Gaming Control Board Reports 7.3% Revenue Increase In October

Sports Wagering handle tops $800 million for first time

HARRISBURG, PA:  The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported today that the combined total revenue generated from all forms of gaming, along with fantasy contests, during October 2023 was $483,006,194, an increase of 7.28% compared to revenue generated in October 2022.

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the PGCB include slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests and video gaming terminals (VGTs). The PGCB has posted separate reports for these types of gaming on its website, https://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/.

Total tax revenue generated collectively through all forms of gaming and fantasy contests was $196,913,235* during October 2023.

The PGCB is also providing a synopsis of revenue year-over-year by types of games:

Slot Machine Revenue

October’s revenue from slot machines was $192,519,568, a 3.28% decrease in revenue when compared to the $199,049,045 generated in October 2022.

The number of slot machines in operation in October 2023 was 24,794 compared to 25,497 at the casinos in October 2022.

Tax revenue from the play of slots machines in October 2023 was $97,618,945*.

 Retail Table Games Revenue

Retail Table games revenue for October 2023 was $81,458,654, an increase of 2.02% from October 2022 when revenue was $79,848,316.

Total tax revenue from table games play during October 2023 was $13,306,434*.

Internet Casino-Type Gaming (iGaming) Revenue

Casino games offered online generated monthly gross revenue totaling $154,818,943 during October 2023 compared to $124,507,915 in October 2022, an increase of 24.34%.

Tax revenue generated from internet gaming play during October 2023 was $66,484,708*.

Sports Wagering Revenue

October 2023, total sports wagering handle set a new monthly record with $829,002,595 or 4% above the October 2022 total of $797,124,732 which was the previous high.

At the same time, the taxable revenue figure for October 2023 was $48,150,055, or 18.85% higher when compared to October 2022, when taxable revenue was $40,514,020.

Tax revenue generated from sports wagering during October 2023 was $17,334,020*.

Video Gaming Terminals

Total adjusted revenue for October 2023 for video gaming terminals (VGTs) was $3,406,170, or 3.99% lower than October 2022 when revenue was $3,547,774. By the close of October 2023, VGT Terminal Operators were operating the maximum permitted five machines at 71 qualified truck stop establishments, compared to five machines at 67 establishments at this time last year.

Tax revenue collected from the play of VGTs in October 2023 was $1,771,208*.

Fantasy Contests

Fantasy Contests revenue was $2,652,804 in October 2023, a decrease of 4.3% over October 2022, when revenue was $2,771,894.

Tax revenue collected from the play of Fantasy Contests in October 2023 was $397,921*.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of gambling involving 17 land-based casinos, online casino games, retail and online sports wagering, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) at qualified truck stops, along with the regulation of online fantasy sports contests.
