Washington D.C. Sets Tentative Date for FanDuel to Take Over Sports Betting

April 9, 2024 | Sports Betting

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 8, 2024) — According to local media reports just two weeks after striking the deal with FanDuel, Washington appears to have enough in place to hand the keys over officially. GambetDC has been the sole betting operator in the district since it legalized sports betting in 2020, but app issues, noncompetitive odds and an overall inferior product have been the defining features during GambetDC’s tenure.

As a result, D.C. got the country’s No. 1 sportsbook to take over all operations, including GambetDC’s betting kiosks. GambetDC will take wagers through April 14, after which everything will switch over to FanDuel.

However,  ‘OddsShopper‘ reports that There are some logistical concerns for the reason for the “tentative” date. For one, accounts will not move over automatically; bettors will have to withdraw funds from GambetDC and deposit them into FanDuel. They will have until Oct. 15 to do so, but GambetDC will permanently deactivate all accounts on that date.

Futures placed before April 15 will stay open until the bet settles so long as they settle before July 1. Any futures with a later date of settlement will be refunded.

Another big piece of news came from a D.C. city councilor, who said that BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook could make the move into online operations in Washington at some point. He has proposed a bill to do so already. Caesars and BetMGM have retail locations in the city at sporting venues, so there is already some infrastructure.
