Svenska Spel Has Made the Final Decision to Close Casino Cosmopol in Gothenburg and Malmö on February 24
VISBY, Sweden (February 16, 2024) — After the union negotiations have now ended, Svenska Spel has made the final decision to close Casino Cosmopol in Gothenburg and Malmö. The casinos will be open until February 24th, after which they will remain closed.
Casino Cosmopol has for several years struggled with profitability due to declining visitor numbers as more and more people choose to play casino online. Despite a series of measures aimed at increasing revenues and reducing costs, the losses have continued. Therefore, Svenska Spel is closing and dismantling the casinos in Gothenburg and Malmö. The closure affects around 100 employees in Gothenburg and 80 in Malmö.
“For over 20 years, Casino Cosmopol has offered the citizens of Gothenburg and Malmö an international casino experience, which is now unfortunately coming to an end. Until we close, my colleagues and I hope that our guests will want to visit us one last time so that together we can have a nice end for the casino,” says Ola Enquist, CEO of Casino Cosmopol.
Casino Cosmopol is a wholly owned subsidiary of AB Svenska Spel, which in 1999 was commissioned by the government to offer land-based casino gaming and establish international casinos in Sweden. The first casino was opened in Sundsvall in 2001 (discontinued in 2020). Later that year, the casino opened in Malmö, followed by Gothenburg in 2002 and Stockholm in 2003.
