Missouri Scratchers Sales Setting New Records

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri (February 23, 2016) -- Missouri Lottery Scratchers sales continue to reach new heights due to the first $30 Scratchers game and momentum from holiday Scratchers and promotions, along with the record $1.5 billion Powerball run that ended Jan. 13 and helped raise sales across all Lottery products. Five of the highest Scratchers sales weeks in the Lottery’s history have occurred during the last eight weeks, with last week being the highest.

Scratchers sales last week were $18.8 million,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. “Of those sales, $4.3 million was from the new $30 Scratchers game alone.”

The Lottery’s first $30 Scratchers game, “$300,000,000 Golden Ticket,” officially went on sale Jan. 25. It offers more than $300 million in prizes, 30 chances to win up to $10 million on each ticket, and there are 15 prizes between $1 million and $10 million in the game.

There will also be three second-chance drawings for a chance to win up to $1 million, along with monthly drawings for 10 $500 cash prizes throughout the year.

Reardon noted that the holidays produce some of the highest Scratchers sales of the year, because of holiday games, promotions and gift-giving. In addition to the holidays, the Lottery benefited from a record Powerball jackpot in January, and Scratchers sales also go up during big jackpot runs due to increased store traffic and lottery game awareness.

We also just started MO Money Mondays in January, which is a program to release new Scratchers on the last Monday of each month,” Reardon noted. “This should provide consistency, so players will know when new games will come out. It should also boost sales over time.”

New Zealand Gambling Expenditure Up in FY 2014/15

Lotteries decreased 9.2 per cent

Press Release: Department of Internal Affairs

NEW ZEALAND (February 24, 2016) -- Gamblers in New Zealand spent* $2091 million dollars on the four main forms of gambling in the 2014/15 financial year, $25.5 million (1.2 per cent) more than the previous year, according to figures compiled by the Department of Internal Affairs. They spent more in casinos, on non-casino pokies, racing and sports betting; but less on Lottery products.

  • The net take from TAB racing and sports betting increased 4.8 per cent from $310 million in 2014 to $325 million in 2015. This was driven by an increase in sports betting and the introduction of a new TAB mobile app that attracted thousands of new customers.
  • The net take from NZ Lotteries decreased 9.2 per cent from $463 million in 2014 to $420 million in 2015. Lotto sales are quite volatile and driven by the size of first division and jackpot prizes. In 2015 fewer customers were drawn to Lotto products, since there was only one week in which the Powerball jackpot went above $20 million. Prior to 2015, Lotto sales were on an upward trend, with an average increase of 5.0 per cent per annum from 2010-2014.
  • The net take from non-casino gaming machines increased 1.5 per cent from $806 million in 2014 to $818 million in 2015. This increase in expenditure occurred against a backdrop of declining numbers of venues and machines, but a higher average return per machine and venue.
  • The net take from the country’s six casinos increased 8.5 per cent from $486 million in 2014 to $527 million in 2015. This increase followed a period of significant capital investment by the SkyCity casino operator in particular.

When we adjust for inflation, we see that gambling behaviour has varied only slightly over the past six years, ranging from a low of $2,060 million in 2011 to a high of $2,099 in 2012.

Communities benefited from an estimated $655 million, or 31.4 per cent of gambling expenditure, for various purposes.

  • The New Zealand Racing Board allocated $140 million, mostly to support racing club activities and infrastructure
  • Approximately $201 million of Lottery Grants Board funding was distributed across a range of sectors, including sports, culture, health and community services;
  • Non-casino gaming machine trusts raised an estimated $260 million for authorised purposes;
  • Non-casino gaming machine clubs raised an estimated $50 million for their own purposes; and,
  • Casinos paid just over $4 million to their community trusts.

Details are available on the Department’s website ( under Gambling Expenditure Statistics.

* Expenditure means the gross amount wagered by gamblers, less the amount paid out or credited as prizes or dividends. In other words, "expenditure" is the amount lost or spent by players, as well as the gross profit of the gambling operator.

Arizona Lottery Extends Instant Ticket and Instant Tab Printing Contract with Pollard Banknote

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, February 22, 2016 /CNW/ – Pollard Banknote Limited (TSX: PBL) (“Pollard Banknote”) is pleased to announce a one-year extension to its Instant Printing and Production Services contract with the Arizona Lottery. Under this agreement, Pollard Banknote will continue to provide the Lottery with instant ticket and instant tab ticket printing and related services until January 14, 2017.

This extension continues Pollard Banknote’s long-standing relationship with the Lottery that began 18 years ago. This relationship is a testament to the company’s ability to foster enduring, cooperative, and mutually reliable relationships with its lottery partners, together fulfilling the common goal of increasing revenues and profits in support of good causes.

As the Arizona Lottery’s main supplier of Bingo games, Pollard Banknote has helped grow category sales by 32% between 2010 and 2014, reaching a record-setting $42 million in total Bingo sales in fiscal year 2014. Pollard Banknote also produces the majority of the Lottery’s Crossword games, with sales steadily trending up in this core category over the same time period. Overall, the Lottery has been able to leverage Pollard Banknote’s second-to-none expertise in extended play games to develop and strengthen its Bingo and Crossword categories.

Our relationship with Pollard Banknote began nearly two decades ago, and in that time we have achieved great success implementing many of the company’s strategic recommendations,” said Kevin Donnellan, Interim Lottery Director of the Arizona Lottery.

Most recently, we have worked with Pollard Banknote to lead the launch of our new Instant Tab program, selling instant tab tickets in age-restricted locations. We have worked closely with the company to grow both our instants sales and instant tab sales and will continue to explore new ways to offer our players even more value and excitement.”

In addition to providing instant game and instant tab ticket printing to the Arizona Lottery, Pollard Banknote provides marketing support and strategic planning, research, design testing, and portfolio management. Pollard Banknote also provides warehousing and distribution of the Lottery’s instant tab tickets, and was recently awarded a three-year contract (with two one-year extension options) for these services in September of 2015.

With this new contract comes a new business opportunity for the Lottery. As a result of new legislation in the state, the Lottery is now licensing vendors and selling instant tab tickets in age-restricted locations, including bars and charitable organizations.

We are very proud of our enduring partnership with the Arizona Lottery,” said Jennifer Westbury, Executive Vice President, Sales & Customer Development, Pollard Banknote. “Through ongoing consultation, the Lottery has taken advantage of many of our print innovations over the years, including Scratch FX® and the recent launch of its inaugural PlayBook®—the $20 Big Money Game Book. We are excited to have the opportunity to continue working with the Lottery to offer the best services and produce the best games possible to generate revenues for a variety of state programs.”

The Arizona Lottery operates entirely from the revenue it generates through the sale of its products. Since July 1981, the Arizona Lottery has paid out more than $5.8 billion in prizes to players, more than $3 billion in net funding to the state, and more than $686 million in commissions to retailers. Proceeds from sales of lottery tickets—nearly $3.4 million per week—fund a variety of state programs including economic and business development, education, environmental issues, and health and public welfare. In FY2014, the Lottery contributed $175.6 million to various state funds.

Responsible Gambling Trust Publishes Leading Think-Tank Demos’ Study of Social Media and Gambling

UNITED KINGDOM (February 19, 2016) -- The scale of the social media challenge facing gambling regulators and those working to minimise gambling-related harm is set out in a new report by leading think-tank Demos, published today by the Responsible Gambling Trust.

Demos researchers identified 877 Twitter accounts promoting gambling and noted that over

900,000 British Twitter users (around one-in-twenty) followed at least one promotional account.

It was found that if a Twitter user followed just the three most prolific pro-gambling accounts they would receive a promotional message on average once every 240 seconds.

The report reveals some specific challenges to regulators and those concerned about gambling related harm:

  • The range of online products and sources which promote gambling – such as through apps operating with digital currency or online tipsters, who may be paid to promote gambling as affiliates but who are not subject to any of the licencing that covers traditional gambling.
  • The very small number of highly intensive followers of online gambling accounts e.g. the 412 accounts identified as having sent more than 20 gambling-related tweets in the study period (four weeks in late September and early October 2015) whilst following more than 30 gambling-related accounts.
  • The extremely limited penetration by online efforts to assist and advise those wishing to avoid problematic gambling: those who follow pro-gambling accounts are very unlikely to follow accounts dedicated to tackling gambling related harm.

Marc Etches, Chief Executive of the Responsible Gambling Trust, said: “The Responsible GamblingTrust is committed to minimising gambling-related harm, and the interaction between social media and gambling is an increasingly important consideration."

"There is a need to maintain a careful balance between the freedom to promote legitimate commerce and the need to protect vulnerable people."

"We hope that this report will be helpful to policy makers, regulators and all those working to minimise gambling-related harm."

Carl Miller, Research Director of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media at Demos said: “This

study shines important new light on the increasingly prominent digital dimension of gambling, which poses new and specific challenges for policy-makers and regulators.

As we move so much  of our lives online, our research at Demos has underscored just how important it is for policies to evolve, to acknowledge the new ways in which we as a society are engaging with information.

Clearly, more needs to be done to ensure that messages countering problematic gambling are able to reach people where they can best be heard and have the greatest impact.”

Featuring more than 200 exhibitors across 17,000 square metres of exhibition space, the Australasian Gaming Expo is easily the biggest event of its type in Australia and one of the world's biggest.

AGE 2015

All indications are that the exhibition will again be full to capacity with a wide range of companies showcasing the world’s best gaming and related equipment and services.

Following on from last year’s Gaming Expo where we saw a 16.5% increase in visitors over the previous year’s Expo, there are a number of improvements being introduced this year.

These include greater use of the Glebe Island site resulting in a 9% increase in floor space, the installation of a visitor’s lounge that takes advantage of the panoramic views of the harbour and an exhibitor’s sales area which will preview the Australasian Gaming Expo for 2017.

This year’s event still includes complimentary ferry travel from Darling Harbour to Glebe Island, providing all visitors with a spectacular Sydney Harbour cruise.

Of course there’s more to the Expo than a cruise, with one visitor summing up their Gaming Expo experience in the following words: “I find the AGE great for networking and I’m easily able to compare products & services under the same roof.” In fact, our post show research showed that 93% of the visitors saw the Expo as an opportunity to see new products and technology.

Event owner and operator, the Gaming Technologies Association, will again add to the fun by offering a surprise trip for 2 to Las Vegas for visitors at each day of the Expo, which was won last year by Liz Jacobs from the Hellenic Club in the ACT, Rod Pittorino from the Bayview Hotel at Gladesville in NSW and Gavin Hood from Skycity in Auckland.

Of course the Gaming Technologies Association’s members, whose exhibition stands would sit comfortably alongside the world’s best at any global event, will be in full force at the Australasian Gaming Expo - which is the “must attend” 2016 gaming trade event.

Note: The Australasian Gaming Expo is a trade exhibition, for management representatives of Gaming Industry Organisations only including government, regulatory, research and support bodies, clubs, hotels, casinos, resorts and similar Hospitality Industry venues.

Trade suppliers are not eligible to attend the event unless exhibiting.

The Gaming Technologies Association’s primary members are Ainsworth Game Technology, Aristocrat Technologies, Aruze Gaming Australia, eBet Limited, IGT (Australia), Konami Australia and Scientific Games.

Operational Excellence is an imperative, alongside the lottery industry’s pressure to perform in this highly competitive environment, to be leaner and more efficient to drive better productivity and bottom line for stakeholders.

With the theme of "Operational Excellence – Getting Things Done from Good to Great”, this Seminar is specially put together with a different format this year.

Fastrak Lottery Services

Led by distinguished invited speakers, its workshop format focuses on best practices and in-depth interactive learning and sharing, which will come in useful for both emerging and mature lottery organisations.

Each workshop will be followed up with insightful discussions among lottery industry leaders sharing best practices from their respective organizations.  There is also a panel comprising APLA Sponsors, most of whom are also WLA Contributors, sharing their insights from the supplier’s and partner’s perspectives.

This Seminar caters to both senior and middle managerial levels, particularly those of us working in or dealing with operations.

It gives us insights into achieving operational excellence and also exposes us to other aspects such as web services (also known as cloud computing) and cybersecurity/cyberfraud which will also impact operations.

Hosted by Singapore Pools, the Seminar will be held in Sule Shangri-La Hotel in Yangon, Myanmar, a country with unspoiled beauty and mythical allure, undergoing rapid transitions on every front and emerging as the next travellers’ and investors’ hotspot.

A definite high-point in the networking program is a visit to the 2,600-year-old Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the oldest and most beautiful pagodas in the world.
