Interim Report T2/2017: Veikkaus Has Over Two Million Loyal Customers

ESPOO, Finland (September 21, 2017) -- The new Veikkaus, which begun its operations at the beginning of 2017, has made a good start. Merging the operations has required a great deal of the company’s resources, but we have still managed to develop our financial result according to plan. The number of Veikkaus’ registered loyal customers went up to over two million during the period under review.

  • Turnover EUR 2 107.1 million (-0.5%*).
  • Result EUR 665.7 million (-3.3%).
  • The turnover of Slot Machine and Instant Games, as well as that of Skill Games showed positive development. In Lucky Games, the turnover decreased as a result of a smaller number of jackpots available.
  • We have already over two million loyal customers. Over 40% of our customers play identified.

The period under review got a great climax, as we passed the milestone of two million registered loyal customers. That represents about one two thirds of the adult Finns engaging in gaming,” says Veikkaus’ President and CEO Olli Sarekoski.

At the end of the period, Veikkaus had a total of 2 012 million registered loyal customers in its customer base. The share of identified gaming reached 40.3% during the period (+2.8 percentage points).

Increasing identified gaming is one of Veikkaus’ most important strategic goals. It enables us to offer our customers even better, service-oriented customer experiences, together with all the tools necessary for responsible gaming,” says Sarekoski.

Great start of the year for Slot Machine and Instant Games, and Skill Games

Veikkaus games fall into three business operation groups, the largest of which is that of Slot Machine and Instant Games. The Slot Machine and Instant Games** posted a turnover of EUR 801.6 million (+4.2%) in the period between January and August. The biggest product launch during the period under review was that of Kulta-Jaska 2 game both as a slot machine game and in the web service The launch was the most successful of all times in the game’s specific product group.

The turnover of Lucky Games** was EUR 764.0 million (-8.2%) in the period between January and August. The fall can be explained by the jackpot levels in Eurojackpot and Vikinglotto that were lower than in the previous year, as well as by a smaller number of draws in Lotto, Eurojackpot, and the Jokeri games. Vikinglotto went through one of the greatest revisions in the game’s history in May, which has received positive responses from the players.

Skill Games** attained a turnover of EUR 541.5 million (+ 5.2%) between January and August. Fixed odds games have posted solid growth during the year (+16.0%). In addition, the turnover of Football Pools showed extremely favourable development during the summertime third (+11.1%). The turnover of the toto games went down by 0.5%. The increase in the number of customers that followed the launch of the new web store has stabilized, and there are currently ca. 40% more customers than before the launch.

Webstore has over half a million players a week

The players have welcomed the renewed webstore that was opened in April, with the service already attracting over 550 000 players every week. After the extensive reform, we have focused on improving the user interfaces, services, and games. During the next phase of the reform, we will combine the two different game accounts, the Game Account and the Casino Account. At the same time, we will make the tools for gaming control uniform. The gaming control tools are a service where the players can follow and control their gaming.

Result attainable

Scientific Games

Merging the operations of the three old gaming operators will affect the company’s result due to non-recurring integration expenses. However, Veikkaus believes that the projected profit for 2017, recorded in the State Budget, EUR 1 014.3 million, is attainable. The proceeds will be distributed to beneficiaries in their entirety. Art, sports, science, and youth work will receive 53% of the funds; organizations operating within social affairs and health will receive 43%; and equestrian sports and horse breeding will receive 4%.

* Total: Fintoto, Finland’s Slot Machine Association, and Veikkaus, whose gaming operations were merged on 1 January 2017.

** Slot Machine and Instant Games include slot machines and digital slot machines, scratchcards and digital eInstants, as well as digital eBingo games and draw games of high event frequency. Lucky Games include the weekly drawn games Lotto, Eurojackpot, and Vikinglotto, as well as their add-on games Jokeri and Lomatonni. They also include the daily drawn games Keno and Kaikki tai ei mitään. Skill Games include fixed odds betting games: Fixed Odds Betting and Live Betting; the parimutuel betting games Multibet, Result Odds Betting, and Winner Odds Betting, Football Pools, the Toto games, and Table games.

About Veikkaus

Veikkaus is a Finnish gaming company with a special mission. We want people to play our games safely and with moderation.

Pollard Banknote Recognized for Its Industry-Leading Printed Products

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Canada (September 21, 2017) -- Pollard Banknote Limited (TSX: PBL) (“Pollard Banknote”) is proud to announce that it is the recipient of several awards from the Printing Industries of America (PIA), which were presented at the 2017 Premier Print Awards Gala in Chicago, Illinois on Sunday, September 10. This recognition is testament to Pollard Banknote’s expertise in providing quality products to its lottery customers. Among thousands of submissions from around the world, Pollard Banknote’s products were the only lottery tickets selected, demonstrating the company’s position in the market as a provider of products recognized for their quality both in the lottery industry and the broader print industry.

The Premier Print Awards Competition, organized by the Printing Industries of America (PIA), recognizes the highest-quality print products in various categories. Each year, only the most worthy pieces receive Awards of Recognition, Certificates of Merit, and Best of Category awards.

Pollard Banknote’s €20 Million Calendar ticket printed for Loterie Nationale de Belgique received the “They Said It Couldn’t Be Done” Best of Category award. This game marked the first time a ticket was printed with Pollard Banknote’s patented Scratch FX® and Scratch Tab™ innovations in combination, all on an oversize 8” x 11” ticket. This combination of industry-leading innovations demonstrates Pollard Banknote’s innovative spirit, which allows the company to offer its lottery customers continued opportunities to stand out in the marketplace.

In addition to doubling up on innovations, Million Calendar doubled up on awards, receiving a Certificate of Merit for “Special Innovation Awards -- Other”. Two other Pollard Banknote tickets also received Certificate of Merit awards. Western Canada Lottery Corporation’s $5 Candy Cane Cash Times 10 ticket received a Certificate of Merit in the “Specialty Inks or Coatings, Fragrances, or ‘Invisible’ Printing Inks” category for its use of peppermint scented ink combined with the sheen of Pollard Banknote’s patented Scratch FX®.

The other Pollard Banknote product recognized with a Certificate of Merit was Veikkaus’s (The National Lottery of Finland) 100V Raha-arpa, celebrating Finland’s hundred years of independence, which received the award in the “Flexographic Printing” category. The ticket’s highly complex flexographic design featured nine unique images depicting Finland’s past and present, helping the Lottery usher in a successful €20 ticket launch. “This special game has met with tremendous acceptance and success from Veikkaus’ player base,” said Riitta Mesilaakso-Lehtola, Product Manager for Veikkaus. “The ticket design had to be exceptional and we knew that we could count on Pollard Banknote to deliver.

Flexographic printing is a widely used process not just for lottery products, but throughout the print industry, and for Pollard Banknote to be recognized among the multitudes of other printers recognizes the company’s ability to produce world-class, high-quality products while managing the complexities required for lottery ticket production.

Pollard Banknote is excited to be recognized for several of our latest innovative tickets,” said Murielle Fontaine, Director, Game Management & Design. “Our company has had a reputation for being a leader in the lottery market for decades. Now our products are shining across the greater print industry thanks to the PIA awards, which have honoured us with a Best of Category award, as well as recognized us for our capabilities among thousands of flexographic printers producing products for numerous industries.

Missouri Lottery Makes Its Second-Largest Contribution To Public Education

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri (September 15, 2017) -- Today the Missouri Lottery made its second-highest monthly proceeds transfer in its 31-year history, worth more than $35.5 million, thanks in part to the second-highest ever Powerball jackpot run that ended in August. The September transfer of $35,539,117 is based on sales in August, and brings the FY18 total to more than $78.7 million.

The Powerball jackpot run that ended Aug. 23 generated more than $12.6 million for education,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director for the Missouri Lottery.

Not only are high jackpots a lot of fun for players, but they also ramp up contributions to education.”

Since Missouri Lottery sales started in 1986, the Lottery has generated more than $5.8 billion for the state and public education. Annual Lottery proceeds comprise about 4 percent of the state’s funding for public education – an effort shared by local, state and federal governments.

Prior to each fiscal year, the Lottery averages the most recent five years’ profits for a “benchmark” and increases that amount by 1 percent to arrive at a prudent goal for the next fiscal year.

Programs currently funded in FY18 include the A+ Scholarship Program, the Foundation Program and Access Missouri, among many others.

In addition to providing funds for public education, the Lottery also benefits the state by collecting state taxes on prizes of more than $600. During FY17, the Lottery collected $3.6 million in state tax withholdings, along with another $664,000 in debt offsets for back taxes, child support, public defender fees and other state agency debts.

For complete information about Missouri Lottery proceeds, including maps of proceeds by program and by county, see the “Where the $ Goes” section at

Players who won a prize in the Missouri Lottery’s “Winner Wonderland” Scratchers game, number 128, which officially ended March 29, have until Sept. 25 to claim those prizes.

Atlantic Lottery Returns $422 million in Profit for 2016-2017; Exceeds Target by $6.5 million

  • Atlantic Lottery profits exceeded target by $6.5 million at $422 million.
  • Fourth time in company history profit surpassed $400 million mark.
  • All provinces exceeded budget, except in Newfoundland and Labrador, where economic factors resulted in the provincial profit target being missed by $2 million.

CHARLOTTETOWN (P.E.I.) – Atlantic Lottery President and CEO Brent Scrimshaw released the corporation’s 2016-2017 annual report and financial results today at a luncheon hosted by the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce.

In fiscal year 2016-17, I’m proud to share that Atlantic Lottery profits exceeded target at $422 million,” Scrimshaw said. “Our profit trajectory, largely the result of operational improvements, now sees us returning $60 million dollars more per year than we were just five years ago.”

Scrimshaw added: “Of course, overall profit is a big part of the story but it’s not the whole story. We experienced some challenges this year: slowing economies, increased competition, and the accelerating shift to digital gaming – a channel in which we are not yet fully product competitive.”

Corporate Financial Overview

Profit Earned By Province

 Looking Ahead

The profit growth we’ve experienced over the past five years has not been by accident; it’s because of a company-wide commitment to reinvention and renewal,” said Scrimshaw. “In addition to celebrating the 145,000 wins we see every day, we are responsibly changing our game roster and expanding the space in which we operate. At the same time, we are investing in technology and developing fresh and diverse products. Investment in innovation and commitment from employees are what’s driving us.”

Scrimshaw added: “This month we will begin to see some of the results of those efforts as we launch new gaming and financial systems on a modernized infrastructure. With these systems in place, the company is now well positioned to look to the future, providing the level of services and product innovations required for success.

This time next year, Atlantic Lottery will report on new games and improved player experiences that are being launched in 2017-18.

"It's been a great three months since joining The Stars Group and the team is energized," said Brian Kyle, Chief Financial Officer. "As I am now fully familiar with our forecasting and given our solid trends across all business lines, which reinforce our conviction and commitment to our strategy, it is now appropriate to update our financial guidance. Such guidance is also now based on a Euro to U.S. dollar exchange rate of 1.18 to 1.00 and all other currencies at their average exchange rate for the month of August, in each case for the remainder of 2017, unaudited expected results and certain accounting assumptions.
