Jackpots to Become More Mega When Game Changes

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (August 21, 2017) -- Changes are coming this October to Mega Millions®, the draw game beloved nationally, but especially in Arkansas, who saw a $177 million Mega Millions® winner come forth in April.

Key benefits for players with the forthcoming changes include better odds at winning $1 million, higher average jackpots, and faster-growing jackpots with $5 million minimum rolls. (See accompanying chart.) The biggest change may be that Mega Millions® jackpots will start at $40 million, more than double the current $15 million.

The cost of a Mega Millions® ticket will increase from $1 to $2 per play, but the Megaplier® cost will remain at an additional $1 per play. For players who like to buy several draws in advance, a gradual stepdown of the availability of future draws in the current version of Mega Millions® begins after the draw tomorrow night. From that point on, the number of future draws available for the present game will decrease with each draw – all leading to the new game change on Saturday, Oct. 28. The first drawing for the new modified game will be Tuesday, Oct. 31.

This is the first price adjustment in the Mega Millions® game since Arkansas started selling it in 2002.

With Mega Millions® going to $40 million starting jackpots, the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery will be offering huge jackpots – at least $40 million – four nights a week,” said Lottery Director Bishop Woosley.

Mega Millions® drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday. The game is currently offered in 44 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Washington D.C.

In Arkansas a higher percentage of profits from draw games like Mega Millions® goes to scholarships, which means more financial help for Arkansas students,” Woosley said.

New Lottery Terminals for Lotto Baden-Württemberg Outlets

BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG, Germany (August 18, 2017) -- Playing lottery on the Internet is the trend. Despite this, the receiving agencies are still generating the vast majority of the games. The approximately 3,200 sales partners in Baden-Württemberg are now working with new terminal devices. The state-owned Toto-Lotto GmbH invested around twelve million euros for the conversion.

"The acceptance points are the backbone of Lotto and remain the most important distribution channel. We strengthen our partners and invest in the future of state-owned lotteries," emphasized Lotto CEO Marion Caspers-Merk with a view to the recently completed equipment of all around 3,200 acceptance points in Baden-Württemberg with new terminals. The devices contain a camera for fast and precise recording of the playing cards.

Scientific Games

Thanks to a large display as well as a simple and modern menu, they are user-friendly for the personnel and offer further advantages - from the handling of the daily business to the training of the sales partners.

Tippers can use their new technology to pre-order their playing cards and thus, for example, before the holiday the desired drawing.

In addition, the current generation of devices is bridging further bridges between analogue and digital world. The last exchange of the terminals in the Baden-Württemberg lottery acceptance points had been between 2006 and 2007.

Approach sites earn lion's share of gaming missions

Even in the age of booming online trade, the lottery accepting points in Baden-Württemberg earn by far the largest portion of the games. In the first half of 2017, more than 90 percent of total deployments of 474 million euros were accounted for by this distribution channel.

Last but not least, the state lottery company strengthens the partners at the acceptance points with a variety of measures. Two years ago, for example, the first so-called premium acceptance center was opened in the south-west. This represents the ideal type for customers, the general public and other sales partners.

The premium acceptance points are also visually distinguished and are thus recognizable for customers. Among other things, a uniform, modern design and a special technical equipment. In the meantime there are 27 of these premium acceptance centers across the country,

Investing also in the online game

Parallel to the modernization of the acceptance points, Lotto Baden-Württemberg is also continuously investing in its online sales channels. A year ago, the fundamentally revised Internet appearance, which is characterized by a clear structure and a responsive design, started.

Parallel to the homepage lotto-bw.de the official lottery app was also revised. It is available for both Android and iOS, and offers comprehensive additional information such as winning numbers, odds, current jackpots and acceptance deadlines.

By the turn of the year 2017/18 the introduction of a digital customer card is planned, in order to interlink the online and offline world still more strongly.

Furthermore, the lottery app will soon be able to scan the game receipts produced by the receiving terminal so that they can be checked for profits.

Australia

Continuing improvements to online marketing and the OzLotteries.com App has helped deliver growth on a like-for-like Jackpot basis, which compares sales over a number of years for a particular Jackpot level. The OzLotteries.com App recently reached an average 5-star rating as voted by consumers.

chart

A number of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are used to monitor customer activity underpinning ticket sales and revenue through ozlotteries.com

  FY 2017 FY2016
Number of new online accounts 161k 206k
Cost per lead $17.09 $15.13
Number of active online customers 354k 376k
Average spend per active online customer $348.40 $335.27

The KPIs were adversely affected by the 31% lower number of Jackpots, however the average spend per active online customer actually increased due to the product mix between the 3 main products (OzLotto, Powerball and Saturday Lotto) as well as a positive contribution from additional sales of Charity games.

Charity Lotteries

Sales of Charity lotteries have more than tripled to $3.8 million over the past 12 months due to better product integration into the website and app as well as portfolio expansion. The Mater Prize Home has been added in the past year bringing the total number of charities to five. The games now include the Mater Prize Home, Surf Life Saving Lotteries, Endeavour Foundation, Act for Kids and the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation.

Interestingly, Charity lotteries have been most successful with the younger demographic enhancing OzLotteries.com reputation as the lottery app for the younger generation.

Returning to Darling Harbour and the ICC Sydney is a Winner for AGE 2017

SYDNEY, Australia (August 17, 2017) -- The Australasian Gaming Expo’s return to where it started 28 years ago at Darling Harbour, has been an outstanding success.

The return of this event to Darling Harbour and the halls of the new exhibition centre created the most successful event in the history of the AGE” said Ross Ferrar, CEO of the Gaming Technologies Association, which hosted the Expo.

This year there were 246 exhibitors, with 60 more than what we had last year” and thanks to the generous and well designed loading docks at the new venue, “exhibitors reported that the bump-in for this massive event went smoothly and that the facilities were superior to anything else they’d experienced” Ross continued.

AGE 2017

This year saw a massive increase in visitors with the final count of 8,099 representing a 19% increase over 2016.

Once they were at the show, visitors were able to optimise their time at the event because for the first time the Expo featured digital show bags, which allowed visitors to transfer information about exhibitors to their mobile device.

In my view, Digital Show Bags are a great success. There’s been a total of 11,967 badge “taps” at exhibitors’ stands during the first 2 days and 3,956 ‘daily digest’ emails sent to those who tapped” said Ross Ferrar.

The Australasian Gaming Expo has exhibitors from broad spectrum of hospitality suppliers. Caterers were well represented at this year’s show with Riva Ice Cream serving over 4,000 tubs of ice cream and CEO Jeff Cantor saying that “the volume of visitors seemed to be 30% up on last year and we had a particularly good showing from the hotel groups”, while around the corner at the Commercial Kitchen Company, Robert Van den Bergh commented that he too had given away about 4,000 slices of Pizza and “we achieved distribution agreements in Tasmania and New Zealand, directly as a result of the show as well as selling 6 pizza systems”.

Being a fully self-contained convention centre, the ICC allowed all associated events and functions to be held on-site and one such function was the Industry Leader’s Dinner and for the attendees, “this event was extraordinary – from the dazzling décor, to the impeccable service, to the outstanding food” continued Ross Ferrar.

Guests were very pleasantly surprised on arrival and their evening got better with every moment. Given the high profile of the guests, it was important that they would find the event memorable, as well as of high quality. The success of the event was assured as the staff of

the ICC had “bought in” to that mission, which was obvious as guests were indeed be discussing ICC Sydney’s excellence while attending the AGE on the Thursday morning.

Visitors were able to broaden their knowledge about hospitality and gaming with 1400 seats available across 7 complimentary seminars covering the latest developments in Venues, Technology, Research and Cash Management. These seminars were held in the new purpose built seminar rooms bristling with technology, with every session being well attended.

AGE 2017

One such event was the Women in Gaming luncheon. This event was hosted by Nadine Grinblat, the Chief Executive of the Australasian Gaming Council who commented “A superlative, down to earth interview between local media identities Stephanie Brantz and Emma Freedman - as well as amazing hospitality from ICC Sydney - set the tone for elegantly relaxed but purposeful networking.”

The event was about connecting like minds and people across sectors to discuss how the gaming industry can be even more progressive - not just as individual businesses but as a collaborative community that values diversity and gender equality in both staff and leadership” Nadine added.

Proving itself to be a world class event, the Australasian Gaming Expo attracted visitors from 26 countries with strong showings from the USA, UK, and more than 50 senior executives from Asia. Many overseas visitors were in awe of the standard of the new venue and the high standard of professionalism of the event’s management.

Next year’s Expo will be held from the 14th to the 16th of August, 2018 and more information is available at www.austgamingexpo.com. Exhibitors who are interested in attending next year can contact Judy Rayner at sales@raynersalesmarketing.com.au

Note: The Australasian Gaming Expo is a trade exhibition, for management representatives of Gaming Industry Organisations only including government, regulatory, research and support bodies, clubs, hotels, casinos, resorts and similar Hospitality Industry venues. Trade suppliers are not eligible to attend the event unless exhibiting.

California Governor Signs Tribal State Gaming Compacts

SACRAMENTO, California (August 17, 2017) --  Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced that he has signed tribal-state gaming compacts between the State of California and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Jamul Indian Village, the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians and the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, as well as an amendment to the current tribal-state gaming compact with the Yurok Tribe.

The terms of the new compacts regarding licensing, compliance enforcement, mitigation of off-reservation impacts and protections for patrons and employees are consistent with recent compacts. The regulatory provisions reflect the professionalism of the tribes' regulators and their constructive relationship with state gaming regulators. The new compacts strengthen government-to-government relations at the local level by providing incentives for tribal funding to local jurisdictions for fire, emergency medical services, law enforcement, public transit, infrastructure improvements, education and other essential services. They also promote tribal investments that provide a mutual benefit to the tribe and the local community. These investments may include renewable energy, recycling or water conservation projects, non-gaming-related economic development and health care facilities.

Two of the compacts - Pechanga and Yocha Dehe - establish the new California Native American Education and Scholarship Fund. This fund recognizes that investment in educational programs and opportunities is essential to the overall health and welfare of all Californians, and is inspired by the belief that a college education not only improves the quality of an individual's life but also engenders broad social, economic and political benefits. It is intended to ensure that Native American youth from tribes without substantial gaming revenue have the financial support to pursue and obtain undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. Each of the new compacts also provides significant additional revenue to the Revenue Sharing Trust Fund, which distributes gaming revenue to non-gaming and limited gaming tribes so that the economic benefits of gaming reach all tribal governments within California.

The compact with Agua Caliente reflects the unique relationship between the tribe and Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage and Cathedral City and creates a framework within which the tribe can make significant investments that will generate jobs and stimulate additional economic growth in each of those communities.

The compact with the Jamul Indian Village recognizes that the tribe has committed to support projects that benefit local residents, ranging from transportation infrastructure improvements to funding for enhanced fire services, as the tribe makes the transition from a recipient of Revenue Sharing Trust Fund money to a contributing tribe.

The new Pechanga compact will make the tribe one of the largest contributors to funds - including the new California Native American Education and Scholarship Fund and the Revenue Sharing Trust Fund - which support other tribal governments and their members. In addition, the compact creates a new Local Community Credit Fund that will serve as a vehicle for investments in projects that benefit the tribe and the local community.

The compact with Yocha Dehe affirms the tribe's commitment to the residents of Yolo County and is intended to enable the tribal government to invest in worthy causes, such as providing needed funding, economic development and infrastructure for tribal and non-tribal governments; scholarships for Native American people and funding for schools dedicated to Native American education; capital to help local governments establish the machinery needed to protect cultural resources; and housing and health care benefits for those in need.

The amendment to the compact with the Yurok Tribe conforms the provisions of its 2006 compact regarding workers' compensation to those of more recent compacts.

Gambling in Latvia: Benefit or Harm for State?

RIGA, Latvia (August 22, 2017) -- Gambling in Latvia is one of business areas, showing a steady growth. According to the results of 2016, the industry is ready to enter a pre-crisis level; however, changed government policy towards the gambling sector challenges not only its development but also its existence within legal environment. Market analysts are trying to find out whether the gambling business provides Latvia with benefits or whether its development is indeed related with harmful consequences for the country.

Gambling in Latvia in figures

Here is a brief information on the gambling business in Latvia as of June 2017:

  • 315 gambling halls;
  • 8826 registered slot machines;
  • 6 land-based casinos;
  • 183 gambling tables.

The majority of venues are located in Riga.

Gambling business owners make significant investments in the industry. Over the past 5 years, investments have reached around €102 million and been used for safety control, real property purchase, acquisition of new games and slot machines and reconstruction of gambling halls.

2016 was an especially successful year for the Latvian gambling sector, completing with the turnover of €264 million (a little less than the pre-crisis record: €264 million in 2007). €29.1 million of that sum went to the state treasury and €7.9 million to local self-governments.

Taxation

Latvia was attractive for gambling organizations until 2017 due to the fixed tax rate and absence of double taxation. But now, the government is starting a tax overhaul, supposing the increase of gambling taxation. In 2017, one also adopted a prohibition on locating gambling halls in the historic city center, save for territories of major hotels.

The Ministry of Finance has the following plans:

  • income tax on lottery winnings;
  • 20% dividend tax;
  • increase of gambling business taxation up to 30%.

If the amendments are approved, they will be accepted this fall. Industry experts believes that it will lead to the decrease of the amount of gambling halls, reduction of staff and cutting of wages. According to some forecasts, the legal industry will be destroyed and this sector will become shadow. Meantime, research shows that the gambling development not only has a disastrous influence on the economy and social aspect but also provides significant benefits.

Who visit gambling halls?

In 2016, SKDS surveyed gambling lovers in order to assemble a psychological profile on a common player and find out how much Latvian citizens are affected by problem gambling.

The survey has revealed the following facts:

  • More than two-thirds of Latvian citizens aged 18-74 years have never gambled.
  • Primarily, casinos and slot machine halls are attended by working men aged 25-34 years.
  • A majority of gamblers aim to go out, in other words to have a time out of home among like-minded people.
  • A share of Latvian playing in online casinos increased by 11% in five years.
  • Two-thirds of gamblers spend up to €10 per month.
  • One-fifth of respondents win around €10 per month.
  • Another 13% of players win from €11 to €50.
  • Only 11% of respondents believe that they are addicted to gambling. Besides, more than 30% of them say that they are affected by serials and social media, while 46% admit their computer dependency.

These data prove that the problem gambling issue in Latvia is not quite critical. On the contrary, a majority of citizens refer casino visits to a part of their social life.

Gambling industry benefits

Not only does legal gambling play an entertainment role, but it also brings a huge sum to the budget in terms of tax liabilities.

Adopting laws on gambling restrictions, authorities were going to compensate expected state treasury losses by increasing the excise tax on fuel, cigarettes and spirits. However, €29.1 million (and €7.9 million for municipal governments) is quite a significant sum for the country with the budget of €8.066 billion for 2018.

This gambling situation is still disputable. The Latvian Association of Gaming Business (noncommercial association) and government are engaged in a tough talk. Thus, the main topic of Riga Gaming Congress international conference is gambling business prospects in Latvia. Is there a future for Latvian gambling? Experts from various countries and industries will answer this question.

BetBuddy CEO to Show How Data Can Encourage Positive Play at EiG

LONON, U.K. (August 22, 2017) -- Simo Dragicevic, is one of over 50 thought leaders appearing at this year's EiG (30 October - 1 November, Arena Berlin). The BetBuddy CEO provides a preview of his presentation and argues why data is such an effective tool when it comes to building positive relationships with customers.

What is going to be the core thrust of your presentation at EiG.  How would you summarise the key take outs?

The title of our session is Creating Positive Play and Smart Customer Profiling, and I think it demonstrates an emerging shift in attitudes in industry towards how data can be used to build a sustainable business.

Whilst there is, and will rightly continue to be, significant focus on using data to better understand, prevent, and minimise at-risk and problematic play, the positive play concept focuses on beliefs, values, and behaviours that encourage the opposite. So I'll be exploring how empirical research and behavioural profiling can be used to build positive relationships with customers. The panel also includes Lonnie Hamm from Kindred, who I know well and who is doing awesome things with data in a very progressive and successful gaming group, so it will be great for the industry to hear more about the latest developments.

Do you think the gaming industry can be criticised for being too intrusive and knowing too much about its customers. Is there a moral argument that needs to be explored?

Yes, there is an ethical and moral argument for sure, but I don't think the gaming industry should be singled out. For example, Facebook has built an incredibly successful advertising business based on very deep knowledge of its users. It's so successful that 26% of all Facebook users who click on an advert in the US made a purchase - I think that's incredible! The gaming industry is also realising that its most powerful asset is data, and it's natural that operators are investing considerably in teams and platforms to understand customers better. However, there is a business and moral argument that putting your customer first means using that data to understand their needs and offering relevant products and services. From an ethical perspective, this means that operators should not target vulnerable customers irresponsibly and that customers always know what data is being collected and used what it will be used for. With regulations such as GDPR on the horizon, transparency in how data is used will become increasingly critical to the industry.

Gaming is one of the earliest adopters of new technology – can the advances pioneered by gaming be translated to other commercial sectors and if so, which ones?

The gaming industry has pioneered some aspects of using technology to protect consumers that other industries have adopted, and can further adopt. Gaming was one of the first industries to adopt age verification technology, which has become widespread across many industries now. I can see how some of the advances made in gaming in using data and machine learning for consumer protection could be applied to other industries, such as day trading to protect traders using personalised protection rather than some of the'one-size-fits-all' approaches to capping leverage, for example.

Also in retail financial services, behavioural profiling and implementing behavioural insights (e.g., 'nudge principles'), which we are trialling in the gaming industry, could support the millions of UK customers who over-indebted, to better manage their finances.

How important are events such as EiG to help share knowledge, enhance professional standards and showcase the gaming industry to regulators and opinion formers?

They are really important. Some areas of technology are going through a very rapid pace of change, and understanding what the major operators and suppliers are doing is important. Networking is also a really important part of the gaming industry. The industry, whilst commercially very large, is quite small from a networking perspective, and you need to work on building relationships with your customers, stakeholders, partners, and suppliers. Gaming is also no different from any other industry in that it's very people centric and companies like doing business with people they know, meet regularly and trust, and who are actively sharing best practice and innovation in their respective fields.
