Education Lottery Raises a Record-Setting $708 Million for Education

Also sets new sales record for 13th year in a row

RALEIGH, NC (July 31, 2019) -- The N.C. Education Lottery raised the most money ever for education programs in fiscal year 2019, setting a new record of $708.3 million.

The Education Lottery also increased its sales for the 13th year in a row with ticket sales climbing to $2.86 billion at the end of the fiscal year on June 30, up 9.8 percent from the year before, according to final but unaudited results.

This performance demonstrates how much Tar Heels love their lottery,” said Mark Michalko, executive director of the Education Lottery. “North Carolinians get the chance to win prizes from fun games ranging from scratch-off tickets to Powerball. Along the way, a lot of money is raised for education, the good causes that our lottery serves.

The sales rank the Education Lottery as one of the top sales and marketing organizations in North Carolina. Daily averages show:

  • $7.8 million a day in sales.
  • $5 million a day in prizes.
  • $1.9 million a day raised for education.

 

The additional dollars support education programs in all 100 counties of the state, as determined each year by legislators in the state budget. This year, the additional dollars helped:

  • Build and repair schools.
  • Make college more affordable through scholarships and grants based on financial need.
  • Support school systems by covering the costs of school workers and transportation.
  • Provide a free academic preschool to four-year-olds.

 

The lottery’s performance continues its record of increasing sales every year of its operations. A recent performance audit described the lottery’s performance in the U.S. lottery industry as “exceptional” and praised its prudent “costs-benefit approach” to monitoring its expenses.

Retailers across the state earned $199 million in commissions from lottery ticket sales, $17 million more than the year before. With 7,049 retail locations, the commissions play an important role in the state’s retail economy.

At the end of the fiscal year on June 30, the lottery’s total contribution since inception in March 2006 exceeded $6.6 billion.

Arkansas Scholarship Lottery Will Be Launching In-Lane Supermarket Sales Through ABACUS Solutions’ Fusion Platform Integrated with INTRALOT’s Solution

LONDON, U.K. (July 29, 2019) -- Abacus Solutions International Group (ABACUS) is pleased to announce that the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery has agreed terms to implement lottery sales in-lane in supermarkets using the ABACUS Fusion platform.

Using the North American State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL) API, the ABACUS Fusion platform will be integrated with the Lottery’s new, advanced central gaming system from INTRALOT to enable in-lane sales of Arkansas Scholarship Lottery games in supermarkets throughout the state.

The NASPL API has been developed by a working group of lottery and vendor personnel who shared a goal to increase lottery sales by providing an optimal consumer and retailer solution (particularly for multilane environments) at under- or non-penetrated retailers. Underpinning the API’s success will be the lottery community’s willingness to interface with retailers in a “uniform and consistent manner”.

ABACUS will also be working closely with Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions who provide software solutions to many of the big box retailers in the USA. Both ABACUS and Toshiba have developed a new lottery solution that is embedded in the Toshiba Retail Ecosystem. This solution enables the quick and seamless deployment of lottery products at retail.

Arkansas Scholarship Lottery Director Bishop Woosley said, “We are excited to be working with ABACUS. Their state-of-the-art solution will enable us to sell more tickets with no additional costs for consumers right where they check out, in lane in supermarkets”.

Kentucky Lottery Sales and Proceeds Set New Record in Fiscal Year 2019

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (July 26, 2019) -- In today’s meeting of the Kentucky Lottery Corporation’s Board of Directors, the group learned the results of Fiscal Year 2019 sales. These included:

  • Total sales of $1,129,655,000, which is $87.1 million more (8.4% higher) than the previous record set in FY18.
  • Transfers totaled $272.7M, of which $263.9M went to the General Fund to pay for college scholarships, grants and education programs, and $8.8M from unclaimed prizes to the KEES Reserve Fund. The General Fund transfers were $10.9 million or 4.3% more than last year.

 

Both of these numbers are record levels in the Lottery’s 30-year history.

Scratch-off tickets once again were the largest individual game category, finishing the year at $669.2 million. This is a $56 million (9.1%) increase from the previous year.

“That $56 million increase in Scratch-off sales was thanks to a continued focus on marketing and sales strategies,” said Tom Delacenserie, president and CEO of the Kentucky Lottery. Some of these strategies included the February launch of the Lottery’s first $30 Scratch-off ticket as part of the organization’s 30th anniversary, and the continued marketing of families (or collections) of like-themed games at different price points.

Internet lottery sales also showed significant growth, due in large part to the first full year of sales of Keno tickets via the iLottery platform and the introduction of new Instant Play games. iLottery sales finished the year at $26.8 million, up over 82% from the $14.7 million in FY18.

Mega Millions saw the largest percentage increase of any game, rising 58.6% ($23.3 million) to $63.1 million. The increase was due in large part to a $1.5 billion run the game saw in October 2018.

“Coming off a record year in FY18 with this kind of a sales jump in FY19 is a massive accomplishment by any set of metrics,” said Delacenserie. “Equally impressive is the dedication and commitment to excellence shown by the entire Kentucky Lottery staff and our retail partners across the Commonwealth. I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish.”

In other business, the board approved:

  • A contract extension, 2% raise and bonus structure for Delacenserie. His contract will now run through June 30, 2021.
  • A contract renewal through September 30, 2020 with Bandy Carroll Hellige for traditional advertising and related services, and
  • Rules and regulations for 12 scratch-off tickets and seven Instant Play games.

 

The next meeting of the KLC’s board of directors will be September 27th. The meeting will begin at 10:00 AM EST, and will be held at the KLC headquarters at 1011 West Main Street in Louisville. The audit committee meeting will begin at 8:30 AM EST, as well as the procurement committee at 9:00 AM EST.

34 Years in The Making: Iowa Lottery Sets Records

IOWA (July 31, 2019) -- The Iowa Lottery has just posted the best annual results in its 34-year history.

Lottery sales, proceeds to state causes, prizes to players, and retail commissions all set records in fiscal year 2019, which ended June 30. We think the results deliver on our promise to responsibly raise revenues for the state causes that are important to us all.

Our preliminary figures out today show that the Iowa Lottery generated a record $92.8 million in proceeds to state causes in FY 2019. Annual lottery sales were a record $390.9 million, while prizes to players totaled a record $241.9 million. Lottery sales commissions to the local businesses across Iowa that sell our tickets totaled $25.4 million, also a record.

Scratch games have always been the lottery's leading product category and led the way again in FY 2019, with those games accounting for a record $250.6 million in sales in Iowa.

The lottery retailer with the most sales in Iowa was again the Hy-Vee store at 20 Wilson Ave. in Cedar Rapids. That location has been the No. 1 lottery retailer in Iowa for five straight years, and it sold nearly $950,000 in lottery tickets in FY 2019.

The largest prize won by an Iowa Lottery player in FY 2019 was a $343.9 million Powerball jackpot, and six other prizes of at least $1 million also were won in the state during the year.

Sportradar and Riot Games Announce Integrity Services Partnership

NEW YORK, NY (July 30th, 2019) -- Sportradar, the global leader in analyzing and leveraging the power of sports data, and video game developer and leading esports competition organizer Riot Games, today announced an integrity services partnership.

Under the terms of the deal, Sportradar Integrity Services will monitor the global betting activity taking place with relation to domestic and international League of Legends esports competitions organized by Riot Games and report any potential integrity issues to the company.

Sportradar Integrity Services is also providing Riot Games with access, as needed, to its specialized Intelligence and Investigation Services unit, and the companies will work together to review the esports organizer’s in-house integrity policies, procedures, and future educational programs for professional esports competitors.

While Riot Games has long taken steps to safeguard the integrity of its matches, Sportradar Integrity Services will enhance and build upon these measures, using its years of sporting integrity expertise to protect League of Legends competition. On Course UK Bookmakers Face Licence Reviews

BIRMINGHAM (July 31, 2019) -- Seven bookmakers are having their licence to offer gambling reviewed after allowing a 16-year-old to place a bet.

Last month officers from the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, supported by the Gambling Commission and Trading Standards, conducted Age Verification test purchasing at Royal Ascot.

Of the 17 operators tested seven allowed a 16-year-old to place a £5 bet and now face regulatory action from the Commission.

Richard Watson, Commission Executive Director, said: “These licence reviews show how strongly we feel about underage gambling.

Every single gambling business must protect children from gambling but the on course bookmakers results have remained unacceptable.

Mr Watson said the on-course sector had a history of failing age verification exercises.

He said: “Despite various educational attempts to raise standards, by ourselves and the trade bodies, the on-course sector has historically performed poorly in both underage gambling test purchase exercises and Think 21 testing.

Pass rates have failed to meet the standards expected and the sector has consistently performed to levels below those we see in other gambling and age restricted products.  By way of example, over the past four years, the on-course sector has a pass rate of around 35% for Think 21 testing.

Mr Watson added: “We welcome the positive initiate by the local authority and the racecourse to raise standards in the gambling industry.

Cllr David Cannon, Lead Member for Public Protection at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, said: “I am delighted that our officers led and organised this test purchasing. It is important that our residents as well as visitors to the borough, are kept safe. It is not acceptable to take bets from young people and I am pleased that strong action is taking place.

Our hard working team of officers will often carry out test purchasing across the borough to ensure our residents are kept safe and that traders are abiding by the rules.

I am pleased that this hard work is paying off and the Gambling Commission are taking action against those bookmakers.
