PA Gaming Control Board Reports August Revenue

HARRISBURG, PA:   The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported today that the combined total revenue generated from all forms of gaming, along with fantasy contests, during August 2024 was $510,169,390, an increase of 11.60% compared to revenue generated in August 2023.

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the PGCB include slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests and video gaming terminals (VGTs). The PGCB has posted separate reports for these types of gaming on its website, https://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/.

Total tax revenue generated collectively through all forms of gaming and fantasy contests was $215,048,192* during August 2024.

Slot Machine Revenue

August’s revenue from the play of retail slot machines was $211,149,401, a 3.92% increase in revenue when compared to the $203,192,328 generated in August 2023.

The number of slot machines in operation in August 2024 was 24,595 compared to 25,206 at the casinos in August 2023.

Retail Table Games Revenue

Retail Table Games revenue for August 2024 was $80,959,807, a decrease of 2.08% from August 2023 when revenue was $82,676,497.

Total tax revenue from table games play during August 2024 was $13,438,020*.

Internet Casino-Type Gaming (iGaming) Revenue

Casino games offered online generated monthly gross revenue totaling $183,738,032 during August 2024 compared to $144,980,774 in August 2023, an increase of 26.73%.

Tax revenue generated from internet gaming play during August 2024 was $81,953,405*.

Sports Wagering Revenue

August 2024, total sports wagering handle was $485,289,137, or 23.48% above the August 2023 total of $393,007,298.

At the same time, the taxable revenue figure for August 2024 was $30,002,574, or 36.21% higher when compared to August 2023, when taxable revenue was $22,026,307.

Tax revenue generated from sports wagering during August 2024 was $10,800,927*.

Video Gaming Terminals

Total adjusted revenue for August 2024 for video gaming terminals (VGTs) was $3,672,053, or 5.37% higher than August 2023 when revenue was $3,484,985. By the end of August 2024, all VGT Operators offered the maximum permitted five machines at 74 qualified truck stop establishments, compared to five machines at 69 establishments at this time last year.

Tax revenue collected from the play of VGTs in August 2024 was $1,909,467*.

Fantasy Contests

Fantasy Contests revenue was $647,522 in August 2024, a decrease of 18.26% over August 2023, when revenue was $792,206.

Tax revenue collected from the play of Fantasy Contests in August 2024 was $97,128*.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of gambling involving 17 land-based casinos, online casino games, retail and online sports wagering, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) at qualified truck stops, along with the regulation of online fantasy sports contests.

The land-based casino industry in Pennsylvania consists of six racetrack (Category 1) casinos, five stand-alone (Category 2) casinos, two resort (Category 3) casinos and four mini-casinos (Category 4).  A significant job generator in the Commonwealth, casinos and the other types of Board-regulated gaming generated $2.54 billion in tax revenue in Fiscal Year 2023/24.
