Proposed Cashless Gambling Cards Would be Capped at $1500 a Day
SYDNEY, NSW, Australia (January 9, 2023) — The cashless gaming cards proposed by the NSW premier could have a daily spending limit of between $1000 and $1500, according to a local media report.
Local TV channel 9 News reports Dominic Perrottet last week confirmed the cards, which would be required to use poker machines across the state, would have a cap.
The exact amount the premier will be looking at enforcing was revealed this afternoon on Chris O’Keefe’s first drive show on 2GB.
When asked about the limit, NSW Opposition Leader Chris Minns compared the scheme to Tasmania’s, which has a
$100-a-day limit.
The cashless cards are part of Perrottet’s push for gambling reform but have proved a point of contention in the lead-up to the state election in March.
One of the proposal’s loudest critics comes from within the premier’s own party.
Transport and Veterans Minister David Elliott, who is retiring at the next election, argues the card will shift the issue.
“What you’ll see is people just walking out of registered clubs and pubs and walking down the road and not putting the 20 bucks after bowls in a poker machine, but going … to the newsagency and buying 20 bucks worth of scratchies,” he said last week.
There is also pushback from pubs and clubs across the state as many of the venues’ revenue comes from poker machines.
