Scientific Games Reports Third Quarter 2017 Results

Growth Achieved across Gaming, Lottery and Interactive Businesses

LAS VEGAS, NV (November 1, 2017) -- Scientific Games Corporation (NASDAQ: SGMS) ("Scientific Games" or the "Company"), today reported results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2017.

Third quarter revenue rose 7 percent to $768.9 million, up from $720.0 million a year ago. The growth was driven by revenue increases in each of the Gaming, Lottery and Interactive segments. Foreign exchange had a $2.1 million favorable impact on revenue.

Operating income in the third quarter increased 170 percent to $90.6 million from $33.5 million a year ago, reflecting revenue growth, a more profitable revenue mix, more effective business processes and lower depreciation and amortization. Net loss declined to $59.3 million from $98.9 million in the prior-year period, reflecting the improvement in operating income and a $16.5 million decrease in interest expense, partially offset by an $8.4 million loss from financing transactions and a $15.5 million decrease in income tax benefit.

Scientific Games

Attributable EBITDA ("AEBITDA"), a non-GAAP financial measure defined below, increased 10 percent to $299.0 million from $271.6 million a year ago, primarily driven by higher revenue, a more profitable revenue mix and more effective business processes. AEBITDA margin, a non- GAAP financial measure defined below, improved to 38.9 percent from 37.7 percent a year ago.

Net cash provided by operating activities decreased $41.4 million to $109.5 million from a year ago. The primary driver was an unfavorable change in working capital accounts of $107.1 million, partially offset by a $64.5 million increase in incremental net earnings adjusted for non-cash adjustments and other items.

The Company completed a refinancing of its $3.283 billion of existing term loans that lowered the applicable interest rate by 75 basis points and extended maturity to 2024.

The Company entered into a definitive agreement to acquire NYX Gaming Group Limited("NYX") at a total enterprise value of approximately $631 million; subject to closing, the transaction is expected to ideally position Scientific Games to capitalize on the growing global online gaming and sports betting markets. Subsequent to third quarter end, the Company issued $350.0 million aggregate principal amount of 5.000% senior secured notes due 2025 to partially fund this acquisition.

At quarter-end, our net debt leverage ratio decreased to 6.7 times trailing twelve-month AEBITDA, down from 7.4 times a year ago. We remain committed to our path of deleveraging, while capitalizing on meaningful opportunities to grow our business."


Total gaming revenue increased $6.4 million, or 1 percent, compared to the strong results of the year-ago period, inclusive of a $2.2 million favorable foreign exchange impact.

Operating income improved $33.7 million to $85.2 million. The increase primarily reflected the benefit of the higher revenue and lower depreciation and amortization compared to the 2016 third quarter.

AEBITDA increased to $221.2 million with an AEBITDA margin of 48.7 percent, reflecting the higher revenue and improved business processes compared to the prior year.

Gaming operations revenue declined $6.4 million, or 4 percent, largely reflecting a year-over- year decrease in the installed base of WAP, premium, and daily-fee participation gaming machines. On a quarterly sequential basis, gaming operations revenue declined $2.4 million, primarily related to a decrease in average revenue per day. A 105-unit increase in the WAP, premium and daily-fee participation units installed base at quarter-end - the first quarterly sequential increase since 2014 - was offset by a $0.71 per day seasonal sequential decline in average daily revenue. The installed base of other leased and participation gaming machines was essentially flat on a quarterly sequential basis, as the placement of additional VLTs at New York gaming facilities and the ongoing roll-out of VLTs in Greece was offset by a convert-to-sale of participation units in certain  Maryland casinos. The $0.30 decrease in the average daily revenue per unit of other leased and participation units included the impact from the lower-yielding Greek VLTs.

Gaming machine sales revenue increased $3.3 million year over year, largely due to a 30-percent increase in shipments of U.S. and Canadian replacement gaming machines that reflects the strong performance of the TwinStar® J43 gaming machine. The increase in replacement units more than offset the impact from lower global sales related to fewer new casino openings and expansions. The average sales price increased to $17,643 from $16,824 in the prior year, reflecting a more favorable mix of gaming machines. U.S. and Canadian shipments totaled 4,662 gaming machines, including 3,932 replacement units, 251 units for new casino openings and expansions and 479 VGTs for the Illinois market. In the prior-year period, U.S. and Canadian shipments totaled 4,022 units, which comprised 3,033 replacement units, 744 units for new casino openings and expansions and 245 VGTs for the Illinois market. International shipments decreased 998 units, or 25 percent, to 2,940 units, primarily reflecting 915 fewer new units sold for new casino openings, compared with 3,938 units in the prior year, which had included 945 units for new casino openings.

Gaming systems revenue increased 8 percent to $62.0 million, primarily reflecting an increase in hardware sales, including shipment of innovative new iVIEW4 player-interface display units.

Table products revenue increased 11 percent to $53.5 million, including growth in the installed base of shufflers, proprietary table games and progressives, and a benefit from the acquisition of DEQ Systems Corp. completed in January 2017.


Total lottery revenue increased $16.3 million, or 9 percent, inclusive of a $0.1 million unfavorable foreign exchange impact compared to the year-ago period.

Operating income increased $19.2 million, primarily reflecting the benefit from higher revenue and a more profitable revenue mix, coupled with lower selling, general and administrative expense and lower depreciation and amortization.

AEBITDA increased 15 percent to $89.2 million compared to $77.3 million in the prior year, with AEBITDA margin improving to 44.0 percent, primarily reflecting the revenue increase, a more profitable revenue mix and lower selling, general and administrative expense.

Instant games revenue increased $3.9 million, or 3 percent, as an $8.3 million increase in U.S. revenue was partially offset by a $4.4 million decline in international revenue that largely reflected unfavorable timing of instant game launches in markets with price-per-unit contracts. During the third quarter, the Company won: a six-year contract with two two-year extension options to continue as the primary provider of instant games and associated services to the Colorado Lottery, a 2-year contract extension with the Ohio Lottery to continue as the primary provider of instant games and associated services, and a contract extension with the Oregon Lottery to continue as a provider of instant games and associated services through June 2018.

Services revenue increased $6.0 million, primarily reflecting higher U.S. retail sales of multi-state games compared to the prior year and higher international revenue. During the quarter, the Company signed a new 10-year contract with a five-year extension option to provide technologies, systems and services to the Kansas Lottery, displacing a competitor.

Product sales revenue increased $6.4 million, primarily reflecting higher international software and hardware sales due to increased lottery bid activity compared with the prior year.


Total interactive revenue grew 31 percent to $111.4 million, primarily reflecting a 35 percent increase in social gaming B2C revenue due to the ongoing popularity and growth of the Jackpot Party® Social Casinoand Quick Hit® Slots apps, coupled with the success of more recent apps, such as the 88 Fortunes™ app launched in the first quarter of 2017, and the contribution of the Bingo Showdown™ app, acquired with the April 2017 acquisition of Spicerack Media, Inc.

Operating income increased 34 percent to $12.9 million, primarily reflecting the higher revenue. Selling, general and administrative expense increased primarily due to higher marketing expenses to support ongoing growth and pre-launch game development for apps not yet launched.

AEBITDA rose 71 percent to $23.2 million and AEBITDA margin increased to 20.8 percent, primarily reflecting higher revenue and improved operating leverage, partially offset by increased marketing costs and ongoing development initiatives underlying the rapid growth.

In the third quarter, the Company completed the acquisition of Red7Mobile Ltd., a privately held U.K.-based mobile and interactive casino content developer.

Net cash provided by operating activities decreased $41.4 million to $109.5 million, primarily reflecting a $107.1 million unfavorable change in various working capital accounts, partially offset by a $64.5 million increase in incremental net earnings adjusted for non-cash adjustments and other items.

The most significant changes in working capital accounts were a $37 million increase in receivables reflecting the timing of collections, $30 million from the timing of interest payments due to the refinancing of our term loans and $30 million related to timing of vendor payments, partially offset by a $19 million decrease in inventory.

The change in deferred income taxes and other is a result of the valuation allowance on our deferred taxes.

Capital expenditures totaled $73.9 million for the quarter. For 2017, the Company continues to expect capital expenditures will be within a range of $280-$310 million, based on existing contractual obligations and planned investments.

During the quarter, the Company modified its credit agreement, which lowered the term loan interest rate by 75 basis points and extended the term loan maturity to August 2024.

BCLC Awards Contract to Replace Current Lottery Terminals to Novomatic Lottery Solutions

Lotto America Launches Nov. 12 with Supersized Jackpot

New Lottery Game, Carolina Keno, Starts Today in North Carolina

Launch events this afternoon in Raleigh and Mooresville


RALEIGH, North Carolina (October 29, 2017) -- North Carolinians have a fun, new lottery game to play today as Carolina Keno begins in more than 650 locations across the state. 

Carolina Keno offers chances to win prizes in drawings every five minutes. It’s the first new draw game offered by the Education Lottery since February 2016. Eighteen other states already have their own version of Keno, including the neighbouring states of Tennessee and Georgia.

Our other draw games offer the chance to win prizes in daily or twice-a-week drawings,” said Alice Garland, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery. “Carolina Keno will serve up its fun much faster, every five minutes. It’s exciting to have a brand new game played in a new way and in new places.”

The new game is played in social settings such as restaurants, bars, and stores with spaces where people gather for food and drink. Typically, people play Keno with their friends, buying tickets as they socialize and watch nearby TV monitors for the winning numbers in the drawings.


Garland said Carolina Keno will help the lottery continue to increase its sales and raise additional money for education as it attracts new players and new retailers to lottery games. If sales meet projections, estimates are the new game will raise an additional $10.8 million for education this year and an additional $33 million next year.

In Carolina Keno, players choose how many numbers, or spots, they want to try and match. The number of spots they play and match determines how much they win. For each drawing, 20 numbers out of 80 possible are selected as winning numbers and they are displayed on nearby TV monitors. The price is determined by the player. Players can buy a single drawing for $1, $2, $3, $5, or $10.

Approximate overall odds of winning a prize range from 1 in 3.86 to 1 in 16.63. The approximate odds of winning $100,000 or $1 million on a 10 Spot Game are 1 in 8.91 million. Players must be 18 years old to play. Keno retailers are responsible for checking IDs to ensure players are 18 or older just as they do with other age-controlled products that they sell.

The Education Lottery is teaming up with two of its new retail partners in Raleigh and Mooresville to help get the new game launched today. Halfway Through FY 2017 - 2018, Loto-Québec Reports Increasing Income

MONTRÉAL, Quebec, Canada (October 27, 2017) -- Halfway through FY 2017 - 2018, Loto-Québec is reporting increased income. For the six month period ending on September 25, 2017, consolidated revenues reached $1.814 billion, higher by $60.7 million (+3.5%) compared to the same period in 2016 - 2017. Net income reached $678.6 million, up by $39.5 million (+6.2%).

This is the 10th consecutive quarter that revenues have increased.

The $35.0 million increase in revenues is primarily attributable to sales of the new terminal-based Grande Vie game launched on October 18, 2016. Loto-Québec’s market share of this pan-Canadian lottery remains high at 34.7%.

As for the three national products (Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49 and Grande Vie), Loto-Québec had the best sales performance among the five Canadian lottery corporations. The excellent visibility given to the many jackpot winners during the period and measures implemented to stimulate instant lottery offerings also contributed to its impressive performance.

During the six month period, the Corporation paid out close to 9,200 prizes or prize shares worth over $1,000 to lottery winners, including 48 prizes worth over $1 million.

Casinos report higher revenues from continually renewed gaming and entertainment offerings.

The overall number of visits increased by 222,000 (+4.6%) compared to the same dates last year.

Patronage by tourists from outside Québec is also going up in all four casinos.



Higher revenues are mostly attributable to gaming halls, who continue to put in a good showing.

Entertainment activities held in the halls are as popular as ever, drawing in increasing numbers of people. Gaming halls welcomed some 34,000 more visitors (+8%) than at the same dates last year.

The reconfiguration of the video lottery terminal network in bars and brasseries continues as planned.

The five bingo halls that will participate in the electronic bingo pilot project have been selected.



Loto-Québec’s online gaming site continues to record increasing revenues, with $50.0 million for the sixmonth period – all games combined –, or $14.9 million higher (+42.3%) than during the same period last year.

Work to streamline the browsing experience is underway and progressing well.

Finally, Loto-Québec’s 2017 - 2020 Strategic Plan was submitted to the National Assembly on September 28, 2017. Pennsylvania Governor Moves to Protect Senior Programs with New Lottery Initiative

Lottery to Oversee Virtual Sports at Retailers

HARRISBURG, PA (October 27, 2017) -- Governor Tom Wolf today announced that he is taking action to stabilize the Lottery Fund, which supports important senior programs, by authorizing the Pennsylvania Lottery to offer virtual sports games at Lottery retailers, including bars and taverns.

The Pennsylvania Lottery provided more than $1 billion last year for older Pennsylvanians, assisting with property tax and rent rebates, transportation, care services, prescription assistance and local services such as senior centers and meals,” said Governor Wolf.


However, intense competition is straining Lottery profits as seniors are increasingly relying on these programs.

This action allows us to protect our commitment to seniors and stabilize funding for those vital programs, while providing Lottery retailers, including bars and taverns, with a new source of revenue.”

Under this arrangement, the Pennsylvania Lottery will offer virtual sports, which are draw-based, animated games permitted by the Lottery Law that players watch on a monitor. The games look like a sporting event, such as football, car racing, boxing and more, but are not actual matches or teams. The winner is selected at random, similar to the Lottery’s computerized midday drawings.

For example, a virtual car race would have various cars that represent numbers. Players select a car and watch the simulated race.  If their car wins or places, they win a prize.

Lottery projects this could add as much as $75 million for senior programs to the Lottery Fund over the next five years. These virtual sports games are successful in other states and countries, and usually have drawings every five to 10 minutes.

Participating retailers will receive a 5 percent commission, the same amount earned on other types of Lottery games.

Camelot Launch New ‘Scratch and See’ Ad Campaign

UK (October 27, 2017) -- Camelot has today announced the launch of a brand new advertising campaign for National Lottery Scratchcards under the strapline, ‘Scratch and See’. The multi-channel campaign – which features five national TV ads, OOH and digital, as well as an exclusive media partnership with Bauer Media – will kick off on Sunday (29 October) with the first 30” ad airing during The X Factor.

The campaign uses scratch-off panels, like those used on National Lottery Scratchcards, across the creatives – constructing a sense of mystery as to what’s underneath. On TV, the blind date-themed ads are voiced by Jennie Bond and see a woman, Harriet, on a series of five different dates. All of her could-be suitors are covered by the panel, which she then scratches away to reveal potential partners – all of whom have their own interests and quirks.


The digital assets feature an astronaut in space, scratching off the panel to uncover a variety of different items – from the everyday (like a globe) to the more surreal (like a hot dog and panda balloon). The three OOH executions see the astronaut, as well as a boxer and an acrobat, all in the process of scratching off the panel – leaving what might be underneath to the imagination.

The ‘Scratch and See’ campaign will also see Camelot partner with Bauer Media on bespoke content fronted by Made in Chelsea star, Jamie Laing. This will include a scratch-off panel in Heat magazine on the ‘Torso of the Week’ page, which readers can remove to reveal a competition. This will offer the chance to get lucky every day across the month of November with ‘30 Days of Luckiness’ with ‘Laing’s Lucky Streak’. Tailored content has also been produced for Closer and The Debrief.

Hayley Stringfellow, Head of Brand Marketing for The National Lottery, said: “There is a sense of anticipation when you play a National Lottery Scratchcard that we’re trying to replicate with this campaign. We’ve created a range of different executions that are all variations on a theme, so even if someone has already seen a couple of the ads, they might still be surprised by a new ending that they’ve not seen before. We’ve also included a few slightly bizarre reveals, to potentially make people do a double-take and to keep them guessing what might be uncovered next time.

Government to Take Action on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals

Gambling Minister Tracey Crouch launches 12-week consultation on stake reduction to better protect consumers and communities

UNITED KINGOM (October 31, 2017) -- Government also announces moves to ensure stronger protections around online gambling and a new industry-led responsible gambling advertising campaign

The maximum stakes on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) will be reduced, Gambling Minister Tracey Crouch announced today as the government published its gambling review.

The government has launched a consultation on a range of options on cutting maximum stakes of B2 gaming machines, otherwise known as FOBTs, from £100 to between £50 and £2. We have also asked the Gambling Commission for more information about how better tracking and monitoring of play on FOBTs can help with interventions to protect players and also if spin speed on games such as roulette should be looked at.


This is to reduce the potential for large losses on the machines and the risk of harm to both the player and wider communities in which these machines are located, such as the increased health costs associated with problem gambling.

In addition to the launch of a 12 week consultation on FOBTs, there will be a package of measures taking effect to strengthen protections around online gambling and gambling advertising to further minimise the risk to vulnerable people and children.

Gambling Minister Tracey Crouch said:

It is vital that we strike the right balance between socially responsible growth and protecting the most vulnerable, including children, from gambling-related harm.

Given the strong evidence and public concerns about the risks of high stakes gaming machines on the high street, we are convinced of the need for action. That is why today we have set out a package of proposals to ensure all consumers and wider communities are protected.

We have seen online gambling grow rapidly and we need to protect players in this space, while also making sure those experiencing harm relating to gambling receive the help they need.

The package of measures taking effect include:

  • Raising standards of player protection for online gambling - The Gambling Commission will consult on changes to the Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice next year, with the aim of raising standards on player protection online and will set out expectations to the industry around customer interaction online.
  • Responsible gambling campaign - GambleAware, Advertising Association, broadcasters and gambling industry groups will come together to draw up a major two year responsible gambling advertising campaign. The campaign will have a budget of £5 to £7 million per year and will include TV adverts, including around live sport, as well as radio, cinema, online and print. The campaign will be funded by gambling operators, including online-only betting firms, with airspace and digital media provided by broadcasters.
  • New advertising guidelines - This will be drawn up by the Committees of Advertising Practice (CAP) to help protect those at risk of problem gambling and children and young people by ensuring that the content of gambling adverts does not encourage impulsive or socially irresponsible gambling.
  • Strengthening the code on responsible gambling advertising - The Industry Group for Responsible Gambling (IGRG) are strengthening the code on responsible gambling advertising to require operators to ensure gambling content and channels cannot be accessed by under-18s via social media
  • Responsible gambling initiatives - Gambling operators should step up on funding for research, education and treatment. If not, government will consider other options, including introducing a mandatory levy on gambling operators.


Regarding the stakes and prizes of other gaming machines, the government is recommending maintaining current stakes, apart from on prize bingo gaming where the government is content with industry proposals to increase takes from £1 to £2 and prizes from £70 to £100.

This follows the Government’s call for evidence launched in October 2016, that looked at the gambling landscape, including the number and location of gaming machines in licensed premises and the social responsibility measures in place to protect players and communities from gambling-related harm.
