General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling Report GGR Increase for Q4 of 27.07% and 78.16% Year over Year
SPAIN (March 16, 2023) — The gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the quarter was € 313.31 million, an increase of 27.07% quarter over quarter and 78.16% year over year.
Regarding the rest of the main figures, deposits and withdrawals of the players, their variation rates rise in relation to the previous year, 31.66% and 17.21% respectively. With regard to the previous quarter, deposits grew 14.80% and withdrawals 12.81%. Marketing expenditure increases 30.10% quarter over quarter and new accounts experienced a growth with respect to the previous quarter, 23.85%. Details are shown in Table 1.
In the analysis of the GGR by game segments, it is observed that:
The € 313.31 million of GGR are distributed among € 141.35 million in Betting (45.12%); € 3.62 million in Bingo (1.16%); € 142.25 million in Casino (45.40%); € 0.03 million in Contests (0.01%) and € 26.05 million in Poker (8.32%).
The betting segment has a positive variation rate of 52.77% quarter over quarter and 223.40% year over year. There is a rise with respect to the previous quarter in pre-match, 108.54% and in-played sportsbook, 13.79%. Other bettings have increased 86.80% this quarter, and horse betting 63.60%.
Bingo has experienced a decrease of -1.53% quarter over quarter and -11.52% year over year.
In the casino segment, there has been a rise of 11.17% quarter over quarter and an annual variation rate of 32.37%. Slots have increased by 27.29% and life roulette by 51.65% year over year. Quarter over quarter, conventional, live roulette and slots have growth of 10.21%, 22.53% and 5.28%, respectively.
Contests experienced a rise of 1.96% quarter over quarter and a decrease of -36.73% year over year. This segment continued an irregular behaviour with annual variation rates in the fourth quarter of 2060.26% in 2019; 75.86% in 2020; -95.65% in 2021.
Poker presents an increase of 18.58% quarter over quarter and 26.83% year over year. The poker tournament had a positive variation rate of 20.52% quarter over quarter and 38.16% year over year. Poker cash also increases by 14.40% compared to the previous quarter and 7% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
As a summary, the percentage distribution of the GGR for the different segments in this quarter of the period from 2019 to 2022 is shown in Table 2.
Marketing expenses have been € 106.40 million in the last quarter. It may be broken down into € 14.55 million in affiliation expenses; € 1.55 million for sponsorship; promotions € 51.65; and advertising € 38.65 million. Compared to the previous quarter, marketing expenses increased by 30.10% and 13.93% in annual variation. Advertising expenses experienced a growth of 32.15% quarter over quarter and 9.01% year over year. Sponsorship increases 350.98% quarter over quarter and 22.85% year over year. Affiliates grew 51.77% quarter over quarter and 47.88% year over year. Promotions also increase by 32.15% with regard to the previous quarter and 9.01 with regard to the previous year. Promotions are broken down into the cost of bonus included in prizes, € 15.20 million and the cost of bonus not included in prizes, € 36.45 million.
The monthly average of active game accounts is 1,185,452; which implies an increase of 21.10% quarter over quarter and an increase of 22.86% year over year. The monthly average of the new game accounts is 131,095; with a growth of 23.85% quarter over quarter and a decline of -21.56% year over year.
For this quarter, there are 78 licensed operators and the number of active operators by segment is:
