Pollard Banknote Shares Retail Success Strategies with Lotteries at Its Global Xchange Client Conference

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Canada (January 29, 2018) -- Pollard Banknote Limited (TSX: PBL) (“Pollard Banknote”) is pleased to announce that its Global Xchange client conference, held January 23-25, 2018, was a remarkable success.

Held in San Antonio, Texas, this year’s conference brought together lottery delegates to explore strategies for growing sales in the traditional retail landscape. Focused primarily on instant games, the conference created a space for lotteries to concentrate on cultivating an important segment of their business. Pollard Banknote has provided instant ticket printing and support services for the Texas Lottery Commission (“Texas Lottery”) since 1999, and was thrilled to host the conference in their state.

As the traditional shopping environment evolves in the face of emerging technologies, such as social media and digital apps, lotteries are tasked with finding new ways to keep pace with these changes by adopting new instant ticket products and retail strategies that attract and engage players. The conference offered lottery clients the unique opportunity to share successes and exchange ideas to improve retail sales in an interactive and informative setting.

During the three-day event, representatives from 24 lotteries took part in a variety of activities, such as strategy-focused presentations, retailer roundtables, and networking sessions, that allowed them to gain new insights from peers and industry experts while forming productive relationships with lottery leaders from around the world. Utilizing market research, case studies, and hands-on experience, attendees exchanged ideas about various topics including product innovations, game launches, and new retail strategies.

Kentucky Lottery Sales Finish The Halfway Mark Of Fiscal Year Strong

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (January 26, 2018) -- In today’s meeting of the Kentucky Lottery’s board of directors, it was announced sales for the first half of the fiscal year are 6% ahead of where they were at the same period last year.

Vice President and Corporate Controller Maggie Garrison reported strong increases in scratch-off tickets and Keno sales helped lead the gains. Scratch-off ticket sales for July through December were $294.8 million, a $10.3 million (3.6%) increase. Keno sales jumped $4.4 million (12.7%) to $39.4 million.

The multistate Powerball and Mega Millions games also showed healthy increases. Powerball sales were $42.5 million, a $6.1 million (16.7%) increase, while Mega Millions sales of $17.6 million were up $2.4 million (15.6%). “And this was before the large jackpot runs in January that saw both games have simultaneous jackpots over $400 million,” Garrison said.

Executive Vice President & CFO Howard Kline reported on projections looking toward the last half of Fiscal Year 2018. Kline said current projections show sales ending the year at $1.037 billion, which is $3.8 million (0.4%) higher than what was budgeted.

Sales are up due to solid performances from our jackpot games and scratch-off products, and we’ve been able to do this all while lowering operating expenses by almost $700,000, which is 4.7% less than last year,” said President and CEO Tom Delacenserie. “We have some innovative games – especially in the scratch-off product – planned for the last half of the fiscal year, so we anticipate ending on a strong note.”

He added, “I’d also like to thank our board for their strong support, and our retailers and hard-working sales and corporate team for their great efforts.”

In other business, the board approved:

  • A contract renewal with Smartplay International for random number generator systems;
  • A contract renewal with Affiliated Forensic Laboratory Inc. for lottery ticket testing;
  • A lease renewal with Ershig Properties for office and storage space for the Madisonville regional office;
  • A memorandum of agreement renewal with the Commonwealth Office of Technology to house the Lottery’s back-up data center;
  • A contract with SeNet International Corporation for computer and lottery security services, and
  • Rules and regulations for five scratch-off tickets, artwork and prize structures for two additional instant tickets, and rule changes for 14 Instant Play games.

 

The next meeting of the KLC’s board of directors will be March 23. The meeting will begin at 10:00 AM Eastern, and will be held at the KLC headquarters at 1011 West Main Street in Louisville. The audit committee meeting will begin at 8:00 AM Eastern, as well as the procurement committee at 9:00 AM Eastern.

Svenska Spel CEO Resigns

SWEDEN (January 26, 2018) -- After almost seven years as CEO of Svenska Spel, Lennart Käll has decided to leave his office. The assignment that Lennart Käll received when he took over as CEO in 2011 has been completed and the transition to the upcoming gaming license market is a good opportunity to transfer the responsibility of Svenska Spel to a new CEO.

In March 2017, the State Game Survey presented its proposal for the introduction of a licensed market in Sweden. According to the timetable, a bill for new spell legislation will be adopted in the Riksdag in June and will come into force on January 1, 2019.

UK Gambling Commission Wants You to Have Your Say on Proposals to Make Gambling More Fair and Open

Gambling Commission Seeks Powers to Fine Companies for Advertising Breaches

BIRMINGHAM, U.K. (January 25, 2018) – Consumers, gambling businesses, stakeholders and members of the public are being invited to voice their opinion on proposed changes to regulations relating to marketing and advertising, unfair terms, and complaints and disputes.

The proposed changes to the Licence conditions and codes of practice are aimed at ensuring operators are being fair and open with consumers.

They include a focus on compliance with the UK Advertising Codes, making sure operators comply with all relevant consumer protection legislation, and improvements to consumer complaints handling including the introduction of an eight-week time limit for licensees to deal with gambling complaints.

Sarah Gardner, Commission Executive Director, said: “We are proposing these changes because of the risk of consumer harm, concern about lack of compliance with consumer protection legislation, declining public trust in gambling and concerns about advertising. We’re very keen to hear the views of all those with an interest in the gambling industry.”

The proposed changes are just one part of a much wider work programme which will require regulators, industry and partners to work together to deliver changes.

The closing date is 5pm on 22 April 2018.

Football Union and Sports Betting Integrity Association Team-Up to Protect Rugby

BRUSSELS, Belgium (January 25, 2018) -- The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has teamed up with international sports betting integrity body ESSA (Sports Betting Integrity) to protect rugby in England from potential match manipulation and sports betting breaches. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties will see ESSA employ its monitoring and alert system covering its members’ regulated betting markets, which comprises some of the largest operators in the world, to monitor for any suspicious betting patterns.

ESSA Secretary General Khalid Ali said: “No one can or should be complacent in the face of criminal elements intent on corrupting any sport to defraud betting companies. ESSA therefore welcomes the continuing proactive approach of the RFU and the formation of this alliance. The RFU is among a group of sports bodies that have made important and effective strides in this area and ESSA remains committed to working in partnership with those responsible organisations.

Angus Bujalski RFU Legal & Governance Director said: “While no instances of betting related match-fixing have to date been identified in English rugby union we need to continue to be vigilant. We have already put in place a range of measures to raise awareness and to set clear rules to maintain the integrity of the game. This MoU is another important milestone in that process and complements our existing work. English rugby has so far been free of betting related match-fixing and we are working hard with our partners such as ESSA to ensure that it remains that way.”

ESSA holds positions on match-fixing and betting policy forums at the European Commission, Council of Europe and the IOC. It is driving a number of important initiatives aimed at addressing match-fixing and is currently involved in four anti-match-fixing projects (see here), having hosted an international betting integrity conference at Lords Cricket Ground (see here) at the end of last year, attended by over 150 senior officials from sports bodies, regulators and other key stakeholders.

ESSA’s Q3 integrity report for 2017 (here) stated that 72 cases of suspicious betting had been referred to the relevant authorities during the quarter, adding to a total of 152 alerts over the first three quarters of the year; the 2017 annual report will be available shortly. The RFU is a member of the UK Sports Betting Integrity Forum (SBIF); its betting and anti-corruption rules can be found here.

Keno Sales Exceed $1M in New Hampshire

KENO 603 Reaches $1 Million Sales Mark

CONCORD, N.H. (January 30, 2018) -- In just six weeks, KENO 603 has exceeded the $1 million sales mark in New Hampshire. The New Hampshire Lottery is announcing the sales milestone as its newest game continues to outpace sales projections. KENO 603 launched state-wide on Friday, December 15. The game is on sale at 45 locations state-wide, and restaurant and tavern owners are indicating KENO 603 has had a positive impact on business.

We are extremely pleased to see the initial success of KENO 603, as players have been drawn to establishments offering the new game,” said Charlie McIntyre, executive director of the New Hampshire Lottery. “We are hearing from licensed establishments that KENO 603 is a significant business driver that adds fun, excitement, entertainment and plenty of winning to the overall experience.

The top-selling KENO 603 establishments include 2 Doors Down in Somersworth, Billy’s Sports Bar & Grill in Manchester and the Southside Tavern in Manchester. Earlier this month, a lucky KENO 603 player won a $13,500 prize at Fricker’s Neighbourhood Grill in Manchester.

We’re definitely seeing more traffic coming in because of KENO 603. Our regular customers are playing and we’re seeing new folks come in to play as well. This is our slowest time of the year. When the golf course opens, and with a 200-seat outdoor deck, I think we’ll be especially busy come spring,” said Mike Lanoie, owner of the Derryfield Restaurant. “If I didn’t have KENO 603, I would lose customers to other restaurants and bars that do have it.”

David Henrick, owner of the 405 Pub & Grill in Laconia, said KENO 603 has been nothing but a positive.

It’s created a lot of excitement and our restaurant business has grown,” said Henrick, who noted he’s seen new and regular guests enjoying KENO 603. “It’s really given our customers something new and fun to do while they’re here. Someone will win and then everybody gets excited because they want to win too.”

People definitely know that proceeds support education so it makes them feel good when they play. It’s just a win-win all the way around,” Henrick added.

The New Hampshire Lottery is continuing to work with municipalities and business establishments across the state to implement KENO 603. Governor Sununu signed Senate Bill 191 into law in July, establishing KENO 603 as a revenue source to fund full-day kindergarten. The New Hampshire Lottery has been adding licensed KENO 603 locations weekly.

Legislators developed Senate Bill 191 to give individual municipalities the option to allow KENO 603 by putting it on city election ballots or the warrant of annual town meetings. As towns are compiling warrant articles for 2018 town meetings, New Hampshire Lottery officials are meeting with municipalities to answer any questions from residents, business owners and elected officials regarding KENO 603 and the implementation process.

During each KENO 603 game, players choose from one to 12 numbers, and every five minutes (11:05 AM to 11:00 PM) a computer randomly generates and displays 20 winning numbers from 1 to 80 on a television monitor. A player may place a wager from $1 to $25 per game. The more numbers players match, the more they win.

The ad, which features Channel 4 regulars Rachel Riley and Joe Wilkinson, breaks tomorrow evening (Friday 26 January 2018) during 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and sees Rachel winning more than she bargained for from uninterested carnival stallholder Joe Wilkinson. The ad concludes with Rachel wondering how exactly she’ll get her fairground prize – an amazing new speedboat – home.

A collaboration between Camelot’s media agency Vizeum, The Story Lab and 4Sales, the ad coincides with tonight’s launch of the new EuroMillions HotPicks game. With games every

Tuesday and Friday and costing just £1.50 to play, the game offers players the chance to win bigger prizes than they expected – just like Rachel does.
