ALEA Virtual Meeting of the Responsible Gaming Unit: Continuity in Listening and Treatment During the COVID-19 Crisis

CÓRDOBA, Argentina  — The members of the Coordinating Unit for Social Responsibility and Responsible Gaming held a virtual meeting on April 22 to carry out, in the first place, a sharing on the situation of the demand for 0-800 and the attention of the Gaming programs Responsible.

Since, from March 20 to the present day, the lottery institutes of the 23 provinces and the CABA ceased their activities complying with the Preventive and Mandatory Social Isolation decreed by the National Government and that, since then and until now, the raffles are suspended, agencies, lounges, casinos and racetracks remain closed throughout the country. In this unusual context, the question about the demand about the player orientation numbers was answered by each of the participants.

In this sense, the representatives of the regulatory agencies of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Catamarca, Córdoba, Entre Ríos, Jujuy, La Rioja, Misiones, Neuquén, Río Negro, San Juan, San Luis, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego agreed. noting that the 0-800 had not received a greater number of inquiries about pathological gambling and that the demand was within the usual average of calls.

They were offered the use of communication tools such as video calls or WhatsApp, which were accepted in many of the cases, allowing their continuity.

And, in general, regarding the queries received, among the wrong calls, there was a significant group that asked about the reopening of the agencies and of game rooms, and others related to the procedures of the Self-Exclusion Regimes. There were no urgent or emerging calls.

The main health problem associated with the Covid-19 pandemic in the provinces of La Rioja and Jujuy, according to the participants’ comments, is the high number of dengue cases.

Also, the concern about the deterioration of the economic and social situation, due to the suspension of activities in all areas.

The proliferation of illegal gambling was another negative situation shared with concern.

Then a review was made of the observations on the National Survey of Pathological Gambling and it was agreed to send them to the President of the SR Unit, Dr. Raúl Quiroga, from the Lottery of Córdoba SE, for the subsequent qualitative analysis.

To continue the development of the strategic affairs of the unit, a new virtual meeting is planned to be held shortly.
