Macau: Suspicious Transaction Reports in Casinos Jump 170% in First 9 Months of 2023
MACAU, SAR (October 18, 2023) — The number of suspicious transaction reports (STRs) filed by gaming operators has soared by 169.6 per cent year-on-year in the first nine months of the year, according to data from the Financial Intelligence Office (GIF).
The Macau News Agency (MNA) report the GIF said the increase, from 866 to 2,335 STRs in the gaming sector, comes as the industry’s recovery gained momentum after the end of pandemic restrictions in early January, with gross gaming revenue jumping 305 per cent year-on-year in the first nine months of 2023.
The total number of STRs reached 3,178, marking an 89.5 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2022, with gaming-related reports accounting for 73.5 percent of the total.
STRs from financial institutions and insurance companies remained relatively unchanged, with a slight increase from 611 to 617.
