AUSTRALIA (August 12, 2024) — The Australian Labor Party faces significant internal pressure as it contemplates its response to the gambling reforms recommended by the late MP Peta Murphy. The inquiry chaired by Murphy, which focused on online gambling harm, recommended a complete ban on gambling advertising and related incentives, to be implemented gradually over three years. This recommendation has gained support from various public figures, including former prime ministers and premiers, and is seen as essential from a public health standpoint.

However, there are indications that the government might be considering a less comprehensive, partial ban, which has drawn criticism for potentially being ineffective. Labor backbenchers and anti-gambling advocates, such as Tim Costello of the Alliance for Gambling Reform, are urging the government to fully adopt Murphy’s recommendations, warning that anything less could lead to internal conflict within the party.

On the other side of the debate, gambling companies, sporting codes, and media organizations are resisting a total ban, arguing that it would negatively impact sports broadcasting and community investments. They also claim that it could drive gamblers to illegal platforms.

The government has yet to finalize its position, with further consultations ongoing, but the issue is shaping up to be a significant test of Labor’s commitment to tackling gambling harm in Australia.
