Lottery Names Companies to Handle Gaming Contracts

logo

RALEIGH, North Carolina (January 6, 2016) -- The N.C. Education Lottery Commission on Wednesday approved new contracts for a new gaming system and instant ticket services that will allow the lottery to continue to grow by offering the latest technology in the lottery industry to those who enjoy lottery games.

Thanks to a fair, thorough and competitive procurement process, we got a good deal that should allow us to keep our costs low and produce the best results for North Carolina and education,” said Alice Garland, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery.

The costs of new contracts would be $26.5 million, a savings of $6.3 million, if applied to estimates of sales for fiscal year 2017. If the current contracts applied to the same time period, the cost would be $32.8 million.

The nine-member commission reviewed and unanimously approved two recommendations for award of the contracts. International Game Technology (IGT) of Providence, Rhode Island was awarded the gaming system contract and Scientific Games of Alpharetta, Ga. was awarded the instant ticket and related services contract. The awards are subject to additional negotiations between the lottery and the apparent successful vendors and the review and approval of the State Attorney General’s Office.

The contracts are the largest that the lottery has with private vendors. The procurement process began in April 2014 and Request for Proposals (RFPs) were received in August and September of 2015. Two internal lottery teams evaluated the proposals with the final recommendations made to the commission by the executive director today.

The new contracts are scheduled to begin April 1, 2017 as the current contracts expire. The length of the gaming system contract is 10 years, but it is possible for the vendor to gain a five-year extension if upgrades and improvements to the gaming system are made by the 8th year. The length of the instant ticket printing contract is eight years with the possibility of a two-year extension.

As with most lotteries, the compensation for the services are determined as a percentage of overall lottery ticket sales. The gaming systems contract will provide IGT a compensation rate of 1.15% of instant ticket sales and 0.360% for draw game sales. Scientific Games will receive 0.669% of instant ticket sales for its work in the printing, storage and distribution of instant tickets.

We’re excited about the prospects of getting new technology to support our games and ticket sales,” said Garland. “This will allow us to work more effectively and efficiently with retailers, provide more engaging games for players, and continue our record of raising additional dollars each year for the good cause we serve.”

The first half of the Georgia Lottery’s fiscal year spanned from July 1, 2015, to December 31, 2015.

First-half transfers to the Lottery for Education Account will bring the total raised for educational programs in the state to more than $17 billion since the lottery’s inception.

All of our business decisions are made with a keen focus on our mission, which is to maximize revenues for HOPE and Pre-K,” Georgia Lottery President and CEO Debbie D. Alford said.

A Record Lottery Jackpot Year on the Prairies

logo

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Canada (January 5, 2016) -- More western lottery players than ever before will look back on 2015 as a year of extraordinary good luck. A record 76 lottery prizes of $1 million and more were claimed on tickets sold within Western Canada Lottery Corporation’s region in the year just ended. And those 76 winning tickets were worth an amazing $281 million.

The previous record for most wins was set in 2014, when 58 prizes of a million dollars or more were claimed in the prairies and the north. The previous record for the total value of million-dollar prizes was set in 2010, with a total of $265 million.

All three of the prairie provinces also set their own new records for the number of million-dollar lottery prizes in a calendar year.

JUMBO

Alberta saw 49, while Saskatchewan saw 15, and Manitoba, 10. And with two million-dollar prizes paid in a single year, Yukon brought its lifetime total to four. Yukon residents previously claimed million-dollar prizes in 2005 and 2013.

Winners of the 76 prizes came from 37 separate communities. With the largest concentrations of players, major cities saw the greatest proportion of million-dollar winners.

Calgary and Edmonton had 11 and 15 respectively; Regina saw 2 and Saskatoon had 3; and Winnipeg weighed in with 7.

But showing that winning the lottery is a matter of luck that can strike anywhere, several of the million-dollar winners were from small towns and villages. Five were from communities with populations less than 1,000. These included Marsh Lake, Yukon; Midale and Ponteix, Saskatchewan; Beiseker and Fort Kent, Alberta.

In fact, one of the largest jackpots in the region was won by a resident of the smallest community on the list. A $50 million LOTTO MAX jackpot was won in Fort Kent, Alberta – a hamlet with a population of about 200.

By population, one of the luckiest communities in 2015 may have been Kindersley, Saskatchewan.

The town of about 5,000 people made the millionaire’s list twice. In March and April, two Kindersley residents claimed WESTERN MAX prizes of $1 million.

Along with the seven prizes claimed by Winnipeggers, residents of Selkirk and Elphinstone also became lottery millionaires in 2015. And a Kenora, Ontario resident won $1 million when she bought a SCRATCH ’N WIN ticket in Winnipeg.

Thirty of the million-dollar wins across the region came from LOTTO MAX tickets, and 22 were from Canada’s other national lottery game, LOTTO 6/49.

The regional WESTERN 649 and WESTERN MAX games accounted for 7 and 8 wins. Nine $1 million SCRATCH’N WIN prizes rounded out the list.

As players check and double-check lottery tickets they may have purchased or received as gifts over the holidays, the beginning of 2016 could be the start of another record-setting year in the west.

Lottery players who discover a major win on their ticket can contact WCLC Customer Care at 1-800-665-3313 to make arrangements to claim their prize.

Cumberland Farms Survey Shows That Lottery Players Are Not So Superstitious

Brand's Survey Finds Lottery Participants Rarely Play the Same Numbers & Don't Have a Lucky Store

FRAMINGHAM, Massachusetts (January 6, 2016) -- As the Powerball jackpot soars to $450 million and consumers rush to purchase tickets for their chance to win big, leading convenience and coffee retailer Cumberland Farms today announced the results of a recent survey on lottery ticket buying habits among consumers.

The survey found that lottery players are actually not so superstitious, with 64% of respondents saying they rarely play the same numbers more than once if they don't win – and more than half of respondents saying they pay no attention to a store's previous history of winners when deciding where to purchase tickets.

So, while some may believe in rituals and superstitions - like being careful not to step on sidewalk cracks or crossing a black cat's path - it turns out people are not heading to their local convenience stores with a rabbit's foot in hand to play the same lucky numbers.

"With the lottery being such a popular pastime for Americans and for our customers, we thought it would be fun to see how people play, and how superstitious people really are when it comes to choosing their numbers, and where they purchase their tickets," said David Heilbronner, Senior Manager of Brand Strategy of Cumberland Farms.

"All of Cumberland Farms' nearly 600 retail locations offer a variety of lottery tickets, and we hope one of our customers is among the lucky winners this time around."

Cumberland Farms' "Lucky Lottery" survey revealed the following:

  • 64% of respondents said they "rarely" use the same numbers when playing the lottery. If it didn't work the last time around, it's time to try something new.
  • 59% of respondents said that a store's previous history of lottery winners does not influence whether or not they purchase tickets from that location. It's all a gamble anyway.
  • Of those who don't opt for quick picks, 38% of respondents choose their numbers based off of significant birthdays, while 11% use their wedding date or other important anniversaries when picking their numbers.
  • When it comes to hitting the jackpot, 46% of respondents would call their significant other first - while 10% confessed their first call would be their lawyer.
  • The web is the go-to source for checking winning numbers, with 74% of respondents saying they check to see if they won either online, or via Facebook & Twitter.

When it comes to purchasing scratch tickets, 33% of respondents select their tickets based on the theme (sports, crosswords or games, holidays, etc.).

And, for those who gift scratch tickets for birthdays or holidays, they're quite generous! 82% of respondents said they do not expect a cut of the winnings – a gift is a gift.

Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM) Release December 2015 Index

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (January 7, 2016) - The gaming equipment manufacturing sector posted a positive performance in 2015 as the AGEM Index improved by 15.47 points (+8.5 percent) year-over-year to 197.32, which represents the third consecutive month of year-over-year growth. Compared to November 2015, the index reported an increase of 2.99 points (+1.5 percent) in the final month of the year.

In December, six of the 14 global gaming equipment manufacturers reported month-to-month gains in stock price, with one up by nearly 15 percent. Of the eight manufacturers reporting declines in stock price during the month, five were down by five percent or more, with two down by 10 percent or more.

The broader stock markets reported modest losses from November 2015 to December 2015. The S&P 500 ended the month at 2,043.94, which represents a loss of 1.8 percent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average reported a decline of 1.7 percent, falling to 17,425.03. NASDAQ reported the greatest month-to-month decrease of the three major indices, falling 2.0 percent to 5,007.41.

Selected positive contributors to the December 2015 AGEM Index included the following:

  • Aristocrat Technologies (ALL) contributed 3.67 points as a result of a 7.6-percent increase in stock price to AU$10.21.
  • Due to a 4.2-percent gain in stock price to $16.18, International Game Technology PLC (IGT) contributed 1.56 points.
  • With a stock price of ¥2,888 (+0.2 percent), Konami Corp. (9766) contributed 1.08 points.

Selected negative contributors included the following:

  • Due to a stock price of $47.84 (-8.0 percent), Crane Co. (CR) contributed negative 2.59 points.
  • INTRALOT S.A. (INLOT) contributed negative 0.36 points, due to a 15.2-percent decline in stock price to EUR 1.17.

As slot machine revenue has moderated in a number of markets, casino operators have sought new sources of slot revenue by targeting the younger millennial demographic. The advent of skill-based gaming provides an interesting opportunity to reach a generation that has generally resisted slot play, opting for non-gaming hospitality options, such as nightlife, dining and live entertainment.

With the adoption of regulations surrounding skill-based games by the Nevada Gaming Commission in September, operators are now free to dedicate portions of their casino floors to machines that appear more like an arcade game than a slot machine.

Fastrak Lottery Services

While pop culture themes have helped attract new players, skill-based games appeal to a technologically savvy millennial demographic while adding an engaging new element to the experience. A player's skill can have a material effect on the outcome of the game and offers opportunities for players to progress in difficulty and even influence the game's payouts. In addition, these games offer community or group play where multiple players can engage simultaneously, adding a social aspect to the gaming experience. Though these games are not yet featured on the casino floor, several operators see their potential to attract new gaming revenue.

While on the surface the potential of these new games is clear, the marketing surrounding them remains murky. Attracting younger players requires implementing forms of communication that millennials use every day. Social media is the primary form of interaction for the demographic and will prove to be an integral strategy in connecting these new gaming experiences with customers. Some analysts believe that this connection could go as far as a seamless integration of social media into the slot machines themselves. With this functionality, players may have the opportunity to join a "social gaming network" that will increase the connection between gamers.

The evolution of the slot manufacturing industry continues to evolve, as do technological advancements and the demographics of the communities in which casinos operate.

Despite the potential draw surrounding these new game types, questions still remain in terms of their profitability from the casino's perspective given limited history. While skill-based games are still in their infancy, they offer a bright and daring future for the slot machine industry. With casinos beginning to experiment with the new products on their floors and the necessary legislation in place, players can expect to see these games arriving in 2016.

Together with the already proven EGT high performers at the gaming floor of Princess Casino - Vega Vision Up, Vega Vision St, Vega Vision+ St, Premier, Cat 4 Cash, Egypt Quest and the automated roulette Vega R8, they represent almost the complete product lineup of Euro Games Technology. All the machines received the evident approval of the operator and the high acclaim of the players in a short span of time.

The latest installed cabinets from Premier series in the casino are connected to the EGT’s Lady’s Cards mystery jackpot system of 4 levels and have immediately attracted an enormous attention,” shared Dobriyan Spirov, regional manager of EGT for Macedonia. “During their first days in action I was pleasantly surprised to see it myself how every of all the 176 machines of the model was occupied most of the time. It was almost the same with our Diamond Life mystery jackpot system. For the cabinets with the new game mix Premier Multi-6 the players were even waiting for a free seat.

The achieved high results in Gevgelija strengthened the partnership between Euro Games Technology and the Princess international casino chain even further. It has begun many years ago and has reached the stage of full trust and confidence after a good number of EGT’s installations in different gaming establishments of the operator, where the machines have proven their high performance and the delivered support services have been of impeccable quality.

The success of the installation in Casino Princess in Gevgelija is also a step forward in EGT Macedonia’s further growth. “Our sales for the year mark a leap of 250% in comparison to 2014, without having into account our supplied VLT machines that gain in popularity all over the country. We aim at continually attracting new customers also with our rental services. The positive remarks we receive from operators and players are fundamental for our market development expectations for 2016,” concluded Mr. Spirov.
