Northstar NJ, NJ Lottery & IGT Staff Volunteer at Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey

TRENTON, New Jersey (September 1, 2016) – On Aug. 11 and Aug. 30, employees from the New Jersey Lottery, Northstar New Jersey Lottery Group (NSNJ), and International Game Technology New Jersey (IGT), volunteered their time at the Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey (RMHSNJ).

All three organizations are committed to social responsibility and we try to engage our employees in a variety of civic activities,” said Russ Knapp, General Manager, NSNJ. “One of our main goals, shared with the New Jersey Lottery and IGT, is to give back to the community. Volunteering at the RMHSNJ, spending time with the residing families, and learning more about the organization's mission worldwide was a rewarding experience for all of us."

Located in Camden, New Jersey, the RMHSNJ provides families with a home away from home. The house provides all the comforts of home, while caregivers manage the hospitalization or treatment of their child or family member. The house has a large kitchen, communal areas, and private bedrooms, allowing families to stay together and maintain as much normalcy as possible. The RMHSNJ also offers close access to Cooper University Hospital, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Shriners Hospital, and the Wills Eye Hospital.

New Jersey Lottery, NSNJ, and IGT employees began their day of volunteerism with a shopping trip to stock the pantry and refrigerators of RMHSNJ. Upon arriving at the RMHSNJ, volunteers from all three organizations prepared and served dinner, drinks, and dessert for the families, and handed out New Jersey Lottery gift bags stuffed with t-shirts, water bottles and board games. The volunteers also spent time with the residents, learning a little bit about each family and their stay at the house.

We came to the Ronald McDonald House to prepare a meal and stock the pantry, but we hope the impact of our efforts is longer-lasting than just dinner,” said John Custodio, Deputy Executive Director, New Jersey Lottery. “We extend our hearts to the families residing at the RMHSNJ and their children undergoing treatment during this most difficult time.”

INTRALOT Announce 2nd Quarter 2016 Results

EBITDA Growth Accelerates In 2Q 2016

ATHENS, Greece (September 5, 2016) --

INTRALOT SA (RIC: INLr.AT, Bloomberg: INLOT GA), an international gaming solutions and operations leader, announces its financial results for the six-month period ending June 30th, 2016, prepared in accordance with IFRS.











1) The Group’s activities in Italy and those of Intralot de Peru SAC are presented as discontinued operations.

2) NIATMI from discontinued operations in 1H16 and 2Q16 includes a capital gain from the disposal of discontinued operations (merger) in Italy of €45.2m.


Commenting on the 2Q 2016 Results INTRALOT Group CEO Antonios Kerastaris noted:

INTRALOT’s 2nd Quarter results reflect the impact of successful efforts in portfolio re-organization through a dynamic roadmap of new products and services and the geographical rebalancing of our presence, assisted by completed organizational changes and cost containment.  We are particularly encouraged by high growth rates in mature markets such as the US as a clear sign of competitiveness gains and we are committed to further business development in North America and other promising regional markets such as Africa and East Asia.





  • Reported consolidated revenues increased by 13.3% to €331.9m in 2Q16 compared to the same period a year ago, shaping revenues in 1H16 to 636.9m or 2.9% higher y-o-y. Main growth areas in 2Q16 were the US, Turkey and Bulgaria.
  • The increase in 1H16 derives from: +63.9m in East Europe due to increased sales in Bulgaria and Turkey, +19.3m in North America, +1.5m in Africa and +0.3m in West Europe, partially counterbalanced by decreased sales of 43.7m in Australasia due to lower sales in Azerbaijan where the local currency suffered severe devaluations last February and December and -23.3m in South America due to softer sales in Jamaica, Argentina and Peru.
  • Constant currency basis: In 2Q16 revenues net of a negative FX impact of €37.8m reached €369.7m (+26.2% y-o-y), while in 1H16 revenues net of a negative FX impact of €77.1m shaped at €713.9m (+15.4% y-o-y).
  • Numerical Games is the largest contributor to our top line, comprising 47.1% of our revenues (+5.2% vs. 1H15), followed by Sports Betting contributing 35.4% to Group turnover (-0.5% vs. 1H15). VLTs/AWPs represented 3.1% of Group turnover (+75.7% vs. 1H15), followed by Technology contracts with 11.9% (+5.7% vs. 1H15) and Racing with 2.5% (-34.2% vs. 1H15).
  • Wagers handled: During the 1H16 period INTRALOT systems handled €12.3 bn. of wagers worldwide (from continuing operations), increased by 0.8% y-o-y. Africa increased by 21.1%, North America increased by 15.4%, East Europe increased by 3.1%, South America decreased by 13.6%, Asia decreased by 7.6% and West Europe decreased by 1.3%.



  • The Gross profit margin remained stable in 1H16 at 18.7% compared to 1H15, as margin expansion that took place in countries such as the US and Argentina was counterbalanced by margin contraction mainly in Bulgaria and Turkey. The payout ratio from continuing operations, in 1H16 increased by 3.2% vs. 1H15, while GGR increased by 2.8% (on a constant currency basis GGR increased by 14.3%). In 2Q16, the payout ratio increased by 4.0% vs. 2Q15, while GGR increased by 5.8%.
  • Other operating income in 1H16 totaled €10.2m compared to €12.4m in 1H15, posting a decrease of 17.6%. The major drivers of this decrease were the non-recurring income in Australia due the operations sale in 2Q15 (€3.6m), partially offset by improved operations in Turkey (€1.6m) and the growth in instant ticket services of our US operations (€1.0m).
  • Total operating expenses decreased by 8.5% to €73.9m in line with our strategy to contain costs.



  • EBITDA developed to €44.4m in 2Q16, posting a significant increase of 17.1% compared to 2Q15. EBITDA in 1H16 shaped at €88.9m, increased by 10.9% y-o-y.
  • Constant currency basis: In 2Q16 EBITDA net of a negative FX impact of €6.2m reached €50.6m (+33.4% y-o-y), while in 1H16 EBITDA net of a negative FX impact of €12.1m shaped at €101.0m (+26% y-o-y).



  • EBT in 2Q16 was shaped at €9.4m compared to €5.4m in 2Q15. In 1H16 EBT was €19.6m from €25.7m in 1H15 (€-6.1m), negatively affected by increased Exchange differences of €8.9m in 1Η16.
  • Constant currency basis: In 2Q16 EBΤ net of a negative FX impact reached €14.3m (+70.0% y-o-y), while in 1H16 EBT net of a negative FX impact shaped at €33.6m (+68.6% y-o-y).
  • NIATMI from continuing operations in 2Q16 was shaped at €-6.0m compared to  €-15.9m in 2Q15, while in 1H16 it was €-15.9m from €-22.7m in 1H15.
  • Constant currency basis: NIATMI from continuing operations in 2Q16 net of a negative FX impact reached €-5.2m from €-12.9m in 2Q15, while in 1H16 it was shaped at €-10.2m from €-28.0m in 1H15.



  • Operating Cash-flow more than doubled in 1H16, at €86.2m vs. €41.8m in 1H15. The growth is mainly attributed to the WC improvement (+1.4m in 1H16 from -30.7m in 1H15).
  • Net Capex in 1H16 was €26.4m, compared to €34.4m in 1H15. Major Capex items in 1H16 include investments in our US business of €9.7m and R&D of €3.8m.
  • Net Debt from continuing operations in June 2016 developed at €510.8m from €486.8m in March 2016 on a like-for-like basis. Excluding the €13.6m capital contribution to the Italian entity as a result of the M&A transaction Net Debt increased by €10.4m due to dividend outflows to JV partners and FX valuation at the end of June 2016.
  • We have in the past engaged in repurchases of our debt and may do so again in the future subject to market conditions. In particular, we are currently reviewing alternatives to refinance a portion of our debt (some or all of our 2018 notes and our syndicated credit facility) as part of our continuous strategy to maintain a strong financial profile and to extend the maturity of our indebtedness. There can be no assurance that any such refinancing may occur in the near future.
  • As of 30.06.2016 we held €48,3m of the 2018 bond and €11,3m of the 2021 bond, a total of €59.6m in nominal values.






  • Revenues from Operation contracts (licenses) slightly decreased by 0.5% mainly due to lower revenues in Azerbaijan, Jamaica, Argentina and Brazil partially counterbalanced by the improved performance of Bulgaria, Malta and Cyprus.
  • Sales from Management contracts posted an increase of 17.4% mainly driven by the performance of Turkey and Morocco.
  • Revenues from HW sales and facilities management increased by 11.4% mainly due to increased revenues in US, partially counterbalanced by the revenues in Argentina, an IT contract in Malaysia and the revenues from the Hellenic Lotteries.

Gaming Laboratories International's (GLI®) Thomas Bierbach Presents at 2016 Welfare Lottery Industry Information Security Training Conference in China


MACAU, CHINA (September 4, 2016) - Gaming Laboratories International's (GLI®) Director, Lottery and Gaming Practice Thomas Bierbach had the honor of presenting at the 2016 Welfare Lottery Industry Information Security Training Conference in Hohhot, The People's Republic of China recently.

The training conference, organized by the Technology and Research Centre (TRC) of China Welfare Lottery Issuance and Management Centre, was attended by about 100 lottery delegates from all over China. GLI was invited to speak with attendees as a result of recent exchanges with TRC since they also have a laboratory. Bierbach's presentation featured important topics such as information security frameworks for lotteries; ISO 27001:2013 and WLA SCS: 2012; electronic draw systems and RNG security risks; and lottery player protection and retail network security.

Niels Onkenhout, the New CEO at Dutch Lottery


THE HAGUE, Netherlands (September 5, 2016) – Niels Onkenhout (age 55) is as of September 1st 2016 the new CEO at Nederlandse Loterij (Dutch Lottery). He will be replacing Mr. Frans van Steenis (age 66), after a period of training, as Chief Executive Officer of the largest gaming organization in The Netherlands; this was as a result of a merger between two lottery corporations i.e. the Dutch State Lottery (Nederlandse Staatsloterij) and the Lotto (De Lotto). Mr. Onkenhout is the former director of the Supermarket Chain called C1000 and was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Jumbo Group Holding. Mr. Frans van Steenis will be guiding Mr. Onkenhout until the end of 2016, with regards to his new position as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the leading organization on the gaming market.


Niels Onkenhout has a proven track record as leader of extensive mergers between diverse companies. He stood at the cradle of the merger between the two supermarkets Super de Boer and Jumbo; he then played a prominent role in the acquisition and subsequent integration of the C1000 supermarket. Previously, Mr. Onkenhout was a member of the Executive Board of Royal Wessanen. He began his career at Procter & Gamble and Philips.

In a statement Mr. Onkenhout said the following: “This is a unique opportunity for me. As a result of the merger a thriving, powerful, financially healthy, strong and socially orientated gaming organization has emerged. The merged company, called Nederlandse Loterij (Dutch Lottery), is a great organization that will be facing many challenges to come; to be able to function efficiently in an open and a competitive market, it is crucial to stay ahead of the game and I see it as my key task to achieve this together with Nederlandse Loterij consisting of more than 200 employees.” 

Merging of the Dutch State Lottery and the Lotto has been achieved and with it Frans van Steenis’ main task has been satisfactorily fulfilled. Frans van Steenis has been the managing director of the Dutch State Lottery for 6 six years and has until now successfully led the merger with the Lotto; he will stay on until the end of 2016 in order to finalize all the necessary arrangements, plans etc.

Under his leadership a solid organization has emerged with a turnover of over 1.1 billion euro’s, ready for the next phase in a rapidly changing market with more foreign competitors in both the offline and online markets.


After spending five successful years at the Dutch State Lottery, Mr. Frans van Steenis became as of April 1st this year CEO of the Dutch Lottery, in which the seven-known lottery brands: Lotto, Eurojackpot, Million Game, Lucky Day, Scratch Cards and Toto are housed. Beginning 2017 Mr. Frans van Steenis will have reached retirement age and he wishes the transfer of his tasks to be properly carried out.

Frans van Steenis said the following: “Niels Onkenhout is someone who has proven that he is capable of leading complex organizations; with much confidence I can safely hand the steering wheel over to him.

My dream has been realized; I have been able to build the largest and highly socially involved Dutch Lottery; an organization which aims to make The Netherlands and the Dutch people happier and healthier.

The Dutch State Lottery and the Lotto have been able to achieve this together. It is now up to my successor to keep the organization future-proof in a very challenging market with many competitors. I wish him all the best!”

Because of his extensive practical knowledge Mr. Frans Steenis has been asked by the Board of Directors to remain as a consultant even after the transfer period between him and Mr. Niels Onkenhout has already taken place.

He will be giving advice in a number of complexed and important dossiers.

Tennessee Lottery Continues Record-Breaking Kick-Off to New Fiscal Year

Sales for 1st Two Months 9.3% Ahead of Same Period Last Year

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (September 2, 2016) -- The Tennessee Education Lottery continues a record-breaking kick-off to its new fiscal year, which began July 1.


Total sales for July and August are 9.3 percent ahead of the same period last fiscal year. And sales for both July and August were the highest for each of those months since the Lottery began selling tickets Jan. 20, 2004.

The increase in sales for the fiscal year has been driven primarily by instant ticket sales and the large jackpots for Powerball and Mega Millions.

Our continued growth, year-over-year since inception, is great news for education in Tennessee,” said Rebecca Hargrove, Lottery President and CEO. “We remain committed to our record-breaking success and are proud to be a valuable resource for the education programs we fund.”

Hong Kong Jockey Club Reaching New Global Heights

Record HK$3.90 Billion in Charity Donations and over HK$26 Billion Total Direct Return to the Community in 2015/16

HONG KONG, SAR (September 1, 2016) -- At the Annual General Meeting of The Hong Kong Jockey Club today (31 August), Voting Members re-elected four Stewards to the Board to serve further terms of three years each. They are Mr Philip N L Chen GBS JP; Mr Stephen Ip Shu Kwan GBS JP; The Hon Martin Liao SBS JP; and Mr Silas S S Yang JP.

Following the meeting, the new Board of Stewards re-elected Dr Simon S O Ip CBE JP as Chairman and Mr Anthony W K Chow SBS JP as Deputy Chairman for 2016/17.

Despite the economic downturn, the Club enjoyed another outstanding year, with overall turnover for the financial year (ending 30 June 2016) at just over HK$202.70 billion, up by almost 6%. The Club made another record return to Government of HK$20.91 billion in duty and profits tax and contributed HK$1.28 billion to the Lotteries Fund. Charitable contributions set another record of HK$3.90 billion.

Adding together betting and lottery duty, profits tax, contributions to the Lotteries Fund and charitable donations, the Club's total direct return to the community reached HK$26.09 billion in 2015/16, up 4.0% on 2014/15 (HK$25.09 billion).


These achievements are made possible by the Club’s unique integrated business model of world-class racing and racecourse entertainment, membership, responsible wagering and lottery, and charity and community contribution, which generates substantial economic and social value for the betterment of all.

Record charity donations

Reviewing the Club’s charity donations, the Club’s Chairman, Dr Simon S O Ip, pointed out that the record HK$3.90 billion donated to 215 charities and community projects was double the sum donated three years ago. Moreover, the Club’s Charities Trust has been recognised by the World Charity Index 2015 as the sixth largest non-government funder in the world and the largest in Asia.

“This substantial increase in commitments has been accompanied by an equally significant transformation in the way we address community needs”, Dr Ip said. “The Charities Trust now actively collaborates with all sectors of the community, creating opportunities for, and more importantly encouraging, multi-sector participation. Our objective is to maximise available resources in our community and optimise outcomes.”

Furthermore, while continuing to support a very broad range of community needs, starting last year and continuing over the next few years, the Club is focusing on three strategic areas - youth, elderly and sports. Approximately half of the Trust’s donations were allocated to projects in these three sectors in 2015/16.

With regard to Central Police Station, which the Club is restoring and revitalising in partnership with Government, and where one of the buildings suffered a partial collapse in May, Dr Ip reiterated the Club’s strong commitment to completing the project.

Racing to new global heights


Equally impressive has been the performance of Hong Kong horses where, for the second year in succession, 23 Hong Kong horses featured in the LONGINES World’s Best Racehorse rankings. Meanwhile, all ten of Hong Kong’s eligible races were included in the World’s Top 100 for 2015, with the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup being ranked ninth. Six of them were in the Top 25, meaning, in effect, that one in four of the world’s top 25 races are run in Hong Kong.

These achievements have brought global respect for Hong Kong, and in April 2016 Hong Kong was elevated to Part I of the International Cataloguing Standards and International Statistics Book, commonly known as the “Blue Book”, which is the highest status a racing jurisdiction can earn. All of this has been accomplished by a horse population of just 1,200 and in the absence of a breeding industry. In fact Hong Kong is the first, and so far the only racing jurisdiction without a breeding industry to be included in Part I of the Blue Book.


The Club’s record direct return to Hong Kong in 2015/16 reflected both the quality of its world-class racing and the strong performance of its responsible wagering and lottery services. Racing turnover for the financial year was up by 1.8% to just over HK$107 billion. Football turnover was up by 10.9% to HK$86.80 billion while the Mark Six, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, reversed last year’s small decline to record a 9.9% increase to HK $8.55 billion.

“What has enabled the Club to achieve these excellent results is the development of a world-class racing product combined with a rigorous focus on customer centricity”, said Chief Executive Officer Mr Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges. The Club’s HK$6.5 billion racecourse revitalisation, which this year saw the opening of five new or refurbished venues, has seen Happy Valley and Sha Tin racecourses substantially upgraded. Together with the excitement generated by top-class horses and star jockeys, all this helped push racecourse attendance to just over two million for the fourth consecutive year.

Also fundamental to the Club’s customer-centric approach is the development of new digital products to meet customer demand for speed, convenience and connectivity. To maintain its position as a technology leader, the Club is moving ahead with a multi-billion next generation customer information and wagering system.

The strongest indicator of the attractiveness of Hong Kong’s racing brand is its growing presence overseas, both through the broadcast of races and through commingling. “What attracts overseas racing fans is the competiveness of our racing, the depth of our wagering pools and above all our reputation for integrity”, Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges explained. Commingling which only began two seasons ago, had a turnover of HK$3.48 billion this racing season, up 31.5% on last season and representing 3.3% of total racing turnover. “It is a very promising area of growth, rich with potential benefit for Hong Kong”, said Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges.

Going forward

Looking to the future, the Club is fully committed to maintain its support for the betterment of Hong Kong and in this regard is continuing to invest in its sustainability and future.

With total race meetings increased from 83 to 88 and simulcast days from 15 to 23 next season, the Club will continue to focus on making racing and racegoing a unique customer experience. It will likewise explore the potential of commingling, particularly in Europe, and will further develop the strength of its digital technology. Above all, through the new Conghua Training Centre in Guangdong, which is scheduled to open in 2018, the Club will have a world-class training centre for its horses, positioning Hong Kong for the next stage of growth on the world stage.

Summing up the Club’s prospects, Dr Ip said: “Thanks to the efforts of our horses, the Club’s reputation in the racing world has never stood higher. Through the success of our business strategies we have achieved solid business results, which have enabled us to deliver record levels of support to the community. MEP and Stakeholders Call for Recognition of the Role of Funding from Lotteries

European Parliament hearing on “The way forward for grassroots sport in Europe” highlights the Recommendations by the High Level Group on Grassroots Sport as the European Lotteries Association announces its new Sport Award


BRUSSELS, Belgium (September 6, 2016)  – MEP Hannu Takkula, (ALDE, Finland), the European Parliament’s rapporteur the report on the Integrated approach to Sport Policy today convened stakeholders and policymakers at a public hearing on “The way forward for grassroots sport in Europe”.The event was organised by the European Non-Governmental Sport Organisation (ENGSO) and supported by the European Lotteries Association (EL).

In their opening addresses, ENGSO President, Carlos Cardoso, underlined the importance of the Recommendations of the High Level Group Grassroots Sport, also making a strong reference to the role of Lotteries in terms of sports funding and Jens Nymand Christensen, Deputy Director General of DG EAC of the European Commission highlighted the significant role of grassroots sport also in terms of social integration of refugees.


Following up with the publication of the Recommendations published last June by the High Level group “Grassroots Sport”, from the lottery sector, the Chairman of EL Sport Committee, Torbjørn Almlid provided numerous concrete examples of how Lotteries are using their capillary network to support all EU initiatives related to sport such as the upcoming European Week of Sport in all Member States; of how they have been sustainably supporting the creation of accessible sport facilities around Europe and promote various other projects aiming to use sport as a tool for youth and gender empowerment, integration and skills development.

Torbjørn Almlid announced the new EL Sport Award, promising that “it will be open to any social sport project, fully in line with the EL core values” and urged for the submission of projects.

Addressing the High Level Group Recommendations to the EU, EL President Hansjörg Höltkemeier expressed his appreciation for the overall work and the reference to the Lotteries and also welcomed MEP Takkula’s work on his new report on sport policy, noting: “It represents a renewed commitment to keep sport high on the agenda of the European Parliament”. He finally recalled that “illegal betting, not only represents a risk to public order but also jeopardises the sustainable financing of grassroots sport”.

MEP Takkula concluded the event with reiterating the positive societal impacts of grassroots sport, noting that many of the points discussed shall form part of his upcoming report and thanked ENGSO and EL for the organisation of the event. 

Projects can be submitted to be considered for the EL Sport Award as of December 31. The winner will be made public in June 2017 at the European Lotteries’ bi-annual Congress in Krakow, Poland.

Florida Lottery Has Best August on Record Second Year in A Row

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (September 6, 2016) -- The Florida Lottery announces it reached $467 million in ticket sales for the month of August, an all-time record high, and 5.29% higher than last year’s August record. August ticket sales generated an estimated $120 million in contributions to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund (EETF), driven primarily by a series of rollovers and high jackpots for both POWERBALL® and MEGA MILLIONS®.


On Monday, August 22, 2016, the Lottery transferred $150 million to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund from July operations.  This marked the third largest transfer in a single month since fiscal year 1991-92; it’s also 30% higher than the Lottery’s transfer for this month last year.

The Lottery’s sole mission is to sell tickets to generate additional funding for education.  We are extremely proud that this unprecedented sales record will assist in furthering that goal,” said Florida Lottery Secretary Tom Delacenserie. “For the past 28 years, Lottery dollars have benefited Florida’s students and schools, and we are confident that this year will prove to be the largest contribution yet.”

Florida Lottery contributions represent approximately six percent of the state's total education budget. Lottery funds are appropriated by the Florida Legislature and administered by the Florida Department of Education.


The Florida Lottery is responsible for contributing more than $30 billion to education and sending more than 725,000 students to college through the Bright Futures Scholarship Program. National Lottery’s ‘I Am Team GB’ Campaign is Runaway Success

LONDON, U.K. (September 2, 2016) -- The National Lottery’s month-long I Am Team GB campaign peaked last Saturday – with activity focusing on the I Am Team GB national sports day, one of the biggest ever mass-participation events to take place in the UK, with more than 200,000 members of the public getting involved. The campaign was designed to celebrate Team GB’s success in Rio, and to highlight and thank National Lottery Players for the huge contribution they have made towards this success.

In the week that The National Lottery launched its brand new #IAmParalympicsGB campaign, which saw the first TV ads air last night, Thursday 1st September, a review of the I Am Team GB campaign has shown that awareness of The National Lottery’s support for Team GB has almost doubled – going from 28% before the campaign, to 52% after it.

Throughout August, Team GB’s athletes, coaches and fans have all credited lottery funding as one of the biggest factors behind the success in Rio – and The National Lottery’s multi-faceted, digitally-innovative campaign was responsible for highlighting much of this praise.

One of the most talked-about elements of the overall campaign was the unique, personalised ‘thank you’ video content delivered through the National Lottery’s Twitter feed and developed by EchoMany – this in itself delivering over 8 million organic views on Twitter.

People who tweeted #IAmTeamGB received personalised content – such as an image of a Team GB athlete holding a placard featuring the supporter’s name or a highly bespoke video in which an athlete appears to personally reply to the fan’s message using their phone.

This helped ensure The National Lottery drove the most engagement on Twitter of any Team GB partner – according to data from Brandwatch, it received over 20,000 mentions on Twitter, more than three times as many as the number two brand, Nissan, with just under 6,000.

In addition, on Facebook, the campaign delivered celebratory bespoke videos every time a UK athlete won a medal. Total video views to date have exceeded 10 million and total engagements across all I Am Team GB Facebook activity have surpassed 11 million.

On top of that, relevant and timely advertising – such as daily digital OOH ads with updated medal news and figures and a tailored Heart FM partnership – succeeded in cementing The National Lottery’s place as a leading Team GB partner.

In addition to the campaign driving up overall awareness of The National Lottery’s support for Team GB, knowing about this support has strengthened players’ existing relationship with the brand, with 68% saying they feel more positive towards The National Lottery as a result.

This, in turn, has led to a third of players saying they would play more or be encouraged to continue playing as a result of the support for Team GB – which is positive news for Good Causes, such as the elite athlete programme funded by UK Sport, whose future success is dependent on vital National Lottery funding.

The culmination of the campaign was the I Am Team GB event, which saw venues nationwide open their doors for free to encourage the nation to get out and get active, with a total of 2,600 events taking place.

The event also celebrated the unique role the public played in supporting Team GB through playing The National Lottery.

As a result, many events welcomed returning Olympic heroes on the day – offering members of the public the chance to meet some of their sporting idols.

The event, a partnership with ITV supported by the British Olympic Association and UK Sport, drove more than 100,000 sign-ups (with initial estimates suggested more than double that number attending events across the UK) and led to #IAmTeamGB trending for a total of six hours in the UK on Saturday (27th August), with three of those hours as the top-trending item.

Adam Chataway, Marketing Manager for The National Lottery, said:  “Team GB smashed all predictions, and the Olympic Games in Rio were hugely exciting for the whole of the UK. But anyone who plays The National Lottery should be particularly proud. And the I Am Team GB campaign also exceeded all expectations, with record-breaking reach and engagement levels, ensuring that National Lottery players were rightly placed front and centre of the national conversation around the phenomenal achievements of our athletes. The I Am Paralympics GB campaign uses the same animated creative vehicle as the I Am Team GB campaign and similarly celebrates the unique affinity between the National Lottery-playing public and the Paralympics GB athletes they are supporting on the Road to Rio.

The campaign kicked off with a Thunderclap, with athletes, sports governing bodies, UK Sport and the British Olympic Association launching the ad at exactly the same time through their social channels, as well as the ad featuring on TV on Thursday evening. I Am Paralympics GB will run for a month.

Both campaigns were created in collaboration with ITV Creative and ITV AdVentures, produced by ITN Productions and designed by Art&Graft.

They were supported by Camelot’s in-house Creative Services, with bespoke video elements developed and delivered by Waste, EchoMany and Seenit. Media planning and buying was carried out by Vizeum.

Gambling Commission Publish In-play (in-running) Betting Position Paper

In-play betting

What is in-play betting?

In-play betting (or in-running or live betting as it is also known) is betting while the event is actually taking place, for example, placing a bet on a horserace while the race is being run, or on a football match whilst it is being played. This form of betting takes place mainly, but not exclusively, on sporting events.


In-play betting is predominantly an online activity with bets being made via the internet using either a betting exchange or a traditional bookmaker’s website, but it also takes place in betting shops or over the phone.

What are the risks to the licensing objectives from in-play betting?

We do not consider, at this time, that in-play betting represents a significant risk to the licensing objectives over and above any other type of gambling. We do however acknowledge that, like other forms of gambling, in-play betting potentially raises a number of issues that could impact on the licensing objectives. These issues can be distilled into three groups:

  • fairness and transparency of the betting
  • integrity of the betting
  • risk of harm within the betting medium.


Fairness and openness

With regard to the issues potentially affecting fairness and openness, such as speed of feeds or use of ‘bots’, in-play betting does not appear to generate specific risks to the licensing objectives as long as bettors are sufficiently aware of their position and the respective positions of other bettors and the betting operators.

This includes ensuring that any information deficit is clearly understood, as are any built-in time delays to operator systems.

We do not consider it necessary to intervene to prevent some players using technology advantages, such as faster connectivity speeds, to gain a competitive edge provided it is clear to all players that this can be done.

Betting integrity

In relation to betting integrity, there is potential for individuals to exploit in-play betting for criminal or otherwise inappropriate gain. However, other forms of betting also have similar potential for exploitation. We do not consider that in–play betting requires further regulatory controls to those already applied within our wider efforts to maintain integrity in sports betting.

Risk of harm

People who bet in-play may place a higher number of bets in a shorter time period than people who bet in other ways, as in-play betting offers more opportunities to bet. Some studies have shown that placing a high number of bets can be an indication that a bettor may be at risk of harm from gambling. We do not consider that someone who bets in-play is automatically at increased risk of harm from gambling, but expect that licensees will monitor all bettors for signs of risk as required by our Licence conditions and codes of practice (LCCP).

We conclude that the risk to the licensing objectives from in-play betting is appropriately managed through the current regulatory framework and controls applied by licensees. We will continue to monitor in-play betting for fairness and openness as part of our overall betting compliance programme, and take its particular characteristics into account in our wider work on integrity in sports (and other) betting and gambling related harm.

Football Bets to Top $90 Billion for Second Straight Season; 98% of Wagers Will Be Illegal

Federal Government Ban a Complete Failure

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 7, 2016) – Ahead of the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers kicking off the 2016 NFL season tomorrow, the American Gaming Association (AGA) is estimating that fans across the country will bet $90 billion on NFL and college football games this season. However, $88 billion – or 98 percent – of all bets will be made illegally thanks to a federal government ban. 

Illegal betting reached $4.1 billion on Super Bowl 50 earlier this year. In 2015, fans bet at least $150 billion on all sports. In a sign of how serious the problem of illegal gambling has become, more than 30 law enforcement leaders from across the country gathered in June for the first-ever Law Enforcement Summit in Washington, D.C. to better understand the massive illegal sports betting market in the U.S and what steps can be taken to address it.

The American appetite for sports betting has never been greater,” said Geoff Freeman, AGA president and CEO. “Unfortunately, a failing federal ban drives this national pastime into the illegal market and threatens the integrity of the games we love. As law enforcement’s deep concern with the thriving illegal gambling market demonstrates, it is time to address this problem and bring sports betting out of the shadows.”

Momentum continues to grow for a new approach to sports betting law.

Research released before last season’s big game found that 80 percent of Super Bowl viewers want to change current sports betting law, and two-thirds (66 percent) believe states should decide whether or not to legalize sports betting.

Further, 41 percent of Super Bowl viewers – 47 million people – have bet on the Super Bowl at some point, according to research conducted by The Mellman Group. An equal number say they have placed some type of sports bet in the past year. That’s nearly three times the number of people who attended every NFL game last season (17.3 million).

In addition to fans, support for a new approach to sports betting continues to gain support from key stakeholders. The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) this summer took a major step in support of rooting out the thriving illegal market by unanimously passing a resolution making clear their desire to address illegal sports betting through regulation. The USCM pledged to work with AGA to lead national discussions on the potential benefits of the regulated market and help identify platforms to protect city revenues.

Additionally, the National Conference of State Legislatures last month passed a policy directive saying, “the federal government must recognize the sovereignty of states to allow or to prohibit sports gambling by its residents… The federal ban instituted under the PASPA has not prevented the conduct of illegal sports gambling, but has in effect restricted the ability of all but a few states to regulate and collect revenue from sport gambling wagers estimated to be in the billions of dollars each year, to the detriment of state economies.”

Pennsylvania lawmakers also passed a resolution recently calling on Congress to repeal, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, which is responsible for the federal ban. New York has expressed a desire to take similar action.

In recognition of growing interest in sports betting, experts in sports, gaming, law enforcement and integrity will convene in Las Vegas at Global Gaming Expo (G2E), presented by AGA, September 26-29. Highlighted by a conversation with NBA Commissioner Emeritus David Stern, a newfound proponent of legalized sports betting, the approximately 25,000 attendees will learn more about the latest on this issue through insightful new research and panel discussions with leaders from across the globe. Methodology: In coming up with its illegal gambling estimates on football, the AGA took a conservative estimate of illegal sports betting activity from the National Gambling Impact Study Commission's Final Report. It applied GDP growth as reported by the Census Bureau to make these dollar figures current to 2016. Finally, the AGA assumed that the proportion of legal gambling activity on football at Nevada sports books is the best available indicator of what proportion it might make up in the illegal market, and applied this ratio to the larger illegal gambling figure.

MGS Advisory Board Raises the Bar for 2016 Summit

MACAU, SAR (September 2, 2016) -- Innovation, Creativity and Investment: three of the key forces that will shape Asian gaming and entertainment for years to come and this year’s MGS Summit will be looking at the prospects of each in bringing growth and prosperity to the Asia Pacific region. Currently finalising its line-up of topics and speakers, the 2016 MGS Summit will be supported by the SAR Government and MGEMA in its aim of delivering three days of thought provoking, visionary and challenging debate into new opportunities, emerging markets and key regulatory advancements over the next three years

The Advisory Board of the widely acclaimed MGS Summit has laid out the keynote themes for its annual conference at the Venetian Macao, November 15-17 with innovation, creativity and investment at the very heart of the debate.

The cutting-edge Summit, which runs alongside the main MGS exhibition, will operate across three full days incorporating panel sessions, key note speakers and advisory insights into policy and regulatory advancements; investment opportunities; and the Macau SAR Government’s economic focus on economic growth through business diversity.
