PA Gaming Control Board Reports 7.5% Revenue Increase In August

HARRISBURG, PA:  The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported today that the combined total revenue generated from all forms of gaming, along with fantasy contests, during August 2023 was $457,153,095, an increase of 7.47% compared to revenue generated in August 2022.

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the PGCB include slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests and video gaming terminals (VGTs). The PGCB has posted separate reports for these types of gaming on its website, https://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/.

Total tax revenue generated collectively through all forms of gaming and fantasy contests was $189,412,053* during August 2023.

The PGCB is also providing a synopsis of revenue year-over-year by types of games:

Slot Machine Revenue

August’s revenue from slot machines was $203,192,328, 0.95% increase in revenue when compared to the $201,277,627 generated in August 2022.

The number of slot machines in operation in August 2023 was 25,206 compared to 25,592 at the casinos in August 2022.

 Tax revenue from the play of slots machines in August 2023 was $102,847,638*.

 Retail Table Games Revenue

Retail Table games revenue for August 2023 was up year over year with revenue of $82,676,497, an increase of 5.38% from August 2022 when revenue was $78,453,939.

Total tax revenue from table games play during August 2023 was $13,513,405*.

 Internet Casino-Type Gaming (iGaming) Revenue

Casino games offered online generated gross revenue of $144,980,774 during August 2023 compared to $107,180,341 in August 2022, an increase of 35.27%.

 Tax revenue generated from internet gaming play during August 2023 was $63,190,517*.

Sports Wagering Revenue

August 2023, total sports wagering handle was $393,007,298 or 8.25% above the August 2022 total of $363,046,972. At the same time, the taxable revenue figure for August 2023 was $22,026,307, or 35.13% lower when compared to August 2022, when taxable revenue was $33,953,300.

 Tax revenue generated from sports wagering during August 2023 was $7,929,470*.

 Video Gaming Terminals

Total adjusted revenue for August 2023 for video gaming terminals (VGTs) was $3,484,985, or 5.40% lower than August 2022 when revenue was $3,683,907. By the close of August 2023, VGT Terminal Operators were operating the maximum permitted five machines at 69 qualified truck stop establishments, compared to five machines at 66 establishments at this time last year.

Tax revenue collected from the play of VGTs in August 2023 was $1,812,192*.

Fantasy Contests

Fantasy Contests revenue was $792,206 in August 2023, a decrease of 5.81% over August 2022, when revenue was $841,087.

Tax revenue collected from the play of Fantasy Contests in August 2023 was $118,831*.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of gambling involving 17 land-based casinos, online casino games, retail and online sports wagering, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) at qualified truck stops, along with the regulation of online fantasy sports contests.
