member of EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Tibor Navracsics’ Cabinet, will close the event.

Commissioner Navracsics has provided an article on the European Commission’s efforts to address match-fixing in ESSA’s Q3 report, along with a piece from Jean-François Reymond, General Secretary of EU Athletes, on player education. The Q3 report and articles can be accessed here, as can the Q1 and Q2 integrity reports. ESSA’s betting integrity event programme can be accessed here.

About ESSA:

ESSA is a key player in the fight against betting related match-fixing and represents the regulated betting sector at national and international match-fixing policy forums, holding positions on working groups at the European Commission, Council of Europe and the International Olympic Committee.

Australian Football Clubs Sign Up To Promote Responsible Gambling

MELBOURNE, Victoria (October 2015) -- Six Victorian AFL clubs have pledged to protect young people from the risks of gambling by signing a charter at the MCG today.

Minister for Gaming and Liquor Regulation Jane Garrett congratulated the clubs, including 2015 Premiers Hawthorn, who signed up at the launch of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (12-18 October).

The Western Bulldogs, St Kilda and Essendon committed to the charter for the first time, joining Collingwood, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and the A-League’s Melbourne Victory soccer club.

As part of the charter, clubs will keep gambling away from its social and fundraising activities with young people. They agree not to provide gambling inducements for awards and prizes and to promote responsible gambling to players, members and visitors.

The clubs also pledged not to make sponsorship deals with sports betting agencies which would see them promoting gambling to young people under 18.

Where participating clubs own or operate poker machines, they also commit to promoting the Gambler’s Help venue support program and help services.

During the AFL season, an average of 300,000 fans turn out each weekend to watch a game and more than a million people follow these clubs on social media.

Sports betting companies have spent $149 million on advertising so far this year, up by $44.5 million from the same time last year, with the biggest increase in digital advertising.

The charter is part of the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation’s Gambling’s not a Game program, which encourages sporting clubs to educate members, officials and fans about the risks of gambling.

Responsible Gambling Awareness Week runs from October 12-18 with events being held throughout the state.  Go to rgaw.com.au for more information.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation Jane Garrett

The Andrews Labor Government is committed to reducing gambling related harm in our community.

This charter will help to reduce the exposure of young people to gambling through sports and better educate fans, players and members about the risks of gambling.

Quotes attributable to Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation CEO Serge Sardo

The charter is the centrepiece of our Gambling’s not a Game program, which encourages sporting clubs to educate members, officials and fans about the risks of gambling and to promote responsible gambling.

This is not an anti-gambling message. It’s a commitment to minimising the exposure of gambling advertising and gambling culture on young people.
