SIGMA Aims to Prevent and Combat Fraud in the Sports Betting Market and the Manipulation of Competitions of This Type
SPAIN (July 5, 2024) — The Global Betting Market Investigation Service (SIGMA) aims to prevent and combat fraud in the sports betting market and the manipulation of competitions of this type. The effectiveness of the Service requires the adhesion of those actors most interested in eradicating practices that erode the integrity of sport and constitute an attack on the values of fair play and equity that this activity represents. To date, the Higher Sports Council, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, the Professional Football League, the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation, the Spanish Footballers’ Association, as well as the National Police, the Civil Guard and the Ertzaintza have adhered to the Service.
For this reason, in compliance with the provisions of the ninth additional provision of Law 13/2011, of May 27, on the regulation of gambling, the General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling has adopted the Resolution of June 28, 2024, approving the adhesion of gambling operators holding individual licenses for horse racing or sports betting in any of its modalities to the global research service of the betting market.
In compliance with this Resolution, operators must send information regarding irregular or suspicious sports bets from the moment they become aware of a practice that could be fraudulent in nature, as well as respond to requests for any information deemed necessary in relation to the alerts entered into the Service.
With this resolution, the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling takes a further step in its commitment to combat corruption linked to the manipulation of sports competitions and the often resulting fraud in betting on such events.
