Kentucky Lottery Sales Break the One Billion Dollar Level in FY17

LOUISVILLE, KY (July 5, 2017) -- For the first time in its 28-year history, sales of Kentucky Lottery tickets have exceeded a billion dollars in a single fiscal year.

For FY17 which ended June 30, overall lottery sales were $1,000,501,000. This is the largest sales figure in Kentucky Lottery history, and surpasses last year’s record-breaking number by $3.2 million (0.3%).

Scratch-off tickets once again were the largest individual game category, finishing the year at $603.8 million. This is a $6.5 million (1.1%) increase from the previous year, and was led in large part due to the successful launch of Kentucky’s first oversized scratch off ticket. Called “Big Money”, the $10 ticket was ordered with a quantity that should have lasted 30 weeks. Instead, it sold out in less than three weeks.

Keno saw the largest percentage increase of any game, rising 15% ($9.8 million) to $75.7 million. The increase was due to several changes made to the game, including shortening the time between drawings from five to four minutes and the inclusion of a new multiplier feature.

Daily draw games continued to perform strongly, as Pick 3 sales rose to $145.3 million (up 4.1%), Pick 4 sales rose to $44.6 million (up 4.7%), and Cash Ball 225 sales rose to $10.4 million (up 6.8%).

Powerball sales dropped significantly from the previous year. “Without anything even remotely close to the $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot we saw in January 2016, sales for that game were down 23.6%,” said the Lottery’s President and CEO Tom Delacenserie. “Despite the $22.3 million decline in sales for just this game, the fact that we not only broke our all-time sales record but also the billion threshold is remarkable.

Transfers to the Commonwealth were also at a record level - $251.6 million, an increase of $2.5 million.

The Virginia Lottery Team Wraps Up Award-Winning Season

Campaign to thank teachers receives two prestigious National Silver Anvils from the Public Relations Society of America

RICHMOND, Virginia  (June 30, 2017) -- The Virginia Lottery, along with its PR partner Padilla, was honored with a pair of 2017 Silver Anvil Awards from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) on June 8.

The annual event held in New York City honors organizations that have successfully addressed a contemporary public relations issue with exemplary professional skill, creativity, and resourcefulness.

Silver Anvil Judges evaluate entries for their strategic nature of public relations programs using four key components — research, planning, execution, and evaluation.

The Lottery’s innovative Thank a Teacher campaign garnered the anvils in the Community Relations and Events and Observances (more than seven days) categories for government organizations.

The campaign encouraged the public to send thank-you notes to K-12 school teachers they value, while highlighting the fact that all lottery profits support K-12 education in Virginia. Qualifying teachers who received a thank-you note could enter a drawing for a chance to win a Virginia vacation from the Virginia Tourism Corporation. More than 30,000 print and digital notes were sent to teachers with the help of the Virginia PTA.

The Lottery also won 12 trophies at the Virginia Public Relations Awards ceremony in May from PRSA Richmond including the Best in Show Award.

The Best in Show Commonwealth Award was for internal communications and the campaign “Virginia Lottery ‘Smooves’ into New Headquarters.” This campaign engaged Lottery employees as the entire office staff, the public-facing Prize Zone and massive computer operations moved to Main Street Centre in downtown Richmond.

Gambling Commission Unveils New Enforcement Strategy

BIRMINGHAM, UK (July 5, 2017) -- The Gambling Commission has unveiled a new enforcement strategy which will be used to tackle operators who breach gambling regulations. 

The new strategy, which comes into force today, follows the Commission’s consultation: Changes to our enforcement strategy: putting the consumer first.

Key changes include:

  • Changes to the Commission’s statement on financial penalties including introducing higher penalties for breaches, particularly where it sees systemic and repeated failings
  • Putting all regulatory tools, including licence review (both of the operator and personal management licences), on an equal footing by removing the current bias in favour of settlement (1)
  • Using time-limited discounts to create better incentives for early settlement.

Maryland Casinos Generate $130.5 Million in Revenue During June

Ocean Downs, Hollywood Casino Perryville, Rocky Gap see increases from June 2016

BALTIMORE, Maryland (July 5, 2017) – Maryland Lottery and Gaming today announced June 2017 revenue numbers for the state’s six casinos: Hollywood Casino Perryville in Cecil County, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore in Baltimore City, Casino at Ocean Downs in Worcester County, Maryland Live Casino in Anne Arundel County, Rocky Gap Casino Resort in Allegany County and MGM National Harbor in Prince George’s County. Maryland’s casinos totaled $130,480,062 in revenue during June 2017 – an increase of $37,114,143, or 39.8%, compared to the June 2016 figure of $93,365,919.

In a year-to-year comparison not including MGM National Harbor, which opened on Dec. 8, 2016, statewide casino revenue in June 2017 decreased by $13,021,491, or 13.9%.

MGM National Harbor generated $50,135,634 from both slot machines and table games in June. Gross gaming revenue per unit per day in June at MGM National Harbor was: $270.72 for slot machines, $5,944.57 for banked table games and $1,403.47 for non-banked table games. MGM National Harbor operates 3,126 slot machines and 168 (129 banked and 39 non-banked) table games.

Maryland Live Casino totaled $41,840,229 from both slot machines and table games in June. Maryland Live’s gross gaming revenue per unit per day was: $231.02 for slot machines, $2,898.72 for banked table games and $739.63 for non-banked table games. June 2017 revenue at Maryland Live decreased by $11,859,126, or 22.1%, from June 2016. Maryland Live Casino operates 3,978 slot machines and 202 (150 banked and 52 non-banked) table games.

Horseshoe Casino Baltimore generated $22,096,012 from both slot machines and table games in June. Gross gaming revenue per unit per day was: $192.95 for slot machines, $1,945.47 for banked table games and $522.46 for non-banked table games. Horseshoe Casino’s June 2017 revenue decreased by $2,350,941, or 9.6%, from June 2016. Horseshoe Casino Baltimore operates 2,202 slot machines and 178 (153 banked and 25 non-banked) table games.

Hollywood Casino Perryville generated $6,337,130 from both slot machines and table games in June. Gross gaming revenue per unit per day was: $218.75 for slot machines, $2,363.48 for banked table games and $369.92 for non-banked table games. Hollywood Casino’s June 2017 revenue increased by $350,134, or 5.8%, from June 2016. Hollywood Casino Perryville operates 822 slot machines and 20 (12 banked and 8 non-banked) table games.

Casino at Ocean Downs generated $5,550,673 from slot machines in June, and its gross gaming revenue per unit per day was $230.94. Casino at Ocean Downs’ June 2017 revenue increased by $482,118, or 9.5%, from June 2016. Casino at Ocean Downs operates 800 slot machines and does not have table games.

Rocky Gap Casino Resort generated $4,520,385 from both slot machines and table games in June. Gross gaming revenue per unit per day was: $195.92 for slot machines and $1,199.10 for banked table games. This facility does not have non-banked table games. Rocky Gap Casino Resort’s June 2017 revenue increased by $356,326, or 8.6%, from June 2016. Rocky Gap Casino Resort operates 663 slot machines and 17 banked table games.

Under Maryland law, casino revenue supports the Maryland Education Trust Fund as well as small-, minority- and women-owned businesses, local impact grants, local jurisdictions and the state’s horse racing industry. The Florida Lottery’s Summer Ezmatch™ Promotion Turns Up the Heat with Higher Instant Cash Prizes!

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (July 3, 2017) -- The Florida Lottery’s summer EZmatch™ promotion is back! For a limited time, players who add EZmatch to their FANTASY 5® or LUCKY MONEY™ purchases can instantly win higher cash prizes of up to $1,000.

From Monday, July 3, through Sunday, September 3, 2017, the EZmatch top prize will double from $500 to $1,000 and the second prize from $250 to $500. The Malta Gaming Authority Signs MoU with the E-sports Integrity Coalition

MALTA (June 30, 2017) -- The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has entered into a collaborative Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the E-sports Integrity Coalition (ESIC), in the interests of protecting and maintaining the integrity of e-sports and e-sports betting.

The aim of this MoU is to foster cooperation between the two entities to avoid the manipulation of e-sports events and competitions, whereby the MGA in collaboration with its licensed operators shall provide information on suspicious betting patterns to assist ESIC with the investigation of such patterns or insider betting connected with e-sports events and competitions.

ESIC Integrity Commissioner Ian Smith said:

We are delighted that the Malta Gaming Authority has agreed to work with us in making e-sports a safer wagering environment. The MGA is a very highly respected regulator of sports betting and it has been a pleasure developing this information sharing mechanism with them. Drug Free Sport New Zealand Announce New Chief Executive

NEW ZEALAND (July 4, 2017) -- Drug Free Sport New Zealand (DFSNZ) Board Chair Justice Warwick Gendall is pleased to announce the appointment of Nick Paterson to the role of DFSNZ Chief Executive, effective from July 31.

Following an extensive search, which considered candidates from New Zealand and overseas, Paterson stood out from a number of strong applicants and replaces long-standing chief executive Graeme Steel.

Justice Gendall says the high calibre of applicants made for a very difficult decision.

"Nick won the role due to his vast experience in both integrity and regulatory environments. Together with his investigative skills we believe Nick’s expertise will add to our strengths and existing agency expertise across the anti-doping sector"

Before joining DFSNZ, he was General Manager, Investigations at the Serious Fraud Office and has been on secondment as the Executive Director of the Gambling Commission since October 2016. Prior to that Mr Paterson was Executive Director/NZ Lead, Fraud Investigation and Dispute Services at Ernst & Young.

The timing of Mr Paterson’s appointment means that he will be able to guide the organisation through a season of change.

“DFSNZ is focusing on a range of ‘Good Clean Sport’ initiatives including regulatory, education and investigative strategies to ensure closer collaboration with stakeholders across New Zealand’s sporting community. We have full confidence that Nick has what it takes to do an excellent job,” Justice Gendall says.

“Governing legislation demands that we must first and foremost be a very efficient regulator and our athlete and supporting group education will have high priority.

“Nick has also represented New Zealand’s interests on the world stage, leading the successful NZ delegation to the OECD Working Group on Bribery in Paris and represented NZ at APEC, so his international credentials stack up as well. We are confident Nick is the right person to lead DFSNZ and represent our interests both here at home and overseas.”

Mr Paterson says he is thrilled to be appointed the new Chief Executive of DFSNZ.

“Sport enriches the lives of so many New Zealanders, and I’m passionate about working with the expert team at DFSNZ and the wider sporting community to ensure greater awareness about anti-doping and clean sport,” Mr Paterson says.

Gambling Commission Raises Standards with New Conditions for Online Operators

BIRMINGHAM, U.K. (June 29, 2017) -- New regulations aimed at ensuring online operators offer all consumers in Britain the same tools to monitor their gambling have been introduced.

Following a consultation earlier this year, new measures will enhance protections in place by helping consumers make informed decisions about their online gambling activity.

The new requirements mean remote operators must:

  • ensure consumers are able to directly access 3 months’ worth of account and gambling information, with a minimum period of 12 months available on request
  • ensure account and gambling history provides easy to understand totals for a defined period (for example, the ability to be able to view transaction history for the previous two months)
  • give consumers access to information about their net deposits (ie the running total of all deposits minus the sum of all withdrawals)
  • allow consumers to set financial limits across their entire gambling account as well as individual games.

 

Sharon McNair, programme director at the Gambling Commission said: “Consumers must be able to make informed decisions about their online gambling activity.

The findings of our recent consultation indicate that there are differences in approach amongst licensees in relation to the level of information available to their consumers and the ease by which that information is accessible. The new requirements seek to address this and ensure greater consistency in the information available to consumers regardless of who they choose to gamble with.

Gambling operators must see beyond the bottom line, and ensure both new and existing gambling products are effectively managing the risks to the licensing objectives, keeping gambling safe and fair for all.”

An updated remote gambling and software technical standards is now published, but operators have until 1 April 2018 to ensure the above requirements have been implemented. There are a number of additional requirements concerning information displayed to players that will come into effect 1 October 2017.

Mrs McNair added: “Innovation and technological advancement continues to drive growth in the £4.5billion a year online gambling market. We are seeing operators developing new gambling products and technologies every day – something that it is vital to the further advancement of the sector.

But as the industry transforms, operators are reminded that we too will continue to adapt our regulation to raise standards across all gambling sectors and enhance the protections available for consumers.”
