Dutch Gambling Addiction Prevention Research Program Launched
The Gaming Authority (Ksa) previously selected ZonMw to develop this program. The aim of the research program ‘Prevention of gambling addiction is to contribute to the prevention and treatment of gambling addiction, gambling-related damage, and gambling problems by developing new knowledge and stimulating its use.
The program will run for 3 years (2022-2025). The research program was preceded by a literature study made by knowledge institute Trimbos. This mapped out what research has already been done and what research is still needed. The first funding round for project proposals is expected shortly. ZonMw strives for a mix of short-term projects that quickly lead to results and projects that yield valuable knowledge in the long term.
Addiction Prevention Fund
The research program is financed by the Addiction Prevention Fund (Vpf). The Ksa (manager of the fund) and the ministries of Justice and Security (responsible for games of chance policy) and Health, Welfare and Sport (responsible for addiction care) work closely together in this. The Addiction Prevention Fund was created as a result of the Remote Gambling Act and is financed by an extension of the gambling levy on providers of high-risk games of chance. One of the spending goals of the VPF is research into the prevention and treatment of gambling addiction.
