Surge in Macau Premium Mass Bets Overtakes 2019 Level: Citigroup
MACAU, SAR (November 20, 2023) — Total wagers from the premium mass segment have recently appeared to be higher than the 2019 level, with an observed increase of at least 9 percent, according to a survey conducted by Citigroup.
The ‘Macau News Agency‘ reported that in a note published on Sunday, analysts George Choi and Ryan Cheung said that a recent survey conducted during the Macau Grand Prix weekend showed this achievement came with 21 percent fewer players.
“This translates into a significant 37 percent increase in average wager per player,” said the pair. The survey outcome also suggests high player quality, with the average minimum bet across Macau being 10 percent higher compared to 2019, at HKD2,025 (MOP2078/ US$260) versus HKD1,845.
As the survey suggested, Galaxy Entertainment Group seemed to have maintained its “pole position” in November, accounting for 38 percent of the market, up from 25 percent in October.
“We counted a total of 68 players at the Horizon room at GM, wagering a total of HKD1,886,000,” said the analysts, adding that they spotted at least five whales there—the most among the casinos surveyed. Trailing behind was Sands China, with a 20 percent market share.
“The Apex room at Plaza continues to stay at the top of our premium mass survey with a wager per player of HKD63,077,” the analysts added.
On the other hand, Wynn Macau appeared to be “relatively quiet”, with its market share falling from 20 percent to 14 percent month on month.
