Reporting on Match-Fixing in Sweden

Strängnäs, Sweden (February 1, 2023) — Since mid-February 2022, the Spelinspektionen has had an agreement with Sportradar AG for monitoring suspected match-fixing in Sweden.

During the period March-December 2022, the Spelinspektionen, via Sportradar, received reports that 11 competitions were very likely exposed to some form of match-fixing. All suspected incidents occurred in connection with football matches but not in any of the country’s highest leagues.

According to the Spelinspektionen’s regulation SIFS 2020:2, players with a Swedish license for betting must also send in the previous year’s suspected manipulations in sports performed in Sweden to the Spelinspektionen every year.

For the year 2021, a total of 53 suspicious events were reported during 24 different matches, 19 of these matches concerned football. Other sports where suspected match-fixing was reported were bandy, basketball, ice hockey, and tennis.

For the year 2020, licensed operators reported a total of 45 suspicious events during 27 matches.

The Swedish Gaming Authority is responsible for a match-fixing council where various authorities work together against the manipulation of sports events regarding match-fixing. Important cooperation partners in the council are the sports movement and the gaming industry.
