Missouri Scratchers Sales Setting New Records

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri (February 23, 2016) -- Missouri Lottery Scratchers sales continue to reach new heights due to the first $30 Scratchers game and momentum from holiday Scratchers and promotions, along with the record $1.5 billion Powerball run that ended Jan. 13 and helped raise sales across all Lottery products. Five of the highest Scratchers sales weeks in the Lottery’s history have occurred during the last eight weeks, with last week being the highest.

Scratchers sales last week were $18.8 million,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. “Of those sales, $4.3 million was from the new $30 Scratchers game alone.”

The Lottery’s first $30 Scratchers game, “$300,000,000 Golden Ticket,” officially went on sale Jan. 25. It offers more than $300 million in prizes, 30 chances to win up to $10 million on each ticket, and there are 15 prizes between $1 million and $10 million in the game.

There will also be three second-chance drawings for a chance to win up to $1 million, along with monthly drawings for 10 $500 cash prizes throughout the year.

Reardon noted that the holidays produce some of the highest Scratchers sales of the year, because of holiday games, promotions and gift-giving. In addition to the holidays, the Lottery benefited from a record Powerball jackpot in January, and Scratchers sales also go up during big jackpot runs due to increased store traffic and lottery game awareness.

We also just started MO Money Mondays in January, which is a program to release new Scratchers on the last Monday of each month,” Reardon noted. “This should provide consistency, so players will know when new games will come out. It should also boost sales over time.”

New Zealand Gambling Expenditure Up in FY 2014/15

Lotteries decreased 9.2 per cent

NEW ZEALAND (February 24, 2016) -- Gamblers in New Zealand spent* $2091 million dollars on the four main forms of gambling in the 2014/15 financial year, $25.5 million (1.2 per cent) more than the previous year, according to figures compiled by the Department of Internal Affairs. They spent more in casinos, on non-casino pokies, racing and sports betting; but less on Lottery products.

  • The net take from TAB racing and sports betting increased 4.8 per cent from $310 million in 2014 to $325 million in 2015. This was driven by an increase in sports betting and the introduction of a new TAB mobile app that attracted thousands of new customers.
  • The net take from NZ Lotteries decreased 9.2 per cent from $463 million in 2014 to $420 million in 2015. Lotto sales are quite volatile and driven by the size of first division and jackpot prizes. In 2015 fewer customers were drawn to Lotto products, since there was only one week in which the Powerball jackpot went above $20 million. Prior to 2015, Lotto sales were on an upward trend, with an average increase of 5.0 per cent per annum from 2010-2014.
  • The net take from non-casino gaming machines increased 1.5 per cent from $806 million in 2014 to $818 million in 2015. This increase in expenditure occurred against a backdrop of declining numbers of venues and machines, but a higher average return per machine and venue.
  • The net take from the country’s six casinos increased 8.5 per cent from $486 million in 2014 to $527 million in 2015. This increase followed a period of significant capital investment by the SkyCity casino operator in particular.

 

When we adjust for inflation, we see that gambling behaviour has varied only slightly over the past six years, ranging from a low of $2,060 million in 2011 to a high of $2,099 in 2012.

Communities benefited from an estimated $655 million, or 31.4 per cent of gambling expenditure, for various purposes.

  • The New Zealand Racing Board allocated $140 million, mostly to support racing club activities and infrastructure
  • Approximately $201 million of Lottery Grants Board funding was distributed across a range of sectors, including sports, culture, health and community services;
  • Non-casino gaming machine trusts raised an estimated $260 million for authorised purposes;
  • Non-casino gaming machine clubs raised an estimated $50 million for their own purposes; and,
  • Casinos paid just over $4 million to their community trusts.

* Expenditure means the gross amount wagered by gamblers, less the amount paid out or credited as prizes or dividends. In other words, "expenditure" is the amount lost or spent by players, as well as the gross profit of the gambling operator.

Arizona Lottery Extends Instant Ticket and Instant Tab Printing Contract with Pollard Banknote

Commission Research Features Online Gambling Trends for the First Time

BIRMINGHAM, U.K. (February 23, 2016) -- NEW figures providing better insight into gambling behaviour in Britain have been published by the Gambling Commission.

Accompanied by easily digestible infographics the reports cover participation in gambling, perceptions of gambling and rates of problem gambling.

The research, for the first time ever, also includes information about how people gamble online – the devices they use to gamble, where they gamble, and the number of accounts they use.

  • Participation in gambling has fallen from 57% in 2012 to 45% in 2015 - this can be attributed to National Lottery draw participation dropping from 46% to 32% in the same period.
  • National Lottery draws remain by far the most popular gambling activity followed by other lotteries and scratchcards
  • At 0.5% rates of problem gambling are static – 2015 (0.5%) and 2014 (0.5%)
  • Those aged 18-24 are most likely to be problem gamblers (1.1%), and 1% of men were problem gamblers in 2015 compared with 0% of women
  • 25-34 year olds are most likely to use mobile and tablet devices, bet in-play and gamble outside of the home
  • Laptops are the preferred devices among all age groups for online gambling while those aged under 45 are most likely to use mobiles or tablets to gamble in addition to laptops.

 

Paul Hope, Gambling Commission programme director, said: “It’s vital that we monitor gambling trends and behaviour across society.

Reports such as these are essential for us when developing regulations and for the Government when developing public policies on gambling.”

Principal Terms of the Cooperation Agreement

Pursuant to the Cooperation Agreement, the Company has been authorised to install LED panels and operate OOH advertising services in lottery stores in Shenzhen under the jurisdiction of Shenzhen Sports Lottery Administration Centre, as well as provide electronic coupon distribution and physical lottery ticket redemption services in lottery stores through Bluetooth Low Energy (“BLE”)-enabled hardware that will be installed as provided by the Group.

About The Services Provided

The end-to-end interactive in-store marketing technology solutions shall include OOH advertising and public information dissemination services on LED display panels are to be installed in lottery stores throughout Shenzhen. Information disseminated will include lottery related information from Shenzhen Sports Lottery Administration Centre, while a portion of the screen time will be allocated for revenue generating OOH advertising. Furthermore, the Group, through a revolutionary electronic coupon distribution and physical lottery ticket redemption systems, Le Yao , will be able to offer incentive-based mass marketing promotions, and utilizes the location-based BLE backed iBeacon technology on WeChat, the PRC’s leading text and voice messaging communication service APP on smartphones and a proprietary store-front coupon redemption recognition APP. Through the BLE-based “Shake” function provided by the WeChat platform, the Group shall offer customers free electronic coupons while enabling third-party merchants to gather social media engagement via driving social media traffic to WeChat Official accounts.

Reasons for and benefits of the cooperation agreement to the Group

The Board is of the view that the innovative nature of the marketing services will transform lottery consumption behaviour that will be catalytic in increasing lottery sales, creating a win-win situation between third-party advertisers in marketing outreach while providing new revenue streams for the Group.

The interactive marketing services will contribute to the Group’s revenue through revenue share from advertising screen time on the LED display panels and share of marketing service revenue from third-party social media engagement.

The digitalization and mobilization of modern business operations has created the need for a more efficient and measurable interactive electronic information system to facilitate data and information flow between Lottery Centres and various distribution channels. The Board is of the view that the new services offered will create a significant new revenue stream for the Group.

The Board considers that the term of the Cooperation Agreement are fair and reasonable, and in the interests of the Company and its shareholders as a whole.

The Group’s principle business activities include the provision of authorized lottery solutions and related services for both Sports and Welfare Lottery Centres in the PRC.

Global Gaming Women Launch as Independent Charitable Organization to Support and Develop the Next Generation of Female Leaders in Gaming

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (February 18, 2016) -- Global Gaming Women, which began in 2011 with the American Gaming Association as a development program to nurture emerging female leaders in the gaming industry, has launched as an independent charitable organization, announced Virginia McDowell, who will retire as Chief Executive Officer of Isle of Capri Casinos effective April 27, and lead the new 501(c) (3) as president and board chair.

Our founding board is very excited about the opportunity to expand and enhance the considerable work done by the American Gaming Association to foster stronger relationships between female executives, provide mentoring and networking opportunities, and deliver targeted educational programs,” McDowell said. “We have secured nearly $1.5 million in committed multi-year funding pledges to provide a sustainable structure for our new organization and to fund educational and grant programs. We look forward to delivering high impact programs and events on a global scale that support, inspire and influence the development of women in the gaming and lottery industry.”

Responsible Gambling Trust Publishes Leading Think-Tank Demos’ Study of Social Media and Gambling

900,000 British Twitter users (around one-in-twenty) followed at least one promotional account.

It was found that if a Twitter user followed just the three most prolific pro-gambling accounts they would receive a promotional message on average once every 240 seconds.

The report reveals some specific challenges to regulators and those concerned about gambling related harm:

  • The range of online products and sources which promote gambling – such as through apps operating with digital currency or online tipsters, who may be paid to promote gambling as affiliates but who are not subject to any of the licencing that covers traditional gambling.
  • The very small number of highly intensive followers of online gambling accounts e.g. the 412 accounts identified as having sent more than 20 gambling-related tweets in the study period (four weeks in late September and early October 2015) whilst following more than 30 gambling-related accounts.
  • The extremely limited penetration by online efforts to assist and advise those wishing to avoid problematic gambling: those who follow pro-gambling accounts are very unlikely to follow accounts dedicated to tackling gambling related harm.

As we move so much  of our lives online, our research at Demos has underscored just how important it is for policies to evolve, to acknowledge the new ways in which we as a society are engaging with information.

Clearly, more needs to be done to ensure that messages countering problematic gambling are able to reach people where they can best be heard and have the greatest impact.”

Tuesday 9th to Thursday 11th August are the dates for the 2016 Australasian Gaming Expo to be held at Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island.

Featuring more than 200 exhibitors across 17,000 square metres of exhibition space, the Australasian Gaming Expo is easily the biggest event of its type in Australia and one of the world's biggest.

AGE 2015

All indications are that the exhibition will again be full to capacity with a wide range of companies showcasing the world’s best gaming and related equipment and services.

Following on from last year’s Gaming Expo where we saw a 16.5% increase in visitors over the previous year’s Expo, there are a number of improvements being introduced this year.

These include greater use of the Glebe Island site resulting in a 9% increase in floor space, the installation of a visitor’s lounge that takes advantage of the panoramic views of the harbour and an exhibitor’s sales area which will preview the Australasian Gaming Expo for 2017.

This year’s event still includes complimentary ferry travel from Darling Harbour to Glebe Island, providing all visitors with a spectacular Sydney Harbour cruise.

Of course there’s more to the Expo than a cruise, with one visitor summing up their Gaming Expo experience in the following words: “I find the AGE great for networking and I’m easily able to compare products & services under the same roof.” In fact, our post show research showed that 93% of the visitors saw the Expo as an opportunity to see new products and technology.

AGE2015

Event owner and operator, the Gaming Technologies Association, will again add to the fun by offering a surprise trip for 2 to Las Vegas for visitors at each day of the Expo, which was won last year by Liz Jacobs from the Hellenic Club in the ACT, Rod Pittorino from the Bayview Hotel at Gladesville in NSW and Gavin Hood from Skycity in Auckland.

Of course the Gaming Technologies Association’s members, whose exhibition stands would sit comfortably alongside the world’s best at any global event, will be in full force at the Australasian Gaming Expo - which is the “must attend” 2016 gaming trade event.
