LOTTO Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Takes Stock of the Record Year 2023

• 32 major wins in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
• Around 137 million euros in stakes in MV
• 47 million euros for the common good

ROSTOCK, Germany (January 5, 2024) — Even in the challenging year of 2023, lottery players from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania did not let their joy of playing be taken away from them. Game participants wagered a total of over 137 million euros on the LOTTO Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania lotteries. This is the highest stake since the management company Lotto and Toto was founded in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 1991 and exceeds the strong result from 2022 (132 million).

Thirty-two big wins

32 game participants achieved big winnings. In 2022 there were 27. The biggest win of 355,037.40 euros in the Eurojackpot went to a lucky guy from Rostock at the beginning of August. In 2023, no million-dollar winnings went to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but more winners were able to enjoy major winnings of over 50,000 euros. Since the management company Lotto and Toto was founded in MV in 1991, MV has now counted a total of 57 lottery millionaires.

“Despite all the challenges that 2023 brought with it, the game participants continued to play the lottery enthusiastically,” said Dr. Ait Stapelfeld, Managing Director of LOTTO Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. “Lotto is a reliable constant for many – and perhaps now more than ever, it is linked to the desire to be able to fulfill one’s dreams.”

Online gaming continues to grow

The majority of bets in 2023, around 80 percent, will come from the approximately 490 LOTTO acceptance points. With growing enthusiasm, people from MV are also happy to give their tips online. Sales via lottomv.de and the LOTTO MV app increased by around 17 percent in 2023.

In 2023, game participants also preferred to bet on the classic LOTTO 6aus49 (46 percent). The European lottery Eurojackpot took second place among the most popular lotteries based on stakes placed, followed by the additional lottery Game 77.

Responsibility for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

The fact that LOTTO Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s range of games is safe was confirmed in October 2023 by certification according to the WLA (World Lottery Association) standard 2023.

But as a state government company, LOTTO MV not only bears responsibility for its customers and employees, but also for the common good in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A total of around 47 million euros were made available via LOTTO Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2023. The management company Lotto and Toto alone paid lottery taxes amounting to around 23 million euros to the country. Around another 20 million euros flow directly into the state budget as so-called special-purpose revenue. The state government departments can use this income to support a wide range of charitable, social, cultural or sporting projects.

In addition, the GlücksSpirale and Sieger-Chance lotteries generated additional special-purpose income of around 838,000 euros. In 2023, around 28 percent of these funds each went directly to the Federal Association of Independent Welfare and the German Foundation for Monument Protection, around 32 percent went to the Olympic Sports Confederation and around 12 percent went to the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church and Northern Church to preserve the village churches. Around 2.4 million euros were raised through the environmental lottery BINGO! collected and passed on to the North German Foundation for Environment and Development, which was able to support 115 projects in MV with BINGO! funds in 2023 alone.

The company also assumes responsibility for environmental and climate protection. Savings and modernization work within the company headquarters contribute to achieving the company’s sustainability goals.

Acceptance points in focus

“We are striving to achieve a similarly good result again in 2024,” says Dr. Ait Stapelfeld is confident about the new year. “But of course we cannot rule out that due to the economic situation in our country there may be less lottery play.” At LOTTO Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, supporting the acceptance points has top priority. A new, modern training center is currently being built directly at the company headquarters in Rostock’s Südstadt. “The acceptance points in the country are the most important sales partners for us. The majority are smaller shops with around two to three jobs that are currently being challenged by the lack of staff. It will be an enormous challenge in the future to qualify and permanently retain enough staff to sell LOTTO products.”
