Years & More Than $150 Billion: The New York Lottery Celebrates 50th
$61 billion to education,
$83 billion in prizes, and $9.2 billion for retailers over ½
NEW YORK, N.Y (June 16, 2017) -- The
New York Lottery turns 50 this weekend, celebrating a lasting legacy that has
generated more than $150 billion in revenue to help New Yorkers and established
one of the most recognizable brands in the country.
The New York Lottery celebrated its
50th anniversary today at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, featuring a live
televised drawing of the Midday NUMBERS and WIN 4 games hosted by Lottery
spokeswoman Yolanda Vega, along with additional promotions and events.
Over the past 50 years, the
New York Lottery has established itself as an intrinsic part of the Empire
States culture, said Gweneth Dean, Director of the
Commissions Division of the Lottery, We are proud of the
Lotterys record of unparalleled success and we look forward to continued
growth and innovation.
The New York State Constitution was
amended in 1966 establishing the New York Lottery with all net proceeds
applied exclusively to or in aid or support of education. At
the time, New Hampshire was the only other state to offer a public lottery. On
June 17, 1967, banks in New York City began selling $1 New York Lottery tickets
for a monthly raffle. For every million tickets sold, 240 winners were drawn to
share in $300,000 in prizes ranging from $150 to $100,000.
Since those early days, the New York
Lottery has grown to be the most profitable lottery in North America. The New
York Lottery has generated $154.1 billion in private revenue to help New
Yorkers since 1967:
- Generating billions of dollars for public schools:
More than 700 school districts across the state have directly benefited from
more than $61.29 billion in aid to education. In the last fiscal year, the
Lottery generated $3.27 billion in aid to education.
- Helping thousands of businesses grow: More than
17,000 retailers many of which are small businesses sell New York
Lottery products. They earn commissions on Lottery sales, totaling $9.2 billion
since 1967 and $460 million in just the past year. These commissions help
establish the businesses in their respective communities and enable them to
- Enriching millions of New Yorkers: Since 1967,
millions of New Yorkers have shared in $83.6 billion in prizes, including more
than 3,260 instant millionaires. In the last fiscal year alone, players shared
in $4.6 billion, including 90 people who became millionaires thanks to the New
York Lotterys games.
The New York Lottery has become one
of the most iconic brands in existence. New York Lottery slogans, including
All you need is a dollar and a dream, Hey, you never
know and Yeah, THAT kind of rich have become part of New
Yorkers lexicon. The creative and innovative advertising campaigns for
the New York Lottery have left lasting impressions and further solidified the
Lotterys role as a national leader.
Today, the New York Lottery offers
nine separate draw games, including multi-state games that have reached the
billion-dollar prize mark. There are approximately 40 instant
scratch-off games introduced each year. Players may also enjoy
continuous Quick Draw games at nearly 8,000 locations across the state.
About the New York
The New York Lottery continues to be
North Americas largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing $3.27
billion in fiscal year 2016-2017 to help support education in New York State.
The Lotterys contribution represents approximately 14 percent of total
state education aid to local school districts.
New York Lottery revenue is
distributed to local school districts by the same statutory formula used to
distribute other state aid to education. It takes into account both a school
districts size and its income level; larger, lower-income school
districts receive proportionately larger shares of Lottery school funding.

Lottery Sales Grow As Fiscal Year Nears End
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (June 16, 2017)
-- In todays meeting of the Kentucky Lottery Corporations board of
directors, it was announced that sales continue to surge in the final weeks of
Fiscal Year 2017. May turned out to be the third highest sales month in
Kentucky Lottery history, surpassed only by sales from March of this year and
January 2016 when the world-record Powerball jackpot was up for grabs.
For the month of May, sales were
$91.1 million. This is $6.8 million (8%) more than the same month last year,
and $3.1 million (3.5%) more than budget. Scratch-off sales showed a $5.5
million (11%) increase from May 2016 for a total of $56 million, and the
introduction of a new Multiplier feature for the Keno game saw its sales rise
24.8% ($1.5 million) to $7.6 million.
Sales through May were $914.1
million, which is $4.5 million (0.5%) less than the same period last year and
$14.3 million (1.5%) less than budget.
According to Vice President and
Corporate Controller Maggie Garrison, scratch-off tickets have been key to
sales growth. While Powerball sales are down 26.7% through the same
period last year, our Scratch-off products took off with the launch of our Big
Money ticket in April. Big Money, the first oversized ticket offered
by the KY Lottery, was ordered with a quantity that should have lasted 30
weeks. Instead, the $10 ticket sold out in less than three weeks.
In addition, Executive Vice
President & CFO Howard B. Kline reported year-to-date operating expenses
are $2.5 million (8.4%) less than budgeted.
The fact that were
only 0.5% behind last years sales when we saw nothing close to
2016s $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot, meaning sales for that game are now
off $23.8 million compared to last year is a great testament to our
team, said the KLCs President and CEO Tom Delacenserie.
The performance of our products in the closing months of the fiscal
year especially our Scratch-offs has been
Students across the state

- An agreement with The Buntin Group for digital

The next meeting of the KLCs
board of directors will be August 11. The meeting will begin at 10:00 AM EST,
and will be held at the KLC headquarters at 1011 West Main Street in
Louisville. Committee meetings will begin at 8:00 AM EST.

Lottery Teams Up With Cleveland Indians Francisco Lindor for the InspiredOH
Everyday Heroes across Ohio
CLEVELAND, Ohio (June 19, 2017) --
Today, the Ohio Lottery has announced its partnership with Cleveland Indians
shortstop Francisco Lindor for its InspiredOH initiative an effort to
shine a light on the stories of hope and perseverance across the state of Ohio.
For the first time, Lindor will be giving a detailed personal account of how he
has achieved his dreams, and will be asking fellow Ohioans to share their own
inspirational stories for opportunities to win in big and small ways.
Each week in July, the Ohio Lottery
will host giveaways on its social media channels, awarding $50 gift cards for
sharing stories of positivity using the hashtag #InspiredOH. During the month
of August, the Ohio Lottery will roll out additional rewards to those who share
their own stories of positivity, including a chance to have their story
documented in a video by the Ohio Lottery.
"We could not be more excited to
partner with Francisco Lindor, one of today's most inspiring Ohioans, for this
campaign," said Sandy Lesko Sabbath, Deputy Director, Marketing
Communications for the Ohio Lottery. "Francisco's remarkable story of
perseverance exemplifies the InspiredOH initiative. The Ohio Lottery is focused
on creating positive experiences across the state, and we couldn't think of a
better Ohioan, or person, to team up with for this program."
Lindor's fans know him for his
impressive skills on the field, but most are not familiar with his journey to
reach his dreams; overcoming obstacles such as learning a new language, and
supporting his sister through her battle with cancer. Throughout the challenges
he has faced, he's never lost his signature smile and has consequently become a
role model to all around him.
Now fans will get an insider's look
at Lindor's journey to the big leagues and learn more about those who have
helped him achieve the impossible through a documentary produced by the Ohio
Lottery. To support the initiative, the Lottery has launched the website
www.inspiredoh.org, which will feature Lindor's documentary and "Lindorisms"
fun pieces of advice and encouragement for daily life. The website also
features a series of inspirational videos from across the state such as an
Ohio-based horse ranch that raises funds for breast cancer, a small town thrift
shop that supports animal rescue efforts and many more.
The Ohio Lottery has contributed
more than $23 billion toward education. As a strong believer himself that
education can open doors, and to kick off the initiative, Lindor will be making
a personal donation to Minds Matter Cleveland. The 100% volunteer-led,
nonprofit organization provides high-achieving high school students from
low-income backgrounds with academic and mentoring services, along with access
to summer college immersion programs, to assist them in navigating the path to
college and career success.
"As a part of my partnership with
the Ohio Lottery, it's very important to me to be able to give back to my
community. I'll be making a donation to Minds Matter Cleveland to help ensure
that high-performing, low-income students have the resources needed to further
their education. I hope this will positively impact these students and give
them some of the necessary support to achieve success, and help them reach
their goals and dreams," added Lindor.
Throughout its nine-year history,
Minds Matter Cleveland has succeeded in placing each of its graduates into a
four-year college or university, almost all with significant financial aid and

Millennials Love EquiLottery: Its Relevant, Authentic and
KENTUCKY (June 21, 2017) -- When you
start on a journey to create a new lottery category out of whole cloth,
predictability cant be your thing. And relevancy must be at the core of
what you do. Millennials apparently feel the same way about the products they
buy. At least according to our study of 1,853 lottery and non-lottery players
conducted by lottery market research leader Ipsos.
And what could be more relevant to
this generation than the mobile phone? Millennials grew up with these devices
as part of their day to day life. Unlike Generation X and the Baby Boomers
before them, most Millennials dont remember a life without one. And while
many probably have recollections of the first Nokia phones (remember limited
call plans and life before text messaging?) few from this crowd have spent any
significant part of their adult lives without an Android or iPhone.
It should then be without surprise
that they way over indexed on I like the idea of using a mobile app to
find out whether I won when being tested on EquiLottery. To the tune of
more than twice that of Baby Boomers and 27% more than their nearest Gen X
rivals to be precise. Considering the mobile app reveal is the centerpiece of
EquiLottery, we could probably stop this series right now. We are getting kind
Relevancy isnt just a
reflection of what already is. Its being unique enough to predict what
will be. The fact that 71% of Millennials felt EquiLottery was different
than other lottery games shows that they see our game as a new vision for
lottery. Baby Boomers scored a still high 62% but the 9-percentage point
difference between these generations is still a significant enough gap for us
to call out. Nine points in an election is a landslide and its more than a
comfortable margin in a study like ours.
But what really gets us excited
about this portion of the study is the appeal of unpredictability. Were
going to chalk that up to the desire for authenticity that we heard throughout
our six focus groups. Millennials are drawn to live events, not computer
generated knock offs or machines that feel predetermined. The pieces of our
game that make it such a unique offering in comparison to other lottery games
are among the biggest pluses for this generation.
Every day with live horse racing,
the field size is likely to be different. That means our top prize will vary as
well. And the kids dig that difference 21 percentage points more than the Baby
What if you have a horse thats
been scratched from the race at hand? You might think this is a negative for
EquiLottery. Dont worry, Millennials are all in, 16 percentage points
more than the 55 and older crowd in fact.
And what about a race being
cancelled due to weather complications? (No fretting lotteries, we have a
solution to make sure that rarely, if ever happens. We want to make money that
day too.) Isnt that a bridge too far? No way says our 20 and 30something
Americans. Receiving a free ticket for a future play is viewed as a favorable
result by 70% of Millennials, a 13-percentage point bump on Boomers.
Are you starting to see a pattern
here? Millennials arent looking for the same old lottery game. They want
something exciting and they crave authenticity. Bring this generation something
unpredictable that works in their day to day lives and watch them embrace the
lottery in an unprecedented way. Deliver another X out of Y lottery balls game
and continue to lose out on the largest generation in the history of America.
Your pick. No pressure.

deliver significant value for both sets of shareholders and material benefits
to other key stakeholders including Australian racing industries, business
partners, employees, customers and governments.
The combination will bring
together two great Australian businesses, well positioned to invest, innovate
and compete in a global gambling entertainment marketplace.
Tabcorp acknowledges the
support received from many stakeholders, including the racing industry, our
business partners and shareholders. Their backing is an endorsement of the
extensive benefits that the Transaction offers to our stakeholders.
We look forward to
continuing to work with Tatts to successfully complete the Transaction and are
working towards implementation in August 2017."
In granting its authorisation,
the Tribunal stated it is satisfied that the Transaction is likely to result in
substantial public benefits and that the public detriments identified by the

The Tribunals authorisation is
conditional on Tabcorp divesting Odyssey Gaming Services (Odyssey). As
announced on 18 April 2017, Tabcorp has agreed to sell Odyssey to Australian
National Hotels Pty Limited, a subsidiary of Federal Group (subject to the
Transaction becoming effective). Tabcorp has given to the ACCC an undertaking
to divest Odyssey which the ACCC has said is acceptable to it. The ACCC has
also approved the proposed purchaser.
Following today's announcement by
the Tribunal, Tabcorp is pleased to provide an update on the Transaction.
Synergies and business
Tabcorp continues to expect the
Transaction to deliver at least $130m p.a. of EBITDA from synergies and
business improvements. These earnings are expected to be realised in the first
full year following completion of the integration of the businesses.
Approvals and indicative
Tabcorp is well advanced in securing
the regulatory, industry and government approvals necessary for the
implementation of the Scheme.
Tabcorp expects the Tatts Scheme
First Court Hearing to be scheduled for mid-July 2017, with the Scheme Booklet
to be dispatched by Tatts shortly thereafter. A report to Tatts shareholders by
an independent expert will accompany the Scheme Booklet.
It is expected that a meeting for
Tatts shareholders to consider the Scheme will be held in August 2017.
Implementation is expected to occur thereafter, subject to the receipt of the

expected to reduce the risk associated with the integration, which will include
a thorough review of the cost bases of both companies.
The UK start-up business Sun Bets is

Malta Gaming Authority Publishes a Survey into the Consumption of Gaming
Services by Maltese Residents
By Malta Gaming Authority
MALTA (June 21, 2017) -- The Malta
Gaming Authority (MGA) has for the first time published a survey into the
consumption of gaming services by Maltese residents, including economic and
social considerations. The scientific survey was carried out between 2015 and
2016 and provides a fair assessment of gambling behaviours in Malta. It also
gives a clearer picture on the level of problem gambling in Malta.
The survey was announced and
published during a press conference held at Castille and addressed by
Parliamentary Secretary for Financial Services, Digital Economy and Innovation
Silvio Schembri and MGA Executive Chairman Joseph Cuschieri.
The Parliamentary Secretary said
that this survey was needed in order to fully understand the effect of gambling
behaviour on the social life of the Maltese population, as well as
understanding the economic impact this has on their everyday life.
Whilst recognising the positive
effects of the iGaming industry on the Maltese economy, Silvio Schembri
stressed the importance of the government's role in devising policies to
safeguard this activity without impacting our society negatively. The
Parliamentary Secretary also mentioned the important work carried out by the
Responsible Gaming Foundation which launched a series of initiatives to help
people with gambling problems, such as the 1777 helpline and self-barring
forms. Silvio Schembri also thanked the Malta Gaming Authority for this
initiative, which will provide a scientific basis for policies aimed at helping
people who have gambling problems.
MGA Executive Chairman Joseph
Cuschieri highlighted the importance of this survey, "For the first time we
are publishing a scientific survey which clearly articulates the gambling
behaviours of the Maltese population. This should help all stakeholders to
shape policies based on scientific data rather than impressions or myths hence
a more informed debate about the economic and social effects of gambling in
Malta. The survey also gives size and scale of potential gambling addiction
problems in Malta".
Key highlights from the survey
- Gaming services have become an essential component
of household recreational activities. This entails a contribution to economic
activity, and needs to be managed in a way which does not impinge upon the
sustainability of lifestyles;
- The Maltese population is estimated to have spent
around 125 million in gaming services during 2015, equivalent to around
2.8% of total household consumption expenditure;
- National Lottery games are the most prevalent form
of gaming, closely followed by expenditure on gaming parlours and outlets;
- Around 195,300 persons are estimated to have spent
money on some form of gaming activity in 2015, which is close to 56% of the
population aged 18 years and over. The average weekly expenditure by these
persons stood at 12.30. Around 46% of the population engages in games
available for free;
- The persons who engage in paid gaming activities
are most likely those who are aged 45 and over, having an educational
attainment up to secondary level and not active in the labour market;
- In general, around 1% to 2% of the population
(which can vary between 2,000 and 4,000 persons) who acquire gaming services
for payment report some type of adverse effect between gaming activity and
lifestyle. The findings of this study indicate that problems associated with
gaming activities undertaken through regular channels are relatively contained.
This is in line with the trends in other EU jurisdictions;
- This implies that, more likely than not, more
extensive and serious problems associated with gambling would be emanating
primarily from illegal activities;
- NGOs involved in social issues in relation to
gambling emphasise the need for further resources to be dedicated to training
of professionals in the area of gambling addictions;
- In line with these considerations, responsible
gambling remains a top priority in guiding the MGA's regulatory ethos and
policy objectives. Furthermore, more action is planned to tackle illegal
gambling activities in Malta.
Anyone wishing to receive the
complete version of the survey may send an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
