Ohio Lottery Reports Record Sales of $4.4 Billion

Record Profits of $1.15 billion for Education

CLEVELAND, Ohio (August 5, 2019) -- Ohio Lottery Director Pat McDonald announced Monday a record sales year for the Ohio Lottery and a historic $1.15 billion transfer to the Lottery Profits Education Fund which supports K through 12, vocational and special education programs in Ohio.

Ohio Lottery traditional sales combined with video lottery net win reached a record $4.4 billion in Fiscal Year 2019, beating the previous record by more than $271 million.

The scratch off category led with sales of $1.66 billion, an increase of $62 million over the previous year. New scratch off game “Fastest Road to $1,000,000” and the “Decade of Dollars” family of scratch offs spurred the growth. The Lottery’s KENO® category reached a record of $453.9 million, besting the previous record by $32.7 million. Lottery sales also benefitted from multiple high jackpots in the Mega Millions and Powerball games, resulting in sales of $192.7 million and $143.3 million respectively.

Ohio’s seven racinos enjoyed a record year with gross gaming revenue exceeding $1 billion for the first time.

This fiscal year proved successful thanks in part to new additions to our scratch off games and the recruitment of new retailers. Our sales staff added several chain restaurant/bar locations to our retail partners. We continue to strive to make playing our games and cashing prizes fun and convenient for customers,” McDonald said.

In January, the Ohio Lottery became the first U.S. lottery jurisdiction to offer cashless purchases at the counter and self-service machines in all retail locations.

New Jersey Lottery Fiscal Year 2019 Sales Set New Record

TRENTON, NJ (August 6, 2019) – The New Jersey Lottery today announced record sales of just over $3.48 billion during the Fiscal Year that ended on June 30, 2019, an increase of approximately 5.5% compared to the prior year.

The Lottery generated more than $1.06 billion in profits for the state, which are dedicated to bolstering New Jersey’s public employee pension system for teachers, police, fire personnel, and other public employees.

The results are unaudited figures and the total amount of the final contribution to the state is expected to increase when the Lottery’s Fiscal Year 2019 financial audit is complete.

Highlights during the past year include:

  • Total sales increased to just over $3.48 billion, compared to $3.29 billion in FY18, a 5.5% increase.
  • The contribution to the state’s public employee pension system increased to $1.060 billion, compared to the final contribution amount of $1.030 billion in FY18, a 3% increase.
  • Traditional Lotto games sales (including Mega Millions, Power Ball, Pick-6, and CASH4LIFE) increased to $635 million from $516 million the prior year. The increase was driven by the record-setting $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot in October 2018, and by strong Pick-6 sales.
  • Prizes paid to New Jersey players totaled $2.08 billion, including a player from Alpha, who won $267 million in March playing Mega Millions and a family from Bayonne who won $29.5 million playing Pick-6 in December.
  • The Lottery paid commissions to more than 7,000 retailers totaling $197 million.

 

In addition, in May 2019, the Department of the Treasury and the Lottery entered into an amended service agreement with the Lottery’s sales and marketing vendor, Northstar New Jersey Lottery Group, which is projected to save approximately $100 million over the life of the contract with Northstar. The amendment to the contract increases the performance targets that are used to calculate any incentive payment to Northstar, thereby creating a higher performance bar to be reached before Northstar receives an incentive payment. The total amount of the incentive payment to Northstar for Fiscal Year 2019 will be determined when the Lottery’s financial audit is complete.

Veikkaus makes every effort to prevent similar mistakes from happening again.

“We have already begun a study with an external operator, which will take a really close look at all of our marketing processes, audit our current policies, interpretations and operations and make any necessary changes to them quickly.

Veikkaus has already made one big decision.

“We will put all of our other purchased advertising on hold until the end of September, except for lotto, Eurojackpot and Vikinglotto pot marketing, and brand and liability marketing. The decision applies to all purchased advertising space on television, radio, print, online, outdoor advertising and social media. Advertising is going down fast this week,” says Sarekoski.

“Over the next one and a half months, we will look into the smallest details of where we need to improve our processes in the future.

Particularly careful assessment is made of Veikkaus' product information practices for the so-called Red Games. They will be the subject of further specific discussion with the supervisory authority, the Police Board, once the external evaluation has been completed.

“Once the overall evaluation of our marketing is completed and the results are obtained, corrective action will be decided. Only after these decisions will we return to the new normal, Sarekoski underlines.

Colombian Gaming Regulator Coljuegos Reports More Than US$97 Million Raised in June to Support the Country’s Health System

Colombia (August 1, 2019) – Cibelae reports the president of Coljuegos, Juan B. Pérez Hidalgo, explained that the regulator of the games of luck and chance in Colombia, raised the month of June of this year, resources that They amount to $320 billion which will allow the $610 billion of revenue to be raised at the end of the year to finance the Subsidized Health System of Colombians.

The president of Coljuegos also highlighted that in the first quarter of 2019, thanks to the collection made by the entity, the different municipalities of the country's departments, as well as the governorates, $ 308,333 million were transferred through the different funds ($308,333,140,260.00) with which the health of Colombians is financed.

The departments that receive these resources to a greater extent from the games of luck and chance are: Antioquia, Valle Del Cauca, Cundinamarca, Santander, Córdoba, Nariño, Norte De Santander, Tolima, Caldas and Risaralda.

Fight against illegality

The president of Coljuegos, in the same way, highlighted the important efforts in favor of the fight against the illegal exploitation of the games of luck and chance, in which the regulator based on the articulation of institutional efforts with the Attorney General's Office , Mayors, Governments, Police, Army and other institutions, has achieved during the first half of 2019 blunt blows against organized criminal structures that steal the health resources of the most vulnerable populations in the country.

During the first six months of the year, 1,957 elements of luck and chance games that operated without authorization of Coljuegos, 1,343 illegal electronic slot machines, 42 modules of online sports betting, 572 bingos chairs have been seized.

Pennsylvania Lottery Sales and Profits Hit New Record; Proceeds to Benefit Older Pennsylvanians Top $1 Billion for Eighth Consecutive Year

Middletown, PA (August 1, 2019) -- The Pennsylvania Lottery sold a record of more than $4.5 billion in games in the 2018-19 fiscal year, from which it generated a record profit of more than $1.14 billion to benefit older Pennsylvanians. In addition, a record of more than $2.9 billion in prizes was paid to winners.

Overall results of the fiscal year, July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019, include:

  • Traditional game sales totaled more than $4.5 billion; up by $302.7 million or 7.2 percent year-to-year and breaking the previous sales record of $4.2 billion from the 2017-18 fiscal year.
  • Profit generated for the Lottery Fund totaled more than $1.14 billion, an increase of $49.6 million from the prior fiscal year. The previous record profit was set in 2015-16, which totaled $1.12 billion.
  • Traditional game prizes paid to winners grew to a record of more than $2.9 billion, an increase of $193.3 million. A total of 70 players won prizes of $1 million or more during the fiscal year.
  • More than 9,700 licensed Lottery retailers statewide, many of them small and family-owned businesses, earned an estimated $266 million in sales commissions, an increase of more than $41.8 million from the prior fiscal year, 2017-18.

 

By-category sales summaries are as follows:

  • Sales of Scratch-Off games totaled a record of more than $2.9 billion, up by $165.5 million, or 5.9 percent, from the previous year and surpassing the previous record of $2.8 billion set in 2017-18. These games accounted for over 66 percent of total sales.
  • Sales of Draw Games – including the PICK family of games and Wild Ball, Treasure Hunt, Cash 5, Match 6, Millionaire Raffle, Cash4Life®, Powerball®, and Mega Millions® – totaled close to $1.4 billion for the fiscal year, up $109.4 million, or 8.7 percent, from the previous year’s total. Highlights from the category include:
    -- Sales of multi-state games (Powerball®, Mega Millions® and Cash4Life®) grew by more than $82.2 million, or over 19 percent, from the prior year. Several large Powerball® and Mega Millions® jackpots helped to grow revenues for this category.

  • Lottery’s modernization efforts, including PA iLottery and its monitor games, Keno and Xpress Sports, generated more than $40 million in profits in their first full fiscal year:
    -- Sales through PA iLottery, online games played on a computer, tablet or mobile device, saw more than $381 million in play in its first full fiscal year, generating an estimated $31.3 million in profit. More than 91,100 players created online accounts this fiscal year, and more than $332 million in prizes were paid out to iLottery winners.
    -- Sales of monitor games, which include Keno and Xpress Sports games, totaled an estimated $46.7 million in their first full fiscal year, generating an estimated $10 million in profit.

(August 2, 2019) -- The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the West Virginia Lottery by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) for the 22nd consecutive year.

Earning this honor for 22 consecutive years is a testament to the West Virginia Lottery’s long-standing commitment to the public’s trust,” West Virginia Lottery Director John Myers said.

Our mission is to generate proceeds that benefit the people of West Virginia and our staff takes great pride in the quality, transparency, and accuracy of our financial reporting to those we serve.

The GFOA established the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program (CAFR Program) in 1945 to encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal. The goal of the program is not to assess the financial health of participating governments, but rather to ensure that users of their financial statements have the information they need to do so themselves.

Reports submitted to the CAFR program are reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and the GFOA Special Review Committee (SRC), which comprises individuals with expertise in public sector financial reporting and includes financial statement preparers, independent auditors, academics, and other finance professionals.

The West Virginia Lottery operates as a business enterprise within the framework of State laws, rules and regulations. Its mission is to generate revenue to fund programs benefiting education, senior citizens, tourism and other programs the West Virginia Legislature may determine. Since its establishment in 1986, the West Virginia Lottery has produced more than $10 billion in proceeds for the People of West Virginia.

Regulatory Announcement: OPAP S.A. Announce Appointment of New Chief Financial Officer

ATHENS, Greece (August 1, 2019) -- OPAP S.A. announces the appointment of Mr. Pavel Mucha as Chief Financial Officer. Pavel Mucha will succeed Michal Houst, who will leave the company by the end of September 2019.

Currently, Mr. Mucha is holding the position of Chief Financial Officer in Czech company Sazka, the national lottery operation of Czech Republic, which is a member of SAZKA Group.

In total, he has 26 years of professional experience, holding finance roles, in consultancy, pharmaceutical and FMCG companies. Additionally, he has four years of professional experience in the gaming market.

Mr. Mucha will officially assume his role as Chief Financial Officer at OPAP S.A., on 1 October 2019.

Global Gaming Women Names GLI’s Christie Eickelman its New President

LAS VEGAS, NV (August 6, 2019) – Global Gaming Women (GGW) has named Christie Eickelman its new President of its Board of Directors. Eickelman is Vice President of Global Marketing at Gaming Laboratories International (GLI®) and will serve as GGW’s Board President for a two-year term.

Eickelman takes the place of Phyllis A. Gilland, SVP & General Counsel at Golden Entertainment, who served as GGW’s president for the past two years. She said, “I am very proud of the number of women GGW has been able to reach out to and affect through the GGW educational and event opportunities GGW has provided, and of how we have grown GGW’s presence and structure. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the past and present Board members whose continued support is so important to mission of organization.

Eickelman was one of the founding members on the Global Gaming Women Board. Previously she served as Vice President & co-chair of the Events Committee. She said as President her primary goal will be to ensure the financial future of the organization.

Recently the Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association honored her contributions to the Indian Gaming Industry with the 2019 OIGA Modern Day Warrior Award.

Eickelman has been blazing a trail for women to follow in the gaming industry since 1992, first serving as Marketing Manager for Sodak Gaming Inc. and at Wolf Gaming LLC as Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations.

She joined GLI in 1999 as Marketing Manager, shaping GLI’s brand in North America. In 2001, she was promoted to Director of Marketing and Development, overseeing the North American development team in their daily responsibilities. In June 2007, she was promoted to Senior Director of Worldwide Marketing, and in September 2012, she was promoted to Vice President.

As GLI’s VP of Global Marketing, she directs and implements all marketing programs for GLI’s worldwide locations and for the GLI Group of companies. Her responsibilities include building the corporate brand and establishing and directing marketing functions in accordance with GLI’s policies, regulations and sound business practices.

In 2005, she was selected as a Great Woman in Gaming by Casino Enterprise Management magazine, and in 2008, Global Gaming Business magazine named her one of the 25 People to Watch in Gaming.

How We’ve Grown! Australasian Gaming Expo Turns 30
