Press release from the Swiss Federal Gaming Board

BERN, Switzerland (September 24, 2021) – at the end of December 2024, all previously granted licenses by Swiss casinos will expire. At its meeting on September 17, 2021, the Federal Council was informed about the new licensing schedule. In April 2022, the Federal Council is expected to take fundamental decisions regarding the award of new casino licenses. It is also planned that he will decide on the granting of the licenses in October 2023.

In 2002, 2003, and 2012 the Federal Council granted a total of 21 casinos licenses to operate casino games. In 2019, 2020 and 2021, based on the new Federal Law on Money Games, he expanded the licenses of eleven of these casinos to include the right to play casino games online. All licenses and license extensions granted will expire on December 31, 2024. The Federal Council must therefore reassign casino licenses before this deadline expires. The Swiss Federal Gaming Board (ESBK) is charged with instructing the licensing procedure in accordance with the Gaming Act.

The ESBK prepares a report on the Swiss casino landscape with recommendations regarding the award of new casino licenses. Based on this, the Federal Council is expected to make fundamental decisions in April 2022 – in particular on the number and type of concessions to be awarded and the award procedure. The tendering process for submitting license applications is to be carried out between May 2022 and September 2022. The Federal Council will then probably decide on the award of the concessions in October 2023.
