ROSTOCK, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany (January 7, 2023) — Even in the challenging year 2022, the lottery players from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania did not let their joy of playing be taken away. Players used a total of almost 132 million euros for the LOTTO Mecklenburg-Vorpommern lotteries. This is the highest stake since the Lotto und Toto management company was founded in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 1991 and surpasses the strong result from 2021 (127 million).

Three new millionaires

27 players won big prizes of over 50,000 euros. In 2021 there were 31. The biggest prize of 3,536,411.70 euros in LOTTO 6aus49 went to a lucky guy from Ludwigslust Parchim at the beginning of July. A total of three million prizes were won in 2022. Since the foundation of the Lotto und Toto management company in MV in 1991, MV has now had a total of 57 Lotto millionaires. Ten players won the Eurojackpot. The highest prize in the Eurojackpot went to the Hanseatic city of Rostock at the end of December, amounting to EUR 1,008,723.90. Last year, prizes of around 48 million euros were paid out in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

“Despite all the adversities that 2022 brought with it, the players played the lottery to a large extent,” says Dr. Ait Stapelfeld, Managing Director of LOTTO Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. “Lotto is a reliable constant for many – and perhaps now more than ever connected with the desire to be able to fulfill dreams.”

The online game continues to grow

In 2022, the majority of stakes, around 82 percent, came from the approximately 490 LOTTO acceptance points. The people from MV are also happy to submit their tips online with growing enthusiasm. Sales via lottomv.de and the LOTTO MV app increased by around 20 percent in 2022.

In 2022, too, the players preferred to bet on the classic LOTTO 6aus49 (48 percent). The European lottery Eurojackpot took second place among the most popular lotteries based on the stakes placed, followed by the additional lottery Spiel 77.

Responsibility for Mecklenburg-West Pomerania

In October 2022, certification according to the WLA (World Lottery Association) standard 2020 confirmed that the range of games offered by LOTTO Mecklenburg-West Pomerania is safe. Back in May, LOTTO Mecklenburg-West Pomerania passed the European Lotteries test for responsible gaming.

However, as a state government company, LOTTO MV is not only responsible for its customers and employees, but also for the common good in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A total of around 51 million euros were made available via LOTTO Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2022. The management company Lotto und Toto alone paid lottery taxes of around 23 million euros to the state. Around another 26 million euros flow directly into the state budget as so-called special-purpose income. With this income, the departments of the state government can support a variety of non-profit, social, cultural or sporting projects.

In addition, the GlücksSpirale and Sieger-Chance lotteries generated a further special-purpose income of around EUR 894,000. Around 29 percent of these funds also went directly to the Olympic Sports Confederation, the federal working group for non-statutory welfare, in 2022

German Foundation for Monument Protection and 12.5 percent to the Evangelical Lutheran Church and North Church for the preservation of the village churches. Around 2 million euros were donated by the environmental lottery BIN GO! of special-purpose income and passed on to the North German Foundation for Environment and Development, which in 2022 alone will support 104 projects in MV with BIN GO! – Funds could promote.

The company also assumes responsibility for environmental and climate protection. Savings and modernization work within the company headquarters help to achieve the company’s sustainability goals.

Acceptance points in focus

“We want to achieve a similarly good result again in 2023,” says Dr. Ait Stapelfeld into the future. “But of course we are also concerned that fewer lottos will be played due to the general economic conditions.” LOTTO Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will focus on supporting the acceptance points. In order to support its partners in the currently difficult times, the management company supported them with a total donation of almost half a million euros at the end of 2022. “The acceptance points are important contractual partners for us. The majority are smaller shops with around two to three jobs, which are currently under enormous financial pressure. If they disappear, many town centers will lose face and lottery players will lose their contact point.”
