Colorado Lottery Earns Level 2 Responsible Gaming Certification from World Lottery Association

PUEBLO, CO (November 19, 2019) -- The Colorado Lottery has announced that it has earned the World Lottery Association (WLA) Responsible Gaming (RG) Level 2 Certification. To achieve a Level 2 certification, the Colorado Lottery had to complete a self-assessment and identify RG programs to be implemented consistent with the WLA’s responsible gaming principles. The Colorado Lottery joined WLA in 2018, attaining Level 1 certification last November.

Our commitment to responsible gaming ensures not only that the public is protected, but also that the revenues created by the Colorado Lottery are sustained for the public good and that Colorado’s greatest assets are preserved,” said Tom Seaver, Colorado Lottery director.

Pollard Banner

As one of the biggest benefactors to the Colorado way of life, we recognize that this is the opportune time to adopt the principles of the Responsible Gaming Framework.

The Seven Responsible Gaming Principles serve as the foundation for the WLA Responsible Gaming Framework. The Framework consists of four levels of achievement around 10 different Program elements. Members then implement a broad scope of commitments and actions that must translate into actual programs that include research, employee education, retailer education, game design, promotions, advertising and marketing communications, player education, treatment referral, stakeholder engagement, reporting and measurement.

The Panel considers your (Colorado Lottery’s) submission to be a blueprint for other lotteries seeking to be certified at that level,” said Lynne Roiter, President/CEO of Loto-Quebec and evaluation Panel member, in an email.

This certification represents an important milestone and hard work for the Colorado Lottery and Director Tom Seaver, placing the Colorado Lottery in the top 15 U.S. lotteries for their commitment to responsible gaming. No U.S. Lottery has achieved a Level 5 certification, only eight are at Level 4, five at Level 3, and two at Level 2, including the Colorado Lottery.

Each of the four levels of achievement reflects how successfully a lottery has integrated the RG Principles into daily operations at different stages of implementation. The more advanced the responsible gaming program, the higher the level of achievement.

The four levels in the WLA RG Framework are:

  • Level 1: Commitment – by becoming a member of the WLA, lottery members agree to embrace the WLA RG Principles, which fulfill the Level 1 certification.
  • Level 2: Self-Assessment and Gap Analysis – members complete a self-assessment and determine which RG programs must be implemented to ensure the organization addresses all the Principles.
  • Level 3: Planning and Implementation – members must develop a plan, a timetable and a budget to implement specific RG programs.
  • Level 4: Continuous Improvement – members implement specific programs into their day-to-day operations and are continuously improving their programs.

The World Lottery Association (WLA) is an international trade organization, based in Switzerland, which serves the interests of state-authorized lotteries and suppliers to the global lottery industry.

About Colorado Lottery Proceeds

Svenska Spel's Tool for Identifying and Communicating with Risk Players, is Spreading Internationally; Switzerland is Fourth Country to Adopt Playscan Tool

VISBY, Sweden (November 28, 2019) -- Playscan, Svenska Spel's tool for identifying and communicating with risk players, is spreading internationally. Following an agreement with the Norwegian gaming company Norsk Tipping, the French La Française des Jeux and the Swedish Million Lottery, the Swiss Société de la Loterie de la Suisse Romande has now also chosen to use Playscan.

After Norway, France and Sweden, Switzerland is the fourth country to choose the gaming responsibility tool Playscan. At the Swiss Société de la Loterie de la Suisse Romande, the system went live on Monday. An important success factor is the large number of users. Because Playscan is present at several large gaming companies, up to 6 million players are analyzed annually.

It gives us deep insights about risk gambling. For example, we have very good opportunities to test alternative types of communication with customers and learn what gives the best effect. The greater the amount of user data, the better the predictions for the individual player,” says Annika Hjälm, Site Manager for Playscan at Svenska Spel.

The gaming companies that use Playscan get a complete solution with both statistical analysis of gaming behaviour, a complete communication interface and continuous updates of the tool. In addition, the companies can measure the impact and development of their efforts against risky gambling.

Playscan follows the customers on an individual level. The assessment of the risk level is based on the player's own behaviour rather than general conclusions. This means that the advice given is directly linked to the individual customer's gaming behaviour and therefore becomes more relevant.

And the tool seems to reach the right people. In 2016, an independent evaluation of Playscan was made based on data from nearly 10,000 users. It showed that it was precisely people with a higher risk of excessive gambling who used Playscan the most. But does this also mean that the tool helps the risk players to address their problems?

Behavioural change is a process that can take a very long time. But all the research shows that it is all the time to "poke" at the problem players, give them insight and motivation to change their behaviour. And that's what Playscan does. Now we continue to explore how we can best benefit from all the insights we gain through the tool. Going forward, we are developing new functionality in order to provide our customers with the most secure and fun gaming experience in real time,” says Annika Hjälm.

People's Postcode Lottery Player Funding Passes £500 Million Barrier

Charities and their ambassadors have sent messages of thanks to our players for helping us to reach an amazing milestone

UNITED KINGDOM (December 2, 2019) -- Players of People's Postcode Lottery have now raised an extraordinary £500 Million for charities and good causes.

This money has supported more than 7,500 deserving causes. These have ranged from grassroots community groups, to national organisations such as Maggie's, WWF-UK and Dogs Trust.

Naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough said, "I would like to extend my thanks to the players of People's Postcode Lottery for the remarkable contribution they make to conservation and other charitable causes, which as of today has totalled £500 Million - a truly staggering amount.

"As a vice-president of Fauna & Flora International - one of the many charities that benefit from players' support - I understand very well just what this support means for our planet's most threatened species and ecosystems."

Dame Emma Thompson, ambassador for the Helen Bamber Foundation, added, "I really do not know where we would be without the support of players of People's Postcode Lottery - my gratitude to them for their generosity knows no bounds. They have helped the Helen Bamber Foundation achieve more than I can possibly describe."

In addition to Sir David and Dame Emma, other high-profile celebrities including Hollywood actor George Clooney, Oscar winner Olivia Colman, and BAFTA winner Carey Mulligan have also sent their thanks to People's Postcode Lottery players.

Maggie's was one of the first charities to benefit from support from players. It provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends at centres across Britain.

Laura Lee, Maggie's Chief Executive, said, "For players of People's Postcode Lottery to have raised £500 Million for good causes such as Maggie's is phenomenal.

"I am so grateful for their continued generosity for over 10 years as it has helped us to provide life-changing support for thousands of people living with cancer across Britain, including workshops designed specifically to help people navigate their closest relationships.

"I am sure every organisation that works with People's Postcode Lottery will join me in saying a massive thank you to each and every player for their crucial role in helping us to make such a difference to people's lives."

Jan McLoughlin, PDSA Director General, said, "Since 2013, players of People's Postcode Lottery have provided incredible support to PDSA, enabling us to deliver vital lifesaving veterinary care.

"Their generosity has enabled our dedicated vets, nurses, staff and volunteers to be there for sick and injured pets across the country when they need us most."

Vitally Important Milestone

Clara Govier, Managing Director at People's Postcode Lottery, said, "This is a vitally important milestone for charities across Britain and beyond.

"By raising more than £500 Million for good causes, our players are making a real difference to people's lives. This simply couldn't have been achieved without them.

"So, my message to those millions of players is simple - a heartfelt thank you. People's Postcode Lottery was created to raise funds for charities and good causes, and we'll continue to work tirelessly to do exactly that."
