Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries CEO Leaving

MANITOBA, Canada (December 22, 2022) — A Manitoba Crown corporation — which just reported its highest net income in history — is losing its president and CEO.

Manny Atwal will leave Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries for the private sector after holding the job for three years.

“On behalf of the board of directors, I’d like to thank Manny for his leadership and drive for excellence over these last three years,” said board chairwoman Bonnie Mitchelson, in a news release late Wednesday.

Atwal appeared at a legislative committee Tuesday to discuss the corporation’s most recent annual report, for 2021-22.

Under Atwal’s leadership, the corporation reported a net income of almost $600 million, which represents a 40 percent increase from the previous fiscal year in which the pandemic raged.

Mitchelson said Atwal had a positive effect on the Crown corporation in the early days of his tenure because he made “swift and decisive action” by almost eliminating robberies at Liquor Marts.

Under his direction, security and I.D. checks became mandatory at new controlled entrances.

“We were fortunate to have Manny’s keen eye for innovative and collaborative solutions in generating revenue for the government to help support important programs like health care, education, and social services,” said Mitchelson.

Atwal joined MLL after being vice president of sales, marketing and strategy for StandardAero, an aerospace maintenance and repair firm.

Gerry Sul, executive vice president of gaming and entertainment will be acting president & CEO while the search for a successor is underway.
