Arkansas Scholarship Lottery Issues Fraud, Scam Alert

logo

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (January 14, 2021) -- The Arkansas Scholarship Lottery reminds players to stay aware and alert as they play lottery games. Fraud accounts and scammers never take a break, especially when jackpots get really high.

The Mega Millions® jackpot for tomorrow has climbed to $750 million, and Saturday’s Powerball® jackpot stands at $640 million.

“Fake lottery scams are fairly common,” said ASL Director Eric Hagler. “You can receive a phone call, email, text and even social media messages that are seemingly real. Do not be fooled. Stay aware and play responsibly.”

Hagler said the only time lottery representatives might be contacting players is to notify them that they have won a Second-Chance Promotion or a Play It Again® drawing through The Club. Otherwise players must come forward to claim their prize.

GLI 300x250

“If players who joined The Club are skeptical when notified, we encourage them to call the lottery to confirm,” he said. “A legitimate lottery official never asks winners to pay taxes upfront. All federal and state taxes are paid before the lottery releases the money to the winner.”

Also, if a person did not buy a lottery ticket, he cannot win a lottery prize. If you have been contacted by someone claiming you won a lottery jackpot, but you have never purchased a ticket, it is a scam.

Lotteries of foreign countries are illegal in the United States. If you have been contacted by a lottery claiming to be affiliated with the government of another country, it is a scam.

If you think you have been a victim of fraud or attempted fraud by someone posing as a representative of the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery, please report it to the Arkansas Lottery Security hotline at 1-888-606-6292 and/or the Arkansas Attorney General’s office at 1-800-482-8982.

About the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery

More than 92 cents of every dollar of ASL revenue goes to prizes, scholarships, retailer commissions, and other expenses in Arkansas.

Since 2009, the lottery has raised more than $1 billion in proceeds for scholarships. More than 600,000 college scholarships have been awarded to Arkansans.

The lottery has awarded more than $3.4 billion in prizes to players, about $298 million in retailer commissions and provided more than $140 million in state and federal tax revenue.

Fans of jackpots have four new games offering chances to win one instantly

RALEIGH, NC (January 17, 2021) – The Education Lottery launches four new Fast Play games Sunday that give those who enjoy playing to win jackpots more chances to win one instantly.

Fast Play is the lottery’s newest offering of a jackpot game. While Mega Millions and Powerball each offer jackpots in two drawings a week, the always-growing, rolling Fast Play jackpots can be won instantly when someone buys a ticket at a store.

Players have won jackpots 23 times, with prizes ranging up to $691,417, since Fast Play launched in September. Prizes in the game average $1.2 million a week. The latest win came Saturday at a New Bern convenience store where someone won a $373,741 jackpot on a $5 Rockin Bingo ticket.

Games are easy to play. There are no play slips to fill out or numbers to select, and no drawings to wait on. Players can see immediately if they won, using “how to play” information printed on each ticket. A how to play video is also available here.

Mark Michalko, executive director of the Education Lottery, said the games have proved popular in their first months of play and are helping the lottery increase its sales this year and raise additional monies for education.

“You will now have eight Fast Play games to choose from,” said Michalko. “These are exciting new games because the jackpot goes up with each ticket purchased until someone wins it. It’s great to see those who like lottery games having fun and winning nice prizes.

As of 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, the Fast Play jackpot stood at $386,805, and growing.

The four new games are two $2 games, Bingo Bucks and Frosty 50s, and two $5 games, Blizzard Bingo and Red Hot Numbers.

Odds of winning prizes vary depending on the type of game and its prize. The odds of winning the Fast Play jackpot are 1 in 240,000.

Ticket sales from Fast Play games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $725 million a year for education. For details on how lottery funds have helped all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.
