WLA 1Q Lottery Sales; Growth Up 3.1%; North America, Europe Up; Asia Pacific Down


BASEL, Switzerland (August 10, 2016) -- Lotteries worldwide experienced a generally positive start to 2016. First-quarter on first-quarter sales were up sharply in North America, thanks mostly to the record-breaking Powerball draw of January 2016, and were also up moderately in Europe. However, these results were offset by a contraction in sales in the Asia Pacific region. Overall, first-quarter on first-quarter sales grew by 3.1% globally.

The North American market enjoyed the most auspicious start to 2016, with participating North American lotteries reporting an aggregate first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 15.7%. Lotteries across the continent swept the board with positive results, on the back of the USD 1.6 billion Powerball jackpot of January 2016 in the US, and the performance of Lotto Max in Canada. In the US, three players each beat odds of 1 in 292 million to take home a one-third share of the main prize.

In the excitement created by the world’s largest-ever jackpot, Powerball players spent an estimated USD 2.6 billion on the record-breaking event, with most of this outlay taking place in the final two weeks prior to the draw – just two weeks earlier, the first prize had stood at USD 400 million. The effect of the huge jackpot on Q1 2016 sales was felt across the entire country, with Q1-on-Q1 sales up by double digits in percentage terms at every participating US lottery. In California, for instance, the USD 1.6 billion Powerball draw provided a phenomenal lift to sales at the California Lottery, with first-quarter on first-quarter sales rising by 23.7%.

Indeed, for the roll sequence that began on Saturday November 7, 2015, and that concluded on Wednesday January 13, 2016, the California Lottery enjoyed total Powerball sales of USD 386.0 million. To put this into context, the lottery’s budget for the entire fiscal year had estimated Powerball sales of USD 415.0 million. In particular, for the January 13 draw alone, California’s Powerball sales totaled just over USD 179 million; prior to this historic draw sequence, the lottery typically averaged around USD 2.2 million in Powerball sales per draw. A similar story was replayed throughout the U.S, from California to Florida. Thus Tom Delacenserie, Florida Lottery Secretary, remarked, ‘The Florida Lottery had a phenomenal third [financial] quarter.


With its best January on record for Scratch-Off sales, and USD 1.76 billion in total ticket sales, the Lottery transferred approximately USD 519 million to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund (EETF) between January and March.’ Secretary Delacenserie continued, ‘The third [financial] quarter often produces the Lottery’s highest sales, and thanks to the world-record Powerball jackpot, this year was no exception. The nearly 10-week Powerball jackpot run that led to a USD 1.6 billion jackpot, resulted in Florida ticket sales of USD 283 million, with Florida players winning USD 558.8 million in prizes and more than USD 114 million in revenue raised for Florida students and schools.’ Not to be outdone, lotteries north of the US-Canadian border also recorded very positive Q1-on-Q1 results, with Ontario Lottery and Gaming seeing its sales rise by 15.2% for Q1 2016 versus Q1 2015, and BCLC seeing its sales increase by 10.5% over the same timeframes. Similar to the US, the growth in sales at the Canadian lotteries appears to have been driven at least in part by interest in the Lotto Max block game, which saw a CAD 60 million jackpot in March 2016. Indeed, the past fiscal year saw a record number of Lotto Maxes, as well as a record number of MaxMillions draws.

The African market also performed robustly in Q1 2016. Participating African lotteries reported an aggregate increase in sales of 13% for Q1 2016, as against Q1 2015, with the main contribution coming from the strong showing of the South African National Lottery. Morocco’s La Marocaine des Jeux also continued its good form, reporting an increase in sales of 8.8% for Q1 2016 over Q1 2015, while Ghana’s National Lottery Authority continued on in its recent positive run, reporting a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 5.5%. Offsetting these results, sales at the Mauritius National Lottery contracted sharply for Q1 2016, as against the corresponding revenue period of 2015.

Europe presented a more mixed picture, with gains at Norway’s Norsk Tipping and France’s Francaise des Jeux being counterbalanced in part by a contraction in sales at Greece’s OPAP and Poland’s Totalisator Sportowy. Collectively, participating European lotteries registered an aggregate increase in sales of 4.9% for Q1 2016, versus the corresponding quarter of 2015. For its part, Norsk Tipping reported an increase in sales of 9% for the first three months of 2016, as against the first three months of the year prior, while Francaise des Jeux witnessed a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 8.2%.  Europe’s largest lottery, Italy’s Lottomatica, also enjoyed a good start to 2016, recording a rise in sales of 6.6% over the period January–March 2016, as against the comparable revenue period of the previous year.


On the other hand, revenues at Greece’s OPAP for the first quarter of 2016 were down 6.4% on the corresponding quarter of 2015 on the back of a drop in sports betting, while sales at Poland’s Totalizator Sportowy also moderated.

In Latin America, participating Latin American lotteries reported an aggregate increase in sales of 3.5%, on the basis of revised reporting measures from Argentina’s Lotería Nacional Sociedad del Estado. The Argentinian national lottery was once again the region’s strongest performer, reporting a double-digit percentage increase in sales for the first quarter of 2016, as against the first quarter of 2015. Elsewhere in the region, performance was more muted. For its part, Mexico’s Lotería National para la Asistencia Pública reported a first-quarter on first-quarter increase in sales of 5.8%, while sales at Brazil’s Caixa Econômica Federal held steady. On the other hand, relative to first quarter 2015 sales, first quarter 2016 sales at Chile’s Polla Chilena contracted, the dip in sales being apparently attributable to the very strong first-quarter 2015 showing of Polla’s flagship Lotto product.

In the Asia Pacific region, positive results from Australia’s Lotterywest and Hong Kong’s HKJC were not enough to compensate for a contraction in sales at the mainland Chinese lotteries, with the result that participating Asia Pacific lotteries saw aggregate first-quarter on first-quarter sales contract by 3.5%. The mainland Chinese lotteries in particular had a slow start to the year, with sales only beginning to pick up in the last month of the quarter. In consequence, China Sports Lottery recorded a Q1-on-Q1 decrease in sales of 7%, while the Chinese Welfare lottery recorded a Q1-on-Q1 decrease in sales of 1.9%. Particularly affected were keno-type lottery ticket sales, which declined 47.3% in Q1 2016, as against Q1 2015, and sales of the ‘Guess’ lottery game, which declined 13.9% over the same timeframe. In contrast, the sale of lottery products rose by 24.7% at Hong Kong’s HKJC over the January–March 2016 period, as against the corresponding quarter of 2015, and by 15.4% at Australia’s Lotterywest over the same three-month on three-month period. Elsewhere in the Asia Pacific region, sales at Japan’s Mizuho Bank held steady.

Florida Lottery Has Best July on Record

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (August 5, 20150 -- The Florida Lottery announces its strongest start ever to the new fiscal year, with all-time record sales for the month of July totaling over $532 million, 17% higher than the previous July record. Ticket sales during the month of July generated an estimated $144 million in contributions to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund (EETF).


The Lottery's sales figures represent the best July ever for both Scratch-Off and Draw game sales. Scratch-Off sales exceeded $332 million, with the introduction of the MONOPOLY™ FLORIDA EDITION family of Scratch-Off games accounting for over $100 million alone. Draw games accounted for over $199 million in sales.

The Florida Lottery is proud to start off the new fiscal year with our best July on record,” said Secretary Tom Delacenserie.  “As we move forward, we will continue producing innovative games and exciting promotions to ensure we continue to increase our sales and maximize revenue for education.”


The Florida Lottery is responsible for contributing more than $30 billion to education and sending more than 725,000 students to college through the Bright Futures Scholarship Program.

Louisiana Lottery SAINTS GOLD Scratch-Off Commemorates Team's 50th Season

$100,000 Top Prizes, Second-Chance Game-Day Experiences and Autographed Merchandise

LOUISIANA (August 8, 2016) -- As the New Orleans Saints gear up for their 50th season, the Louisiana Lottery joins in the celebration by launching $5 SAINTS GOLD — its eighth consecutive Saints-branded scratch-off game on sale today. SAINTS GOLD features three anniversary-themed scenes emblazoned in shiny gold metallic ink.

Players have the chance to win cash prizes, including one of four top prizes of $100,000, plus the opportunity to enter nonwinning tickets into a series of second-chance drawings to win unique game-day prize experiences or official autographed Saints merchandise.

In 2016, the Louisiana Lottery marks its 25th year of operations,” explained Lottery President Rose Hudson. “To commemorate this anniversary doubleheader with the Saints, we have beefed up second-chance prizes to provide more VIP experiences and winners than ever!


Four second-chance drawings will involve a total of 34 winners and the type of experience to be given away depends upon the entry period.

During the first drawings, one winner will receive a Saints Fly Away Prize package to the Nov. 6 game against San Francisco, including two tickets, round-trip airfare, pregame field passes, two nights’ hotel accommodations and $500 spending cash.

In addition three more winners will receive a Saints Suite Access Prize Package including a set of four suite level tickets to the November 13, game against Denver. The deadline entry for the first drawing is September 19.

Entries received from Sept. 20 to Oct. 17 will be eligible to win the 2016 Tunnel Team Prize Package including four Plaza Club Sideline tickets, four pregame field passes to be on the field as the Saints come marching in ahead of the Nov. 13 game against Denver, one night hotel accommodation (two rooms), a parking pass and $500 spending cash.

The winner and three guests will receive round-trip limo service to the facility in Metairie (or overnight accommodations if the distance exceeds 75 miles) where they will also view a team practice and have lunch in the team cafeteria.

The Lottery printed 1.2 million tickets, and approximate overall odds of winning an instant prize on the game are 1 in 3.96.

All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) to Address the Needs of the Gaming Sector

AIGF was officially launched in New Delhi to emphasise on the positive aspects of the gaming industry in India.

NEW DELHI, India (August 4, 2016) -- India, with 1.3 billion people and two-thirds below the age of 35, the world’s largest youth population, is poised to become one of the world’s leading markets. Economic growth has resulted in a society that is embracing digital content and entertainment like never before enabled by the explosive growth of smartphones and affordable wireless internet. In view of this transformation in the gaming industry, All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), a not-for-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and headquartered in Mumbai, an apex body came into existence, to focus on policy advocacy, research and forum for discussion amongst various stakeholders associated with the gaming industry. The AIGF aims at dealing with issues surrounding the gaming industry, and will comprise of game operators, players, social activists, lawyers, economists, policy analysts, industry experts, legal & advisory Firms, technology companies, gaming designers, payment gateway vendors, gaming bloggers and responsible gaming companies.

There is a fundamental difference between the Games of Skill and Games of Chance. The Supreme Court in 1967 in State of Andhra Pradesh, vs R Satyanarayana, ruled that the game of rummy is a game involving substantial degree of skill. In 1996, the Supreme Court in K R Lakshmanan vs State of Tamil Nadu ruled that betting on horse-races is a game of mere skill.


In subsequent cases, this position has been ratified. Similarly, the game of poker has also been recognised as a game of skill by courts in Karnataka and Calcutta and legislations in West Bengal and more recently in Nagaland. Not many people are aware that games like poker, rummy and fantasy cricket are already permitted legally even if there are stakes or money involved. AIGF was officially launched in New Delhi to emphasise on the positive aspects of the gaming industry in India, which was brought to light through a Panel discussion amongst eminent personalities from various fields. The panellists include Mr. KTS Tulsi (Senior Advocate Supreme Court & Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha), Mr. Kirti Azad (Former Cricketer & Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha), Mr. Ranjit Sinha (Former CBI Director) and Ms.Rosalind Wade (Managing Director, Asia Gaming Brief, Hong Kong), who will participate via video conferencing. The objective of the event was to create a positive imagery, as well as make all stakeholders and the general public aware about the industry According to a 2010 KPMG report, gambling and betting in India is worth over $60 billion, most of which is largely gray. A recent report from the International Centre for Sports Security (ICSS) estimates the betting market in India to be worth over $130 billion. FICCI estimates that the revenue potential by legalising betting and gaming could be around Rs. 20,000 crores. Since gambling is a victimless crime and the 1867 law is not seriously enforced, it would be best to legalise the activity to relieve India's fiscal deficit. The funds generated from this activity could be used to fund social and infrastructure schemes and promote sporting activities. To support these findings, Mr. Roland Landers (CEO, AIGF) projected on the objectives of the AIGF which includes finding solutions to issues faced by the industry, allowance of FDI and technology collaboration, promote responsible gaming, ensure Player Protection and work towards opening up the gaming industry, which will eventually contribute to the economy of the country. He was quoted saying, “The gaming industry has tremendous potential for bringing revenues for the exchequer provided it is regulated fairly and taxed at a reasonable rate.”If betting is legalised, it will be possible to monitor the betting patterns in a given sport. Therefore the menace of fixing in sport can be curtailed to some extent by identifying suspicious betting patterns by punters and sharing it with sports federations or law enforcement agencies. Globally, there are agencies to monitor betting patterns which assist organisations like FIFA in identifying particular bets which may be a threat to the integrity of sports. Legalising betting will also allow reputed gaming companies to enter the market and curb the activities of criminal elements. Additionally, it will dry up funds of the underworld, which has used earnings from betting to fund terrorist organisations.

Maryland Casinos Generate $103.8 Million in Revenue During July

BALTIMORE, Maryland (August 5, 2016) – Maryland Lottery and Gaming today announced July 2016 revenue numbers for the state’s five casinos – Hollywood Casino Perryville in Cecil County, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore in Baltimore City, Casino at Ocean Downs in Worcester County, Maryland Live Casino in Anne Arundel County, and Rocky Gap Casino Resort in Allegany County. July 2016’s combined statewide revenue totaled $103,849,764, up 5% from July 2015.


Casino contributions to the state go to the Maryland Education Trust Fund and also support small-, minority- and women-owned businesses, local impact grants and the state’s horse-racing industry.

Hollywood Casino Perryville generated $6,766,200 from both slot machines and table games in July.  Gross gaming revenue per unit per day was: $217.76 for slot machines, $2,667.27 for banked table games and $289.97 for non-banked table games.

Hollywood Casino’s July 2016 revenue decreased by $133,849, or 1.9%, from July 2015.  Hollywood Casino Perryville operates 842 slot machines and 22 (12 banked and 10 non-banked) table games.

Horseshoe Casino Baltimore generated $24,985,326 from both slot machines and table games in July. Gross gaming revenue per unit per day was: $216.98 for slot machines, $1,983.79 for banked table games and $907.52 for non- banked table games. Horseshoe Casino’s July 2016 revenue increased by $605,009 or 2.5%, from July 2015. Horseshoe Casino Baltimore operates 2,202 slot machines and 179 (154 banked and 25 non- banked) table games.

Maryland Live Casino generated $60,481,555 from both slot machines and table games in June.  Gross gaming revenue per unit per day was: $300.91 for slot machines, $4,535.78 for banked table games and $1,426.14 for non-banked table games. Maryland Live’s July 2016 revenue increased by $3,532,475 or 6.2%, from July 2015. Maryland Live Casino operates 3,916 slot machines and 206 (154 banked and 52 non-banked) table games.

Casino at Ocean Downs generated $6,550,451 from slot machines in June, and its gross gaming revenue per unit per day was $264.13.


Casino at Ocean Downs’ July 2016 revenue increased by $158,897, or 2.5%, from July 2015.  The Casino at Ocean Downs operates 800 slot machines, and does not have table games.

Rocky Gap Casino Resort generated $5,066,232 from both slot machines and table games in June.  Gross gaming revenue per unit per day was: $224.07 for slot machines and $1,187.03 for banked table games. This facility does not have non-banked table games. Rocky Gap Casino Resort’s July 2016 revenue increased by $735,588, or 17%, from July 2015. Rocky Gap Casino Resort operates 634 slot machines and 18 table games.

Lotto24 Maintains Its Sustainable Growth Trajectory in first half of 2016

  • Over one million customers
  • Strongly reduced cost per lead


HAMBURG, Germany (August 11, 2016) -- Lotto24 AG,, Germany's leading online provider of state-licensed lotteries, successfully maintained its sustainable growth trajectory in the first half of 2016: billings rose by 35.0% to EUR 84.5 million (prior year: EUR 62.6 million) and revenues by as much as 51.3% to EUR 9.2 million (prior year: EUR 6.1 million). Despite a very strong comparative period in 2015 caused by the favourable jackpot situation, billings were up 14.5% to EUR 43.1 million and revenues by 29.5% to EUR 4.8 million in the second quarter of 2016. Due in part to the success of lotto clubs launched in February 2016, gross margin improved to 10.9% in the first six months of 2016 (prior year: 9.7%).

In the first quarter of 2016, the number of new customers benefited to some extent from strong awareness of the second-highest »EuroJackpot« in the history of this European lottery. As expected, however, the European soccer championship and resulting drop in lotto activity throughout Germany had a negative impact on second quarter sales. Nevertheless, Lotto24 gained 175 thousand new customers in the first half of 2016 (prior year: 208 thousand). All in all, the number of registered customers increased by 45% to 1,058 thousand (prior year: 730 thousand) - and thus already passed the first million-customer mark in April 2016.


In addition, Lotto24 was able to significantly reduce cost per lead (CPL) from EUR 32.80 in the previous year to EUR 28.73 in the first half of 2016. The strong increase in revenues in particular, coupled with a reduction in marketing expenses from EUR -6.8 million to EUR -5.0 million, resulted in an improvement in EBIT to EUR -3.4 million (prior year: EUR -7.9 million). At EUR -1.4 million, the net result for the period was considerably better than in the previous year (EUR -7.0 million).

In 2016, Lotto24 plans to consolidate and expand its market leadership as an online provider of state lotteries. Provided that external conditions remain unchanged, and depending on the jackpot situation, the company will pursue a strategy of moderate and sustainable growth. Assuming a statistically average jackpot frequency and volume, the company expects lower jackpot effects than in the previous record year and therefore plans a significant reduction in marketing expenses, a much lower number of new customers, and CPL on a par with the previous year. Lotto24 AG expects an increase in billings of 25% to 30% and a slight year-on-year improvement in gross margin. According to company expectations, losses will be lower than in the previous year with regard to both EBIT and the net result.

Maryland Lottery Sets All-Time Record for Sales and Profits

Growing Casino Business Also Sets All-Time Record


BALTIMORE, Maryland (August 10, 2016) -- Maryland Lottery and Gaming (ML&G) today announced more than a half-dozen record-breaking figures for Fiscal Year 2016. The Lottery’s record sales of $1.908 billion bested the previous record set in FY2012 and powered all-time highs for prizes to players, retailer commissions and profit to the State of Maryland.

ML&G contributed an unprecedented $1.079 billion to the State of Maryland – $569.8 million from traditional lottery and $510 million from casinos. The total represents a 6.7 % increase from the previous combined record of $1.012 billion set in FY2015. ML&G is the fourth-largest contributor to the state, and profits support Maryland’s good causes, including the Maryland Education Trust Fund; public health and safety; small, minority and women- owned business; horse-racing, veterans’ organizations and more.

"The many milestones that we reached clearly reflect the good year we had, not just for the lottery but for everyone – more prizes for our players, stronger commissions for our retailers, and most importantly, an all-time record contribution to the State," said Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director Gordon Medenica. "We're optimistic that the coming year, which will bring the opening of the state's sixth casino, will be another record-setter."

Lottery retailers and players benefited from the record-breaking year. The Lottery’s network of 4,539 retailers earned an all-time high of $141.2 million from sales commissions, a $12.6 million (9.8 %) increase from the previous mark of $128.6 million set in FY2015. Average commission per retailer rose 9.7 % to $31,099.

Lottery players won $1.135 billion in prizes, a 6.5 % increase from the previous record of $1.066 billion in FY2012, and an 8.2 % increase year-over-year. The Lottery paid an average of $3.1 million a day in prizes during FY2016. Twenty-four players won at least $1 million on instant (scratch-off) tickets or draw games.

The Lottery ticket sales record of $1.908 billion surpassed the previous mark of $1.795 billion in FY2012 by 6.3 %. Sales increased by $146.0 million (8.2 %) year over year.

For the second consecutive year, sales of instant tickets (scratch-offs) set an all-time record, totalling $611.3 million, an increase of $65.2 million (12.0 %) over FY2015.

Among the Maryland Lottery’s 10 draw games, Powerball was a standout, fuelled by the $1.6 billion jackpot in January 2016. Powerball sales totalled $143.5 million for the fiscal year, an increase of $54.0 million (60.3 %) over FY2015 and $12.2 million more than the previous record set in FY2013. Powerball tickets first went on sale in Maryland in 2010.

FY2016 also saw the Maryland Lottery add to its lineup of draw games for the first time since 2012 with the Cash4Life game, which went on sale in January 2016. Maryland became the sixth state to join the multi-state game, which is drawn twice a week and features a top prize of $1,000 a day for life. Sales of Maryland’s newest game totaled $12 million, and the state saw its first top-prize winner, with a Frederick resident winning in the May 2 drawing.


The growth of the state’s casino gaming industry continued during FY2016, which marked the first time that five casinos were operating in Maryland for a full fiscal year. Gross gaming revenue totaled $1.144 billion, beating last year’s figure by $105 million (10.2 %).

Casino revenue contributed $402.5 million to the Maryland Education Trust Fund (ETF), an increase of $14.7 million (3.8 %) from FY2015. The ETF supports early childhood education, public elementary and secondary education, public school construction and capital improvement projects. Since the State’s first casino opened in 2010, more than $1.5 billion has gone to the ETF.

FY2016 casino revenue was also divided among the following:

  • Maryland’s horse racing industry: $57.1 million, a 7.4 % increase from FY2015, divided between the Racetrack Facility Renewal and Horse Racing Purse Dedication accounts.
  • Local impact grants: $39.7 million, an 8.8 % increase from FY2015.
  • Small-, minority- and women-owned businesses: $10.8 million, an 8.8 % increase from FY2015.
  • Responsible gaming: $3.8 million.


More than 5,200 people worked at Maryland’s five casinos during FY2016, including more than 4,200 full-time employees. In addition, there are approximately 1,100 construction workers on site daily at MGM National Harbor, the state’s sixth casino, which is anticipated to open in December. When it is open and fully staffed, MGM National Harbor is expected to employ approximately 3,600.

Arkansas Scholarship Lottery Sales Up Sharply in July


LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (August 10, 2016) -- Arkansas Scholarship Lottery officials have released July sales reports, which show total sales figures up more than $6.5 million versus July 2015 total sales.

Draw game sales – which includes Powerball, Mega Millions, Lucky for Life and the Arkansas-only Natural State Jackpot -- were up 77 percent over July 2015 figures.

This increase is attributable in part to recent large jackpots in the national draw games Mega Millions and Powerball, Arkansas Scholarship Lottery Director Bishop Woosley noted.


The Arkansas Scholarship Lottery’s instant (or “scratch-off”) ticket sales were up 8 percent – or more than $2 million dollars – versus July 2015 numbers, spurred by the successful $5 Money Multiplier and $10 Jumbo Bucks Bonus tickets. This marks the highest July instant ticket sales month since 2012, Woosley said.

Total proceeds, including unclaimed prizes, exceeded $10 million dollars – the highest-ever July proceeds for the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery on record.

More proceeds means more scholarships available for college-bound Arkansas students,” Woosley said today. “To us, it’s always about scholarships; that’s our mission, so we are proud of our July numbers and the people in Arkansas who make it possible.”

The current Executive Teams of Fintoto, RAY, and Veikkaus will be responsible for running the present gaming operators until the end of this year.

  • The new Finnish gaming company will start its operations on 1 January 2017, as the gaming operations of Fintoto, RAY, and Veikkaus merge.
  • The new company will offer fun and benefits by providing entertaining Finnish games: it will generate over one billion euros a year to the common good for everyone living in Finland.
  • For the present, the company operates under the temporary name FRV Evo Oy. As of 1 January 2017, the new gaming company will be called Veikkaus (press release 16 June 2016). The company has a total of 1.9 million Finnish loyal customers. The company employs nearly 2,000 people.

Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM) Releases July 2016 Index


LAS VEGAS, NV (August 8, 2016) - The AGEM Index posted an impressive increase in July 2016 after gaining 4.67 points in June 2016. The composite index stood at 294.68 at the close of the month, which represents an increase of 34.67 points, or 13.3 percent, when compared to June 2016. The AGEM Index reported a year-over-year increase for the ninth consecutive month, rising 92.78 points, or 46 percent, when compared to July 2015.

During the latest period, 8 of the 14 global gaming equipment manufacturers reported month-to-month increases in stock price, with four up by more than 10 percent. Five manufacturers reported decreases in stock price during the month, while INTRALOT remained flat.

The broader stock markets reported positive results in July 2016 as well. The S&P 500 reported a month-to-month increase of 3.6 percent, rising to 2173.60. Additionally, the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 2.8 percent to 18,432.24. NASDAQ increased 6.9 percent during the period, rising to 5,162.13.

  • Aristocrat (ALL) reported a stock price of AU$15.94 (+15.5 percent) and contributed 20.38 points.
  • International Gaming Technology (IGT) contributed 5.23 points due to a 11.5-percent increase in stock price to $20.90.
  • With a stock price of $62.30 (+9.8 percent), Crane Co. (CR) contributed 3.86 points.


Selected negative contributors included the following:

  • With a stock price of $0.29 (-6.5 percent), Galaxy Gaming Inc. (GLXZ) contributed negative 0.01 points.
  • Transact Technologies (TACT) contributed negative 0.03 points due to a 4.5-percent decline in stock price to $7.66.
  • Astro Corp. (Taiwan: 3064) reported a stock price of NT$36.45 (-2.3 percent) and contributed negative 0.01 points.


A number of industry manufacturers released financial results for the second quarter of 2016 in recent weeks. Selected company highlights below suggest mostly positive results for key players in the industry.

International Gaming Technology (IGT) reported total revenue of $1,285 million in the second quarter of 2016, which represents an increase of 1 percent compared to the same quarter in the previous year. Bright spots included growth in IGT's lottery business in North America and Italy and service revenues. Global lottery revenue, excluding Italy, grew 6 percent on a same store basis while lottery wagers in Italy increased 8 percent. Gaming service revenue also expanded 5 percent in the second quarter despite a lower global installation base.


Agilysys (AGYS) reported fiscal year 2017 quarter one revenues of $31 million, up 12.7 percent over the prior year. Subscription based revenue helped drive these positive results, increasing 30 percent year over year. Agilysys continues to focus on growing its business in recurring revenue streams such as its subscription based services. Total contract value of bookings for subscription based business increased 250 percent year over year and recurring revenue continues to be a larger portion of Agilysys' revenue mix.

Scientific Games (SGMS) reported revenue for the second quarter of 2016 of $729.2 million, which represents a gain of 5 percent over the same period of the prior year. Gaming machine sales revenue was up 11 percent to $154.4 million as Scientific Games sold 7,668 new machines in the last quarter. The North American market was particularly strong as sales increased 17 percent year on year. Despite the strong performance in gaming machines, gaming operations experienced a 2-percent decline due to a reduction in the installed base of WAP, premium, and daily-fee participation games. Lottery revenue expanded 7.2 percent despite the expiration of Scientific's China Sports Lottery contract. Scientific Games continues to lead the market in instant games with revenues of $150.9 million in the second quarter of 2016. Finally, interactive gaming revenue experienced growth of 62 percent to $83.4 million. The success of the unit indicates the popularity of social games and apps that are a burgeoning portion of Scientific's portfolio. Scientific Games also named Kevin Sheehan as the new CEO and President; Sheehan comes from Norwegian Cruise Line. President Gavin Isaacs was named Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Transact Technologies (TACT) reported a year over year decline in revenues of 14 percent as second quarter revenues totaled $14.8 million. Transact Technologies' casino and gaming revenues fell 29 percent from $7.2 million in the second quarter of 2015 to $5.2 million. This decline was primarily due to lower sales of domestic and international printers and the company experienced no new installations of its Epicentral software system.

The AGEM Index

The Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM) produces the monthly AGEM Index that comprises 14 global gaming suppliers throughout the world. A total of 9 suppliers are based in the United States and are listed on the NYSE, Nasdaq or OTC market, while two trade on the Australian exchange, one supplier trades on the Athens exchange, one on the Tokyo exchange, and another trades on the Taiwan OTC exchange. The index is computed based on the month-end stock price (adjusted for dividends and splits) of each company and weighted based on approximation of market capitalization. Market capitalizations for manufacturers trading on foreign exchanges have been converted to US dollar-equivalents as of month-end for comparability purposes. The AGEM Index is based on a 100-point value as of January 2005.

Malta iGaming Seminar to Host First Ever Awards for iGaming Employees in Malta

MALTA (August 5, 2016) -- The 8th edition of the Malta iGaming Seminar will take place at the Grand Masters Suite, Hilton Malta between the 7th and 9th of November 2016. This was announced by Jeffrey Buttigieg, Director of MIGS and the COO of RE/MAX Malta during a press conference together with The Malta Gaming Authority, Executive Chairman, Joseph Cuschieri.

Addressing the media conference, Mr Buttigieg said “We are delighted to host the 8th edition of the Malta iGaming Seminar, a seminar which started as a local event aimed at educating foreign investors to relocate to Malta and now has become an international event where delegates and speakers converge to discuss, network and debate regulatory gaming policy, latest trends and technology of the global gaming industry.”
