Slimer Stars in New Kentucky Lottery Commercial Promoting Ghostbusters Scratch-Offs
September 16, 2024 — Over the past few weeks, several readers of Ghostbusters News have informed us that the Kentucky Lottery has launched a series of Ghostbusters-themed scratch-offs, offering players the chance to win up to $200,000!
Although we initially hadn’t planned to cover this news due to its similarities to previously reported lottery tie-ins in Michigan and Indiana, the Kentucky Lottery has managed to stand out, largely thanks to the release of a commercial approved by Columbia Pictures Ghost Corps, which features the same CGI version of Slimer used in the production of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
The premise of the spot is simple: Slimer, in classic form, is causing chaos while indulging in junk food behind the counter of a convenience store, surprising a customer who merely wants to buy some scratch-offs. Amusingly, the Onionhead is sporting a personalized nametag, implying that he’s an employee—leading us to wonder about Kentucky’s seemingly relaxed hiring practices!
Taking the promotion even further, the Kentucky Lottery slimed its own headquarters, with imagery of ectoplasm hanging from the rooftop and windows, adding an extra layer of ghostly fun to the campaign.
“It’s really fun to watch folks slow down as they see the building. It’s like they normally drive. They don’t see what’s on either side of the road,” CEO and president Mary Harville told local news affiliate WLKY. “And here they’re braking and say, ‘What is it they’re doing at the Kentucky Lottery?’ So, we hope to bring a little excitement for our games, and we hope to bring a little fun to the neighborhood. And I think that’s happening.”
