Record Sales & Transfer: Iowa Lottery Declares January A 'Bin Buster'

Lottery Sets Several Records Following World-Record Powerball® Jackpot Drawing

Iowa (February 16, 2016) --- Fuelled by a surge in Powerball sales leading up to the game's world-record jackpot drawing, the Iowa Lottery smashed several long-standing records in January, its latest figures show.

The lottery on Tuesday released its financial figures for the month of January, showing that the lottery set records for its highest monthly sales, highest monthly proceeds to state causes and highest monthly prizes to players since its start in 1985.

"We extend our sincere thanks to our players and retailers for being part of this historic moment," Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich said. "It was a bin buster - definitely a busy time, but we had a lot of fun, too. And our joint efforts have made a big difference right here at home by raising additional lottery proceeds for state causes while paying a record amount in prizes to players."

The Powerball jackpot grew for more than two months before it reached a world-record level of nearly $1.6 billion annuity ($983.5 million lump-sum option) and was split in the Jan. 13 drawing by three tickets purchased in California, Florida and Tennessee.

During that jackpot run from Nov. 5, 2015, to Jan. 13, 2016, the Iowa Lottery sold about $34.2 million in Powerball tickets. That compares to a total of $52.2 million in Powerball sales in all of fiscal year 2015.

With the world-record jackpot drawing occurring in January, total monthly sales for the Iowa Lottery hit $54.1 million, topping the previous monthly sales record of $42.2 million set in February 2006.

Monthly lottery proceeds to state causes also were a record, totaling $17.3 million. The previous monthly proceeds total of $11.6 million had stood since February 2006.

Prizes to players also set a record for the month, totaling $30.2 million. That surpassed the previous record of $20.3 million set in March 2013.

Throughout the month, the lottery also saw its highest Powerball sales for one day ($6.3 million on Jan. 13), its biggest sales week ($19.5 million for the week ending Jan. 9), and its highest monthly sales for instant-scratch tickets ($20.8 million).

Rich said that while fluctuations must be anticipated in the months to come, the lottery's strong sales through January have it well positioned to meet its budget targets for the year. Lottery sales and proceeds through January both are ahead of budget and its five-year average.

"Lottery sales are cyclical, so we know that they will continue to ebb and flow in the coming months," he said. "We will keep working hard to generate lottery proceeds for state causes."

TOOWONG, Qld, Australia (February 16, 2016) -- Leading interactive lottery business, Jumbo Interactive Limited (ASX:JIN), is pleased to announce a significant increase in profit driven by growing customer numbers combined with a good run of Jackpots. A focus on managing costs and improving Germany also contributed to the profit increase. Dividends have increased to 2.0c from 1.5c for the half-year period.

Profits rose sharply to $2.0 million for the half year due to successful marketing campaigns, a good run of jackpots and a focus on managing expenses, especially in Germany”, said Mr Mike Veverka, CEO of Jumbo Interactive.

Both ticket sales (TTV) and Revenue reached record levels of $81 million and $17.8 million respectively”, he said.

The balance sheet remains healthy with Net Assets of $22.9 million and the Company’s cash position at $26.4 million ($20.0 million net cash plus $6.4 million players’ funds) as at 31 December 2015.

The second half of the 2016 financial year has had a good start in terms of large Jackpots, new customers and customer activity.

Dividend Increase

Based on the strong first half performance, an interim fully franked dividend of 2.0 cents per ordinary share is declared for the half year (2014: 1.5 cents) with a franking percentage of 100% as follows:

Payment date: 25 March 2016

The Dividend Reinvestment Plan will be suspended for the proposed interim fully franked dividend.

The current dividend policy of a stable dividend payment remains unchanged.

The Australian Internet lottery business was the main contributor to the strong result with ticket sales (TTV) rising 22% to a record $80 million and a 20% increase in Revenue to $17.3 million. This was driven by 108,650 new online accounts over the half-year period combined with increased customer activity and a solid run of Jackpots.

Jumbo invests extensively in online marketing to grow and activate the database of customers who transact via its website (www.ozlotteries.com) and associated mobile apps (iOS & Android). The nature of lottery play is such that customers open an account online and either play immediately or wait for a higher jackpot. Marketing activity is therefore divided into first recruiting customers who open an account followed by then encouraging them to spend and play. The following KPIs are used to track the effectiveness of these campaigns and will be reported in the Annual Financial Reports for comparative purposes.

1. CPL: Cost per Lead (new online accounts) defined as total cost to acquire these new accounts divided by the number of new accounts in a given period. New accounts potentially become active customers after the account has been established.

2. Number of Active Online Customers defined as customers who have spent money on tickets in the preceding 12 month period.

3. Average spend per active online customer defined as the total spent by active online customers divided by the number of active online customers over the preceding 12 month period.

The following table summaries the Marketing KPI’s at 31 December 2015.

Mobile activity, Social media activity and customer demographic data are also indicators of customer behaviour that influence marketing yield. Mobile activity shows a trend towards mobile devices, which influences the development of the various mobile apps. 64% of customer interactions are via mobile device, up from 50% at 30 June, 2015. This has underpinned the development and release of version 3.8 of the mobile app which has full native purchasing functionality streamlining the order process without the need of a web browser.

The number of Facebook likes reached 106,000 at 31 December 2015, up from 95,000 at 30 June 2015. This indicates the importance of social media in the overall marketing mix.

Customer demographic data show a skew towards younger age groups (compared to traditional lottery players) influencing which Internet sites are used for marketing as well as the tone of voice and message used in communicating with customers.

Jumbo continues to invest in online marketing and its proprietary lottery software platform www.ozlotteries.com to underpin growth in future years.

Germany Restructure

In an effort to expand into overseas markets, diversify risk, and underpin growth, Jumbo obtained licenses to sell official lottery games in all 16 German states. Following a difficult first year that resulted in a divisional loss of $3.6 million, the German business was restructured in June 2015 to significantly reduce expenses and improve online sales and marketing functions.

The office was moved to Hamburg from Munich and a new Managing Director appointed. As a result of this, ticket sales (TTV) increased 37% to $920,000 and Revenue increased 88% to $98,000. The divisional loss was significantly reduced to $1.3 million for the half-year period and efforts will continue to manage costs and increase sales for the remainder of the financial year.

“The German business is leaner and more focused on growing sales in order to close the gap to break even. The restructure has had a positive effect however further improvement is needed”, said Mr Mike Veverka, CEO of Jumbo Interactive.

KPIs for the German business will be reported as for the Australian online business once this business is more mature and there is meaningful comparable information to report to.

Kansas Lottery Sets New Record for Monthly Transfer to the State

TOPEKA, Kansas (February 15, 2016) – The Kansas Lottery has set a new record for the most lottery revenue transferred to the State of Kansas in a single month!  The February transfer was more than $12 million – about twice the average monthly transfer.

The size of the transfer is directly related to the size of the Powerball jackpot in January.

By the time the nearly $1.6 billion world record jackpot was hit January 13, the Lottery had set a new record of its own – nearly $9.7 million in Powerball sales in a single drawing. In the last three drawings of the jackpot run (Jan. 6, 9 and 13) – total sales were more than $19.2 million.

The Kansas Lottery set a record in Fiscal Year 2015 with $75.02 million transferred to the State. The Kansas Legislature set a goal of $76.2 million for the Lottery to transfer in Fiscal Year 2016, which runs from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016.

With the relative lack of large jackpots in the past few years, much of our sales growth has come from our instant ticket offerings. Now, with this latest record Powerball run, we are well on our way to meeting and hopefully exceeding our transfer goal and setting another record this fiscal year.”

Two new Kansas millionaires were created in the Jan. 13 Powerball drawing. More than 190,000 other Kansas players won smaller prizes. Kansas Lottery retailers collectively earned nearly $1 million in Powerball sales commissions during the jackpot run.

Thanks to our players, who turned out in huge numbers to dream big, and the hard work of our retailer partners, we are proud to make this record monthly transfer to the State of Kansas,” said Presta.

No ticket has matched all numbers in Powerball since the $1.6 billion jackpot was hit by players in three states January 13.

The Powerball jackpot has rolled nine times since then and now stands at an estimated $189 million ($126.2 million cash option) for the February 17 drawing.

New Jersey Lottery’s Million Dollar Replay Finalists Share $1.5 Million in Prizes

TRENTON, New Jersey (February 12, 2016) – The New Jersey Lottery held the Grand Prize Drawing of the 2015 Million Dollar Replay program with more than 100 semi-finalists and their guests in attendance at the War Memorial in Trenton.

The excitement and anticipation in the room was palpable as attendees hoped their name would be drawn as the next New Jersey Lottery millionaire or recipient of another top prize.

Fifteen finalists received a share of the $1.5 million prize pool.

Svenska Spel Report Growth in Revenues, Earnings and Operating Margin

Sweden (February 10, 2016) – “In 2015, we demonstrated the strength of our strategy experience through Responsibility. After an expected decline in revenue in 2014, when compulsory registration of gaming was introduced, we now see growth,” says Lennart Käll, CEO Svenska Spel.

Both revenues and earnings and profitability improved. Swedish Games is well prepared for the upcoming deregulation of the gaming market, Svenska Spel's profit after financial items and tax for 2015 was 4.803 billion kronor, an increase of 41 million (0.9%) compared with 2014. The operating margin was 22.6%, which is above the owner's financial objectives.

  • A new agreement with the Swedish Ice Hockey Association (SIF) has been signed. The agreement runs for six years at a value of just over SEK 121 million.
  • A new agreement with Hockeyallsvenskan have been signed. The agreement runs for six years at a value of just over 50 million.

State Lottery Launch New Brand Image, Logo

PIERRE, South Dakota (February 16, 2016) – After 10 years with its familiar sunset-South-Dakota-and “L” image, the South Dakota Lottery’s logo has a new look…and a new attitude.

The Lottery today officially launched their “It’s All Good Fun” brand campaign aimed at improving the public’s perception of the agency and its products. A recent study conducted by Lawrence & Schiller, the Lottery’s advertising agency, showed many South Dakotans are neutral, unfavorable or unfamiliar with the Lottery.

Executive director Norm Lingle said the new brand slogan, which replaces the familiar “Your Ticket to Fun”, has a two-fold purpose.

We wanted the ‘It’s All Good Fun’ campaign to highlight two important things about the Lottery. First, that our products are designed to be fun and entertaining for players. And second, that they’re good for the beneficiaries of Lottery revenues,” said Lingle.

Crafting that clearer message also provided a chance to give our logo a more modern look.”

The updated logo features a simpler, contemporary design in orange, black and white. The new logo and slogan will initially be featured in TV and radio ads, billboards, social media and digital marketing. In the months ahead, the public will also see it on scratch and lotto tickets, video lottery machines, jackpot signs, the Lottery’s vehicles, and point of sale items.

The Lottery will also utilize a landing page at GoodFunSD.com to display statistics, facts and figures of the “Good Fun” the agency provides for the state. Lingle hopes it will help better explain the Lottery’s mission to the public.

We frequently get asked where lottery proceeds go and how they’re used because there seems to be a lot of misconceptions about that. GoodFunSD.com will break that information down to make it easier to understand,” Lingle said.

Revenue from the sale of scratch tickets goes to the state general fund. The first $1.4 million in monies from lotto ticket sales is transferred to the general fund with any additional money going to the Capital Construction Fund. The state’s share of video lottery revenues, minus 0.5% for operating costs, is deposited in the general fund.

Also planned for later this year is a redesigned more user-friendly Lottery website.

Florida Lottery Revenue for Education Surpasses $1 Billion for Current Fiscal Year

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (feruary 15, 2016) -- The Florida Lottery today announced that recent sales revenue brings the Lottery’s fiscal year-to-date education contributions to an estimated $1 billion. This accomplishment comes a full month before Lottery revenue for education reached $1 billion last fiscal year.

This is a tremendous accomplishment, not only for the Lottery, but also for education in Florida,” said Florida Lottery Secretary Tom Delacenserie.

For the past 28 years Lottery contributions have benefitted Florida students and schools, and we are hopeful that this year will mark the largest contribution yet.” It would also mark the 14th consecutive year that the Lottery has transferred more than $1 billion to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund.

The Florida Lottery has experienced record sales for six months of this fiscal year, with total sales to date 11.78 percent higher than for the same period last year. Arizona Lottery Reports Nearly $380 Million in Sales During the First Half of Fiscal Year 2016

PHOENIX, Arizona  (February 18, 2016) – Arizona Lottery sales exceeded $379.9 million during the first half of its 2016 fiscal year, which ran from July 1 through December 31, 2015.

This gross sales figure is an increase of 12.2 percent over the same period during the previous fiscal year.

These first half of fiscal year sales results do not reflect the entire windfall of sales generated by the record breaking $1.5 billion Powerball® jackpot drawing which took place in January 2016.

Sales data indicates there were an average of more than 97,000 winning Arizona Lottery tickets sold every day during the first half of the fiscal year,” said Brian Townsend, deputy director of the Arizona Lottery.

The Arizona Lottery paid more than $219.7 million in prizes from nearly 18 million winning tickets sold during the first half of the fiscal year. 

During the first half of Fiscal Year 2016, the Arizona Lottery transferred more than $81.3 million back to the state. That is an increase of more than $8.3 million or 11 percent over the same time period during the preceding fiscal year.

So far this fiscal year, funding from the Arizona Lottery has contributed to the State General Fund, Healthy Arizona, Heritage Fund, Mass Transit, Tribal College Dual Enrollment and Court Appointed Special Advocates (C.A.S.A.).

Scratchers® ticket sales generated the strongest growth with a 14 percent increase over the previous year. In fact, an all-time record for single month sales of Scratchers tickets was set in December as more than $54 million worth of these game tickets were sold during the final month of 2015.

Sales of the entire category of draw games, which includes Powerball, Mega Millions®, The Pick™, Fantasy 5™ and others, saw an increase of 6.8 percent over the same period last fiscal year.

The top five most popular games among Arizona Lottery players, by sales revenue, between July and December 2015 include:

  5. Crossword Deluxe Scratchers

 

The nearly 2,900 Arizona Lottery retailers statewide received more than $24.5 million in commissions from sales of Arizona Lottery games between July and December 2015.

1.5 Billion Powerball Jackpot Sets New Proceeds Record to Education

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri (February 16, 2016) -- The Missouri Lottery’s February proceeds transfer to public education has set an all-time record, thanks to the record-breaking $1.5 billion Powerball jackpot on Jan. 13. The Feb. 11 transfer of $42.1 million is by far the highest monthly transfer ever in the Lottery’s 30-year history.

“Not only was the record jackpot run a lot of fun, giving players a chance to do some serious dreaming, but it was also very beneficial for Missouri public education,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. “It wasn’t just Powerball sales that pushed sales and proceeds so high; we also had strong Scratchers sales, due in part to the holiday games and promotion, and more traffic in retail locations. Altogether, they created enormous sales and proceeds.”

Prior to this transfer, the largest monthly proceeds transfer was $30,359,547 in April 2012, which was a result of a then-record Mega Millions jackpot worth $656 million.

Reardon said many players also benefited from the jackpot run, including one $1 million Powerball prize won by eight U.S. Postal Service employees in St. Louis and 34 prizes worth $50,000 sold to players across Missouri. The state of Missouri collected 4 percent withholding taxes on these 35 prizes, which totalled $108,000.

A total of $8.5 million in Powerball prizes were won during this run and $3.1 million was earned by retailers who sell Lottery tickets,” Reardon noted.

This month’s transfer of $42,101,583 is based on January ticket sales, and brings the FY16 total to education to more than $212.7 million.

Since Missouri Lottery sales started in 1986, the Lottery has generated more than $5.3 billion for the state and public education. Annual Lottery proceeds comprise about 4 percent of the state’s funding for public education – and effort shared by local, state and federal governments.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (February 17, 2016) – At a press conference today, the Florida Lottery announced that the Florida winner from the $1.5 billion POWERBALL® jackpot drawing held on January 13, claimed one-third share of the jackpot at Lottery Headquarters in Tallahassee.

The $528.7 million prize was claimed by The Nickel 95 Trust. The trustee is Maureen Smith, 70, of Melbourne Beach.

The Trust chose to receive the winnings in a one-time, lump-sum payment in the amount of $327,835,077.79.

EGT Enters the Slovak Market with Its Video Lottery Terminals

SOFIA, Bulgaria (February 15, 2016) -- Euro Games Technology (EGT) signed a distribution agreement with the Slovak operator Top Game – a company with large experience and established image in the gaming sector in the country, which will now be undertaking the sales of EGT VLT products on the local market.

The partnership was announced and celebrated at a vibrant party where the VLT products of EGT were shown for a first time in Slovakia – the slot cabinets P-24/24 Up and P-24/24 St Slim with dual-sided Rainbow jackpot panel and a VEGA jackpot controller.

For a maximum performance they were equipped with the specially created multigame mixes Red Game VLT and Blue Game VLT, each containing 20 different games.

It is hard to penetrate the gaming market of Slovakia,” said Csaba Pardi, sales manager of Demar KFT, a distributor of EGT for Hungary, Austria, Poland and Sweden.

At present there are 20,000 gaming machines installed in the country and their number cannot be raised because of the restriction for new licenses. This remarkably intensifies the competition between the gaming equipment manufacturers that have to rely entirely on the high quality and performance of their products. These are the only arguments that could persuade the operators that it is in their interest to change their not so efficient machines with the models of EGT. It is also substantial, of course, to find the appropriate partner to present your products in an apt way and to cooperate for their initial launch on the local gaming floors. We believe that Top Game is the right choice for us in this regard.”

Soon after the official debut of EGT’s VLT machines, that raised an enormous interest among the local gaming elite, in December, 2015 took place the first installation of six cabinets P-24/24 Up and four P-24/24 St Slim in Cezar Club, Bratislava.

At present over 130 machines of the company have entered different gaming establishments in Slovakia. EGT will continue diversifying its products for the local market, planning to present its whole portfolio in near future.

Tuesday 9th to Thursday 11th August are the dates for the 2016 Australasian Gaming Expo to be held at Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island.

Featuring more than 200 exhibitors across 17,000 square metres of exhibition space, the Australasian Gaming Expo is easily the biggest event of its type in Australia and one of the world's biggest.

AGE 2015

All indications are that the exhibition will again be full to capacity with a wide range of companies showcasing the world’s best gaming and related equipment and services.

Following on from last year’s Gaming Expo where we saw a 16.5% increase in visitors over the previous year’s Expo, there are a number of improvements being introduced this year.

These include greater use of the Glebe Island site resulting in a 9% increase in floor space, the installation of a visitor’s lounge that takes advantage of the panoramic views of the harbour and an exhibitor’s sales area which will preview the Australasian Gaming Expo for 2017.

This year’s event still includes complimentary ferry travel from Darling Harbour to Glebe Island, providing all visitors with a spectacular Sydney Harbour cruise.

Of course there’s more to the Expo than a cruise, with one visitor summing up their Gaming Expo experience in the following words: “I find the AGE great for networking and I’m easily able to compare products & services under the same roof.” In fact, our post show research showed that 93% of the visitors saw the Expo as an opportunity to see new products and technology.

Event owner and operator, the Gaming Technologies Association, will again add to the fun by offering a surprise trip for 2 to Las Vegas for visitors at each day of the Expo, which was won last year by Liz Jacobs from the Hellenic Club in the ACT, Rod Pittorino from the Bayview Hotel at Gladesville in NSW and Gavin Hood from Skycity in Auckland.

Of course the Gaming Technologies Association’s members, whose exhibition stands would sit comfortably alongside the world’s best at any global event, will be in full force at the Australasian Gaming Expo - which is the “must attend” 2016 gaming trade event.
