YouTube Video with Gambling Advertisement Removed After Ksa’s Warning Action

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (August 27, 2024) — Two Dutch influencers have removed a YouTube video advertising an illegal gambling provider after a warning from the Netherlands Gambling Authority (Ksa). The video advertised an illegal gambling site, and the influencers indicated that they sometimes play on the website themselves. It is prohibited in the Netherlands to promote participation in illegal gambling.

Initially, the influencers removed the images shown from the website by blurring them. However, the accompanying audio, which spoke positively about the website, could still be heard. The Ksa then issued a second and final warning in which the makers were ordered to remove the video. The video in question can no longer be viewed. If a violation is found in the future, the Ksa can still impose a penalty or fine.

The Ksa has been sending warning letters for some time to websites of regional media, among others, that advertise illegal offers. This type of advertising is often also aimed at vulnerable target groups, for example players who are in the Cruks deregistration register. The Ksa often receives feedback that the media were not aware of the fact that the advertised website does not have a license for the Dutch market. The supervisory authority would like to point out once again that an advertiser is responsible for checking whether a gambling company that wants to advertise with them has a license. If an advertiser advertises illegal offers, they themselves run the risk of a sanction.
