Scam Alert: Players Warned About Programs that “Beat” the Lottery

TRENTON (Oct. 5, 2023) – The Powerball jackpot is now $1.4 billion, the third-highest Powerball jackpot in history. One New Jersey ticketholder matched four of the five white balls and the Powerball drawn winning the $50,000 third-tier prize. That ticket was sold at Walmart #3774, 1840 South Black Horse Pike, Williamstown in Gloucester County. The winning numbers for the Wednesday, October 4, drawing were: 09, 35, 54, 63 and 64. The Power Ball number was 01, and the Power Play was 2X. The Double Play drawing results were: 12, 30, 39, 64 and 67. The Double Play Ball number was 22.

As players nationwide scramble to take home this sky-scraping jackpot, dishonest actors use the opportunity to peddle scams under the guise of “beating the lottery,” promising a statistical certainty of inning.

While New Jersey Lottery is proud of its many and frequent winners, we want to remind players that there is no guaranteed way to ensure positive returns. One recent attempted scam is selling software – a program that generates random numbers for you – which promises to have advanced statistical knowledge of expected upcoming lottery results. This is simply untrue.

Multiple measures are in place to certify that each lottery drawing is random, independent, and conducted without foul play. Attentive players may scour lottery results looking for patterns, numbers that appear more or less likely to occur, as well as other data points and develop a plan to play based on that information. We welcome fun superstition, but stress that any specific combination of numbers is no more or less likely to come up than any other combination of numbers.

Players are reminded that Lottery games are for fun and entertainment – it only takes one ticket to get in the game. The Lottery promotes responsible play through its everyday practices, cooperation with the Council on Compulsive Gambling of NJ, and by promoting the Council’s helpline phone number, 1-800-GAMBLER, on all Lottery  marketing and advertising materials.
